I like him, generally - especially in our system where he has a degree of cover. That said he can be a bit naiive defensively sometimes and for such a big lad he’s not the strongest, nor can he seemingly head the ball away from danger effectively which has put us in the shit on more than a few times.

I can kinda see where the OP is coming from if we’re intent on progressing but the timing of this post is odd to say the least given he had arguably his performance of the season Monday night.

I love him too, although even on Monday, he did some really simple things wrong, first half in particular. I can happily forgive him that for the 100% commitment and devotion to the cause. I doubt anybody's ever accused him of not trying.

Our new Monty????? I can think of a few things that differentiate him from Monty............

Being able to pass to a player on the same team is the first. I'll let others complete the considerable list of the rest...........:)

Especially at places like Brentford when the rest of the team couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo.

To be fair, if his shot at Brentford hadn’t taken a massive deflection I think the keeper would have been able to throw his cap on it.

I love Bash, and his work rate and commitment is second to none but his shooting is appalling.

I think this thread is a bit odd, given the way he's been playing of late and he's been on the score sheet.

I'm resurrecting this thread I made.

I know my football.

I'm not Basham's biggest fan, but that turn as he cut through half of Southampton's(?) team on a mazy run was a quality moment!

I still really like him and he's one of the first name on the team sheet for me.

That said, this did make me laugh...

of Basham, not Wilder.

He's definitely our new Monty. Want him in the trenches and in the derbies etc. but give him a simple ball out wide and he needs 3 touches to get it out from under his feet before he knocks it inside, surges forward toward the edge of the area before succumbing to a heavy nosebleed resulting in a woeful touch and concession of said ball to an opponent. This forces him to chase back and commit a careless foul somewhere near the final third where he voices his displeasure by doing star jump like demonstrations to the referee.

Good, loyal servant but we need that little bit of extra quality and composure for next season.

UTB

It's spot on, I don't disagree with it, but I wouldn't replace him.

One bad performance after a season of good ones and some want to hang him.

Could we do better? Maybe.

But we have much more pressing concerns at LWB, in centre midfield and upfront.

Agree entirely. We do need to replace Basham, but it's not exactly a priority at the moment. He's an adequate defender at the minute, nothing more, nothing less. Plenty of bottle, fittest player in the side however he is limited, particularly going forward.

He's got more skill in his eyelashes than monty had
For all the times bash miscontrols or loses possession he's more than capable of producing a piece of sublime skill

Monty never did that

Hold on, Monty once scored a beauty andI have a recollection of him beating a man AND THEN , completing a fifteen yard pass to one of our players (who was on the pitch not in the stand).

I was regularly dropping acid at that time in my life though.

Leonard should be pushing for the spot.

Amazing how often people remember that 1 mistake by Basham.

Certain others have poor games and it gets mentioned, and......

I dont agree he had a brilliant season, I got sick to death of seeing him ballsing it up in the final third with his complete inability to put in a good cross, weight a through ball or god forbid test the keeper.

His only goal outside the box was the volley against brentford that took a huge deflection off the defender.

This is not nit picking when we play with such an attack set up and he has such freedom to get forward and play off people, he holds us back and when you add to this that he’s not strong, gets dominated in the air and certainly isnt John Terry when it comes to reading the game I’d say he’s absolutely holding us back.

Hope to see Ryan Leonard given a go at RCB tbh

Id also point out that our spell in the top two last season coincided with having CCV rather than Basham at RCB. Its better to have someone who just puts his foot through the ball than someone who can kind of contribute to some build up play but then his lack of end product and qualty in the final third means we rarely get anything out of it and end up exposed.

Only time the team really struggled with CCV was when we were giving him the ball every ten seconds against millwall and putting him under pressure to play.

Id want an improvement on both CCV and Bash but my point is that, for now, we’d be better off with someone who just puts their foot through the ball than someone who just flatters to decieve on the ball and costs us in the final third.

Bash played out of his skin last season compared to how we all expected him to play. There were a few games when he put in heroic all-action performances.

The overlapping centre back role is one most players in the world will struggle with. It was great when we played in a league where our players, and team, were head and shoulders above everyone else.

In a league where our players aren't, we struggle to do it well. It worked when no one expected it. Now, it's fairly easy to negate and exploit at the other end.

To expect Bash to be brilliant at both ends is unrealistic. He's not got the pace for it for one. He came to us as a versatile championship squad member, and in truth that's all he is. We need better, but we probably need a different formation in truth.

Disagree on the last point. We need better players to make our formation more effective. We haven't got a single winger at the club, so all this nonsense I hear about 442, 4141 and other stuff is barmy.

Coutts is a better player than Evans will ever be, so we need him back ASAP.
We need an improvement on Basham, Stevens and arguably all of our forwards.
We also need someone as a long term replacement for Duffy, and I think we ought to push the boat out for Luke Freeman.

However, I get that we haven't got the cash for all of that.

Monty scored a couple of good uns.

Early in his career he passed a beauty into the net at the Lane end (v Brum?) and we thought “player here”. The latter at L***s (in the 4-0?) and we thought “who scored that?” and “where did that come from?”.
