I'm probably falling for the PR stuff again, but I was interested to see that Carruthers (goes well with Horatio, that name) singled out hearing the Greasy Chip Butty as part of the experience at The Lane that made him want to come here. As one who has never played in front of a crowd reaching double figures, I would like to believe that such things influence career choices (why would you choose to stay at MK Dons instead?), and if the crowd does influence both home and away teams, it is a good reason to try to get The Lane back to full volume again. On other threads recently, discussions have been about why do we support our team, and turn up to watch them. One factor is the belief that we can influence what goes on in the game - it may be an illusion, but it keeps us going, and it is one reason why I would rather be at The Lane on a miserable winter's evening, than watching football on TV. And a letter I read the other day made another good point. There has been a lot made recently about the benefits of being in a choir (Gareth Malone, etc.); but people have neglected to mention one of the most popular choirs of the lot - the football crowd. Singing (very badly) with thousands of like-minded people is a great experience. So, next home game...

I'm in complete agreement, hearing and being part of a roaring crowd is one of the best parts of watching footy. There's no doubt it helps your team out when the fans are behind them, it can work the other way too as we've seen over the last few seasons when things have sometimes got bitter, the players heads go down and they're scared of making a mistake.

Unfortunately I think in this division things just don't mean so much, whilst trying to not be too arrogant about it, when you're playing Fleetwood who have only brought 100 fans and so you don't get the two sets of fans trying to outsing each other. Often other teams are playing at their level and don't expect anything and we expect that we should be beating teams, it just doesn't get you going as much as having a packed crowd full of hope.

Atmosphere bit flat at BDTBL though this season...
Saw a thread on porktalk yesterday (yes my screen started to melt and my virus checker went into overload) with someone havin a right moan about how the atmos at the sty is poor and no one sings their songs anymore.....
Maybe too busy shinning all their phones at each other. Saw no mention of EEL rumours.

Too much worry that it will all go wrong. Last time I really joined in was against Swindon in the play off home leg. Adkins tenure was just...........bewildering. I was as flat as a flag on a very flat flatfish all season.

The atmosphere will not change instantly
After all this is Division Three football and although top of the league we are mostly labouring our way to victories.
Considering the confidence levels that must be within the players at the moment no team is being blown away, every team is having its moments against us and causing us problems.
This can cause a lot of tension and worry in the support

i think it has been a bit flat this season but when we hit february and march with 4 or 5 big games coming up so will the noise levels and to be honest it needs to weve got to play our part in our run to the finishing line so come on sing loud and proud and lets get back to where we belong

There won't be mate, just a twat doing what twats do, praticing his twattish twatness as best a twat can do.

We are Sheffield united, nobody has an into song like we do....nobody has such passionate fans when we are on form, just ask the Spurs manager about the passion at Bramall Lane when they came in the cup a couple of seasons ago...I agree sing loud!:)

Carruthers loved the Gallon of Magnet line.
Conjured up thoughts of a reight proper fuckin piss that did.

Our fans can be amazing
But it's that amazingness that South Yorks Police, the local authorities and health and safety people have been absolutely determined to stamp out.

The fans have created this problem with flare throwing and pitch invasions.

It's a problem because we have a fan base that is so desperate for a bit of success that just by winning a cup tie against a higher placed club is enough to send half of them bonkers

God knows what would happen with real proper success

some good points here. The engagement in the game, take Monday for example, where we went one down and then slowly fought our way back and then won easily in the end was a very positive experience. I think that ability to lose yourself in it all is really good for you. Even better if you have the Wilder experience than the Adkins variety

Charlton at home Fa cup quarter final three years ago.
Absolutely stunning atmos.
Never witnessed owt like it after brayford slotted home.
loved it. but also would like to mention

Forest in same cup run .... "if porter scores....
Spurs- potichino "best atmosphere ever" or something like that
Southampton - where the much maligned Sparky led the line and scored the winner
Forest play off semi - fucking amazing

The thing I've noticed is in recent years when we've had to watch and endure some really bad performances from the Blades. The atmosphere has definitely dwindled. This season (apart from the first four games) because each game at HOME has almost been a only one team can win this kind of game. The atmosphere has had a when are we Guna score and win type feel. It's one extreme to another. We as fans really do need to play our part it's so important IMO.

Compared to the season before? Or Clough's second? Or Blackwell's?

I'll leave it there Rod. What I'm saying is that everything is relative. I think we need to get back into the habit of making the Lane intimidating, and that'll only come when all of us believe 100% In the team and our lads scare the shit out of the opposition.

We're getting there pal.

The 3-1 game against them
My brother in law is a pig and he said the atmosphere at the Lane was scary
