Simon Walton

Yup, the lad must be gutted. Was looking forward to seeing (more than the short time at Mansfield) what he could do and potentially having the added height in midfield.

I think it was Yeates's pass that did him. As soon as the pass was made to Walton I shouted suicide ball. It was well short! :(

Gutted for the lad! Just gone through the same (twice) and its a killer

Good look Simon, Lets hope he makes a full recovery

It's an interesting question actually. Will we be funding his wages for the season still?

Just been reminded of how delightful BladesMad can be; several posters loudly celebrating that Walton has had a career threatening injury as it means he won't be playing for us. Nice.

Lovely aint it. I'm not disappointed that he won't be playing for us this season, but considering how happy he seemed to be to get the chance (at monetary loss), I can't celebrate his injury in the slightest.

Suppose it depends on the Contract, I would imagine that he becomes Plymouths liability now he has been sent back.

But to be honest, if the lad was ours and was injured playing us, we should stand by him in some form or other :)

If he needs sumat to do on a Saturday we will be needing an extra ball boy in Row Z

Plymouth will be absolutely gutted but it's a great relief for us.
Now, let's go out there and acquire some proper footballers.

I wonder how much he cost us?

He will have cost us presumably at least a month in wages, maybe some expenses on top.
It was always a really stupid signing and we can only assume/hope that we didn't sign something that's left us paying til January.

Ok... I'll bite. Which 'proper' footballers are available and within our budget and wage structure. Which would make you happy?

Are you really seriously actually genuinely suggesting that Simon Walton, a bloke who spent last season on loan at Crewe and struggled there, is where we're at?
Plymouth fans were absolutely delighted to get rid of him. That's a team that got relegated last season.
If you think that's the limit of our ambition, we may as well pack up now and accept relegation.

I wouln't say that was the limit of ambition at all, but it does illustrate our position at the moment. We're not in a position to pay transfer fees or match high wages so we are looking at other teams reserves, transfer listed or released players and players from lower leagues such as Walton. We can't poach top players from other clubs or steal promising young players from lower leagues at the moment so we're looking at players such as Dickinson and Nosworthy who are sadly listed as no-marks or sub-standard.

The question stands though and is open to all - which players would you like United to sign to appease the fans given our financial situation?

Question might stand but it's not a sensible one really.

None of us know what the real financial position is, none of us know what Hoofy has as a budget, none of us know the demands of the various players out there and none of us know if they would consider playing for us.

I don't spend all my waking hours working out who I would like to see playing for us but I do know I want two first team quality players for each position (not players bought specifically as "back ups") and a couple who can fit in in a number of positions. If that is too much to ask then we are in as poor a financial situation as the pigs in my view.

Jostein,
I don't want signings to appease the fans, I want signings that reflect a sense of direction, a sense of planning and that show we do have scouts working for us.
Walton was signed on the basis Blackwell knew him six years ago. I fully agree we should be looking at good young players lower down but Walton was not one of them.
Ward was but that's been about it.

I like how people point at the "non-existing" scouting network but then fail to even put one or two names on the table of players we could look at - and admit that we know nothing of the wage structure or available finances.

If the scouts are given a brief from the top and asked to deliver 30 reports on players to fill any single role, I fail to see what more they can do.

I would say there is one difference. Someone is paid to do the scouting (match tickets, expenses, wage?) and we aren't. How are we supposed to come up with names, work for a living and spend all day on here? Not enough hours in the day.

Are we paid to go and watch football matches for SUFC?
Jeez.

I was focusing more on how you can point the finger squarely at the scouts, rather than actually asking you to be a scout.

Looking at Blackwell's comment, it looks as if SUFC may well be paying Simon Walton's wages for the loan period.
Jeez. What a complete and utter comedy club.

Same reason I replied to Jostein earlier on the page.

I find the idea that WE are supposed to throw players names into the ring as faintly ridiculous when we employ people to do exactly that at the club.
So do you believe that the people "we employ to do exactly that at the club" (the scouts) are failing to do their job? I'm sorry if I'm wrong in the assumption that you object to Jostein's post because you think our scouts are failing, but why else would you bring it up?

OK. In the response to Jostein I made no mention of, or implication at, the performance of our scouting network. He asked an "open" question regarding putting names forward and I responded that I didn't think anyone on here was in full possesion of the facts and had other, indeed better, things to do with their time.

I responded to YOUR post because it said "people" (as in more than one) and so I didn't realise you were only expecting or aiming your post at Len. Once again it made no mention of the relative performance of our scouting network but did re-inforce the earlier point that WE are not best placed to be naming who we should, or should not be, looking at as transfer targets.

I state for eveyones benefit, not that anyone else will give a toss, that any implication against the performance of our scouting network is entirely in the head of the reader.

He was injured while playing for SUFC, surely we have responsiblities, Birch will have to find a bit more ..........

That was the way I read it.
One loan place and six months wages on an injured player who struggled to get in Crewe's first team.
The lord moving in mysterious ways.

I can't imagine we will pay his full 6 months worth of fees, but I agree with Worksop, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that we will have an obligation to pay something as he was injured whilst playing for us
