I remember us winning at Bury,Toddy scored and climbed up fence.
Going to Norwich in cup lost 2-3 but what a game,6-0 hammering of Spurs,beating Man Ure,league double over the unclean,5-2 at Leicester,loads of great memories.

As others have said; those Blades born after the early to mid 70's had a rough ride (aside from 4th div champ season) for a long time. Bassett brought days/wins/top flight football I never thought I would see as a young lad growing up. First time I could really puff my chest out and be properly proud to be a Blade as we took on and deservedly beat many big clubs in that run.

Enjoyed parts of the Warnock run - the 02/03 season and then the promotion season and even bits of the relegation season (way too negative overall though especially away) but the era from 88-93 was my best time watching the Blades.

Is he being paraded on the pitch? - Hope so - both sets of fans would give him a great hand I am sure.

Instead we got Derek Dooley. A very nice man but there were many club figures more worthy of being immortalised.
Just goes to show what an out-of-touch, bloated clique the SUFC hierarchy are.

i find the 2 statues odd. Dooley was a great man and did a wonderful job at SUFC in some tricky times. Joe Shaw was a superb defender (best ever maybe) by all accounts and a great servant. Think likes of Foulke, Gillespie, Needham probably were too long ago but for me the two who need statues if any are Hagan and Currie.

Our greatest ever 2 players post War. Do not think many would argue. Seems bizarre they have been overlooked (know Hagan has a bust somewhere does he not?) but they have got that wrong for me.

Cried with him in the car park on the teams return to BDTBL.
Wrote him a letter (old school) when he left the Blades and got a reply.
Got a signed autobiography.
Thank you Harry for being responsible for my happiest times being a Blade.
I sincerely hope he goes on the pitch tomorrow. I'll be the one clapping loudest and filling up. Bless ya Harry

Loved Bassett, still do. One of the saddest days at the Lane for me was when the crowd turned on him at the Huddersfield game, football fans are such fickle, short memoried arseholes...
But on another note, I reckon, if pinned down on this one, owd Dave just might want AFC Womble to put one over us today!

I think I've mentioned before, that a load of old players who played for both clubs are taking a box and making a do of it.

It's been organised by Gannon, Tracey and Gage and a number of others are coming along too. I think thee is a possibility that some refreshing ale may be consumed.

Mrs Ken and I were wed in 91
I still have a card from Dave Bassett, signed by him and the team, wishing us the best on our wedding day. Brother Ken read it our during his best man speech - together with the letter that prompted it.

A colleague at work (Coventry fan) had written to Dave and mentioned that they were a company in Coventry and in the midst of them was a bloke that was mad on Sheffield United. Never stopped banging on about the Blades and used to go to all the games. Well I met Mrs Ken at that place of work and the letter went on to say that we were getting Wed. Not only that but Mrs Ken also had a season ticket for Bramall Lane with me.
So, Dave gets a wedding card sorted and gets all the squad to sign it and puts in his best wishes to me and Mrs Ken. Still got the letter and the card in our wedding album. Silver, anniv just at the end of last year so it for read again, and again

DB had a real passion for the Blades and the people behind them.
Reflected in the passion the players he brought in from further afield.
Gage, Gannon, Gayle, Agana, Bryson, Kelly, Tracey, Wood, etc. They all still love the Blades because he made it special to be there.

Also got married in 91, also had a card signed by him and the squad, also admire him as a man and manager.
He always had time for people, he knew how to motivate, to build and maintain a squad.
The one thing that made him a great, other than being a great man manager and one of the people, was that he knew that football is about the sum of the parts all pulling in the same direction.

Much respect Harry!

I for one look forward to showing my appreciation for giving me my "Blades" back for the first time since Sir John in 71.
