United's two Easter fixtures next month have been selected for live coverage on Sky Sports Football
📺

The Blades' home match against Cardiff City and trip to Turf Moor will now both kick-off at 5:30pm

Football sold its soul years ago we really shouldn’t expect anything else

Football sold its soul in 1890 when it turned professional.
Sheffield FC took to moral high ground, having no interest in entering the new league declaring it would ruin football.

People blame Sky for having too much control but they have pumped so much money into the game.
Sky are the reason why English football has never been this popular in its entire history.
The worldwide TV audiences are off the scale and several clubs could easily average 70 to 80K.

5;30 on Good Friday is poor it means Leeds and Burnley will have both played before us.

Highly unlikely but it would be nice if we got promoted against Coventry or on that day, that would be some weekend.

Burnley are playing before us on several occasions now which I think hugely benefits them. We had this benefit under Wilders 1st promotion (e.g when leeds lost to Wigan and Brentford after we had played earlier in the day)

We play Coventry Friday before they play Saturday next weekend

However, if you play 2nd and other team loses, takes pressure off a bit, so conversely could work to your advantage

Leeds are a machine when in form, but have hit a blip
Burnley are now conceding

Long as we take care of our business we’re up

Can't really moan, it's down to Sky and other broadcasters that promotion to PL is worth so much.

It's not worth much at all when you consider the overheads. Doubling your wage bill, promotion bonuses circa 10-20 million, mandatory ground improvements if it's your first promotion . New contracts/ new signings on numbers that eat up your parachute money when relegated. We should also consider that it's the biggest Championship loss makers with the biggest chance of promotion. So it's a bit of a high stakes gamble with the promotion money paying back the large initial stake. Most lose their stake.

To stand a chance of retaining Prem revenues the bar is now Forest. A gargantuan private capital investment from your owner as the Sky money barely touches the sides these days .

What Sky has done, above all, is make footballers, football staff and agents incredibly wealthy. The benefits haven't passed on to the consumer. Tickets and merchandise and TV viewing is more expensive, not less.

That’s even annoying for me and I live 7,000 miles away!

Ah well, don’t suppose I was doing anything that day at 130 in the morning 😉

Not sure that's all true. Look at stadiums and training set ups even post Hillsborough reforms compared to now.

Stadiums have improved but it's not due to Sky Sports money, at least not directly. It's due to owner investment and the post Hillsborough disaster fall out mandating it. Liverpool FC have built two new stands, but they were owner funded. They are losing money (around 90m per last accounts) as it's all going to the footballers. Man United are purportedly building a new stadium a billion pounds + in debt. It isn't Sky money paying for it as that doesn't even cover their football commitments. Almost all the new stadia and stands are owner funded. The additional money that is then made goes straight in the football staff's sky rocket - alongside the TV money. This is the same with Champions League etc revenue. All the major developments in the McCabe era weren't due to Sky money iirc.

It's maybe feasible. You go up, you spend nothing (besides the bonuses and contracted wage rises) and you have, what, 50 million towards a new stand? I guess we did that to a lesser extent with the new academy land and buying back the Lane footprint.

Something that has become obvious is that owner losses (for anything) are now calculated in the potential future resale value of the club - this is the potential source of profit for an owner, accessible only when it's sold . FSG bought Liverpool for circa 300 million. They've built a new training ground and developed two stands. The club has debt they're carrying themselves or the club is servicing. The club valuation in that time has increased by up to 20 x despite the business not being particularly profitable. They've sold small stakes in Red Bird (the company that holds various sports clubs including LFC) for sums that make the 300 million initial purchase look a bargain. The Glazer's and other shareholders sold 28.8% of Man Utd for 1.3 billion plus 250 million in guaranteed investment in Man United, this despite the shit show there. SUFC sold for circa 100 million with no guarantee of post parachute payment Prem TV money. The value of football clubs has increased exponentially. This has happened in the Sky era and I'd suggest informed decisions to develop stadia despite the bottom line

I think we can definitely moan about that as Sheffield United fans, probably more than anything else in football.

It's made it much harder for us to break in to the top division, let alone win anything.

Without Sky's money, English football would be a far better place for everyone except "the top 6".

Right - lets take a look

Matchday 39 - We play Friday, Burnley and Leeds play Saturday
Matchday 40 - Burnley and Leeds play 12:30, we play at 3pm
Matchday 41- We play at the same time as Burnley, Leeds kick off 15 mins later at 8pm
Matchday 42- Burnley play Friday We play at the same time as Leeds
Matchday 43- Burnley play 15:00 We play at 17:30, Leeds play at 20:00
Matchday 44 - Leeds play @ 15:00 - we play Burnley @ 17:30
Matchday 45 - TBC (Leeds play Bristol C, we play at Stoke, Burnley play at QPR)
Matchday 46 - Everyone plays at the same time

So:
  • Burnley play before us 3 times, we play before Burnley 1 time
  • Leeds play before us 2 times, we play before Leeds 2 times (and kick off 15 mins before them once)

As others have said - it can work both ways. Playing first is an advantage if you win - if you don`t then the other team have a real opportunity.

Just had a quick look at the last 2 "close" promotion races we have been involved in, 2011-12 and 2018-19

In 2011-12 in the last 8 games we played after "them lot" a total of 5 times, and at the same time on 3 occasions. IMO the most egregious of these was the penultimate match of the season - with 2 games left I don't think teams should be playing at different times.
- our record in the game we played after "them" was P5 W4, D1, "their" record was P5 W5

In 2018-19 in the last 8 games, we played after Leeds just once, whereas they played after us on 4 occasions - and again one of those was with 2 games left.
- our record in the game we played after Leeds was P1 D1, Leeds record in the game they played before us was P1 W1
- our record in the games we played first was P4 W3, D1 and Leeds record in the games they played after us was P4 W1, D1, L2

Unless we end up playing after Burnley on Matchday 45 then this season won`t be as extreme as either of the above two - and I'm fully aware that the limited sample size here does seem to indicate that playing first (and having your promotion rivals star striker banged up with 3 games left) does seem to coffer an advantage...

One I can name in the Championship could get 90K+ for every home game apparently. :D
