Singing section

I go to quite a few MLS games, and despite the low quality of the football, and the fact that 75% of the crowd is made up of nice white families from the suburbs with young kids, they still create a better atmosphere than some clubs in England do these days.

I used to go and see the New York Red Bulls, and that was a fantastic atmosphere with only about 15k in the ground. Yes, they had a twat stood on a podium with a megaphone directing the singing, and another twat with a drum, but there were 400-odd hardcore fans that didn't shut up at all during the game. You could also drink beer in view of the pich, and flares / smoke bombs were officially permitted (and presumably let off by people who knew what they were doing). Cheaper than the Lane too.

Jim Phipps out?

Simple solution: breathalyse people. If you're not pissed enough you don't get on the Kop :D

I thought I'd stopped complaining about that problem for good as I'd done it to death.

Then I saw that disgrace on Wednesday night. They should genuinely not open the gates until FT.

We were on the attack as a group of six made their way to an exit just behind me in the South Stand. “You’ll miss the end” I yelled loudly. Looked at me gone art they did.

Sort of related... everyone knocks Man Utd fans, but they seem to always come up with the most original chants. They were non-stop for 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge tonight. Class away support.

Spot on, set the standard, we’re capable of same, not heard it for a long time....could start Saturday...in stand not just on concourse.

But at home ? We are very good away generally as well. The issue is more about making BDTBL a hostile atmosphere and to be fair I doubt it’ll happen this season despite Wilder’s call to arms last week. We pay to be entertained and that’s it, we aren’t part of the entertainment. Shame really.

Derby on Boxing Day - a unique experience of a quality Bramall Lane atmosphere. Fingers crossed it occurs again.

Superb atmosphere created by Man Utd tonight. I doubt Stamford Bridge has witnessed an away atmosphere like that in years.

No one sat down. The answer isn't a singing section it's a standing section.

Won't happen. The authorities all over (not just football) want to control us.

Highlights how intelligent our fans are that we make such a difference v Derby (and Blackburn) but never think to make the same effort again.

We've won a few in a row now but the time will come this season when the fans are badly needed. Let's hope they wake up and don't get paralysed by those "nerves".

Yep we're all thick

You know I’ve supported you in the hard work you did on a singing section and that you were let down by Pork Pie promises but this “ intelligence” issue you have is getting a bit pathetic. Like me, you’re nowhere near one of the most intelligent posters on here despite your match comments which I almost always agree with. Give it a rest.

I remember your meltdown on here before a game had finished and when it turned around for us, you looked stupid. Like most of us have done at times.

Awareness then if you like, if not intelligence. I feel if they had more of that on the Kop they'd realise the effect they can have and make more of an effort. I hope they do when it's needed most but I won't be holding my breath.

Meltdown's a much overused word on here...

I don’t know if its awareness either but l won’t argue the point.

If fans are going to be led like sheep into singing then it’s jo surprise there’s a lack of atmosphere.

Take Gary fucking Sinclair and his apparent insistence on starting off the GCB with the original opening notes of Annie’s Song Which are dirge like and not like the song used to be sung. It’s starts off far slower and never has any passion like when it's sung without assistance - for THE example see after full time at the Charlton cup game.
It hasn’t even dawned on him to just up the recording by 3 RPM which would make a difference.

Meltdown, dummy out, paddy. It’s the same thing. A tad embarrassing.

Just wait till all the tourists arrive, when we’re in the Prem. It’ll be half n half scarf central.

Half our student population will be in attendance every week. Can't wait.

I hate it when we sing at all, it puts me off the game. I like to watch the match quietly so I can focus on what's going on. Also, if any of our players make a mistake I can hiss and shout at them and they have a reasonable chance of hearing it.

The 90 minute singing thing can be achieved with those chants that can last for a full 20 minutes or so.

I remember away at Everton in the Premiership and West Brom one year when we were both going for promotion on a Tuesday night, the repeat of “Sheff Utd, Sheffield United....” for a full half kept the atmosphere really lively. It’s a bit of a dull chant but it created noise. It only broke occasionally when someone would kick start another chant.

Surely this forum could be used to come up with some better, more original chants. Starting with improving the “he’s taking us to the very top” line within the “he’s one of our own” chant.

Chants/songs don’t start on forums. In fact it’s embarrassing even talking about it.

I have a solution...

Safe standing area behind a goal, that’s where the singing sections should be..

It would be sold out completely, full of people who all want the same thing, to stand with their mates and sing their heads off..

Disagree on that. Pretty sure other fans’ do it and if it achieves the end goal who cares? I’ve seen a few idea bandied about on here before, seems the ideal setup for an exchange of ideas. If you’re worried people won’t think you’re cool for giving it a go, then remember it’s a football forum - we’re all fairly anonymous on here...

Anyway, back to the Man Utd support against Chelsea, I was wondering what the chant was that they were singing non-stop the other night and it turns out it was this...

“Ole’s at the wheel,
Tell me how good does it feel?
We’ve got Sanchez, Paul Pogba and Fred,
Marcus Rashford’s a Manc born and bred
Dooo dooo dooooo
We’re the greatest in English football......
We’ve won it all”

Great chant. Be nice if we could start coming up with stuff like this. We’re going through our best period as a club in my lifetime. These times rarely last when you’re a Blade.
