Correction
Kelly P 29 W 5 D 12 L 12

Useful breakdown. I've tried to do a like-for-like comparison of their respective records by league level (ignoring Tracey's first season) and this is what I've got.

Top tier
Tracey P83 W29 D18 L36 (1.26 points per game)
Kelly P61 W16 D20 L25 (1.12 points per game)

2nd tier
Tracey P242 W96 D70 L76 (1.48 points per game)
Kelly P154 W55 D54 L45 PPS (1.42 points per game)

I was surprised by those results to be honest. Obviously they don't tell the full picture (I'd be interested to know their relative rates for goals conceded for example), but I hadn't expected to see Kelly be lower on the 2nd tier comparison, as I associated him with featuring more in the Kendall/Spackman seasons. Quite possibly I've done those figures wrong...

2 very good keepers , both deserve praise for the time between the sticks with us .
Having seen both keepers in action ,
Alan Kelly in goal for the Republic of Ireland as well .
For me it's Ned , only just mind .
However I can't help but think of Tracey's game in the Manx Derby , but leave it at that ehh .
I'd forgotten that lol

both top keepers, i would go for Kelly, just... On the basis he was calmer and less prone to moments like this.
i was at this game and remember pissin mi sen laughing !
definitely not a Guardiola sweeper keeper our Trace.....

Though Kelly had the best performance against Wednesday out of the two by a country mile, albeit ultimately counting for nothing.

a snort beast i worked with said Kellys performance that day stopped it been a rugby score, couldn't argue with him. To be fair i said if they didn't have fatty pressman in't net we would have smashed them more than we did. The fat bastard always looked a world beater against us, took plenty of stick but took it well to his credit. Think there was a begrudging respect across both sides at that time, although ours were better and he was a pie eating cock munching cum stain....

Poor Tracey! Why didn't he just put his foot through it and run back towards goal?!

Is it Vinny Samways tracking him down?

That first half in the 02/03 3-1 win in particular saw Pressman make a number of excellent saves, at least two denying Windass. Think he played a big part in that game at Hillsborough that they somehow won earlier that season.

Both were top top keepers for us, but I think Kelly was the better of two , better all round game and commanded area better than Tracy.

I disagree about commanding the area. Tracey's reading of the game and communication were as good as any keeper I've seen. He was more assured at dealing with crosses too. Both were very, very brave. Neither were that good at distribution (although, in fairness to Kelly, he had to learn to take goalkicks with left foot after he injured his right thigh)!

At one point we had Tracey (England B), Kelly (Ireland), Rees (Wales squad call up) and Leighton (Scotland) on our books at the same time. Not a bad GK roster!

Although I suspect Tracey was never on the losing side in a league derby (won um both in 91-92, won and drew in 00-01, drew um both in 01-02, not sure who was in goal in the defeat in 93-94?)

Isn't this the game we tried booking for, only for me to be told I had to have a travel membership?
We spent the afternoon trying to find a photo booth so I could get the necessary photos in time ,eventually getting em done at Midland Station.
It was for the QPR match (the away match before Spurs). Remember a car full of Scallywags making an illegal turning just outside the Midland station nearly crashing into your car when you were driving back to the Lane?

Doing the goals conceded would be too much for me to do. Attack wise we did better with Tracey because of his accurate kicks towards Deane especially in the 1989-90 season. I was surprised that only one manager in the division who noticed Tracey's distribution brought us goals and making the opposition defence line go further back, that was Howard Wilkinson at L**ds. He would instruct Bobby Davison to get as close as possible to Tracey every time he had the ball in his hands preventing him from rolling the ball out of the box. This clearly unsettled Tracey. Tracey had a great understanding with the defence and it really showed when we had a good start in the 1997-98 season (we lost only one league match until the beginning of December and he played in all of these matches). Nicky Marker always found space to receive a rolling pass from the keeper as Spackman wanted us to pass from the back as often as possible. Kelly's distribution wasnt as good and I always felt that the opposition defence line were able to push higher up.

Being a good keeper isnt just about shot stopping.

I do indeed,we caught up with them at the lights, and they switched lanes and turned off up towards the Moor.

I remember Shutt doing the same at Bramall Lane.

It was Kelly who pulled some good saves off despite the defeat

I'd say it's not really representative of who was the better 'keeper with Trace being there for the back to back promotions and Kelly only arriving after we'd reached the top flight. Both great for us but for me, Kelly will always be top dog.

And the season before atvthe Sty in the nil nil and the season before that in the league cup

I'd go for Kelly just, Trace was a fine keeper.

We've had some quality keepers in my time watching the Blades, but the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen for United was by Mel Rees. Only 9 games I know, but I've never seen a better run of keeping performances like we saw at the back end of 93.
