I don't think Rush did anything wrong. He got to the ball first (and scored) and, if anything, tried to pull out as Tracey slid into him.[/Didn't look that way from the Bramall Lane upper at the time, but it's nearly 30 years ago.

I disagree about commanding the area. Tracey's reading of the game and communication were as good as any keeper I've seen. He was more assured at dealing with crosses too. Both were very, very brave. Neither were that good at distribution (although, in fairness to Kelly, he had to learn to take goalkicks with left foot after he injured his right thigh)!

At one point we had Tracey (England B), Kelly (Ireland), Rees (Wales squad call up) and Leighton (Scotland) on our books at the same time. Not a bad GK roster!

Totally agree with this. Kelly was a great shot-stopper but was actually pretty poor at commanding his area and often stayed rooted to his line. I'd say Tracey's main strength was his ability to come out and collect crosses. Tracey may have made the odd howler but he was so brave and threw himself at everything. They were both great keepers but Tracey comes out on top for me.

Agree 100%, for a young goalkeeper to come in and replace Benstead so near the end of the season was a wonderful decision from DB, crucial to us going up. The next season he won/saved us countless points and when he made his comeback at WHL v Spurs the next season I knew we'd stay up. Losing 4-0 was a good omen!

I remember Barnes taking a corner in front of the kop and being greeted by a chorus of 'Where were you in Italy' as it was his first league appearance since his no-show in Italia '90. By comparison, Gascoigne received a warm welcome at WHL and the Lane that season, by 'warm' yes there was mickey taking, mars bars thrown, but you sensed it was tongue in cheek, as most Blades appreciated his talent AND effort, whereas Barnes rarely combined the two for his country.
