Simon Tracey v Alan Kelly stats

When Alan Kelly left the Blades in summer 1999 I always knew we won more games with Tracey in the team than with Kelly. I have done the stats for up to the end of the 1998-99 season because I dont know where I have put the latest edition of the SUFC complete records (published in 2013, I think) so I had to use the Complete Records book that was published in 1999. I will be grateful if someone can provide Simon Tracey's stats for the seasons between 1999-2000 and 2001-02 seasons (dont think Tracey played a game in the 2002-03 season?).

I dont think Tracey's stats for between 1999 and 2002 will make much difference to my argument as our league record for 1999-2000 was 13-15-18, 2000-01 was 19-11-16 and 2001-02 was 15-15-16

I don't think Tracey played a single league game in 02/03. In fact had he retired by then? Think that might have been a key reason for the need for Kenny's signing.

Wasn't that because the club was just fairly poor about getting that organised quickly? The only other keeper I can recall playing that season was Alan Kelly's brother, Gary. Don't tell me yet another one of the Kelly family denied poor Simon game time!

Tracey injured his back in Spring 1992, it was what originally let Mel Rees in goal, and prompted the signing of Alan Kelly in the summer of 92 as Bassett was not convinced that Tracey had got over the injury and indeed Tracey was forced out of the team for an operation soon into what was the first ever Premier League season.

Tracey came back from that injury but was never quite the same keeper again.

Kelly remains the best keeper in my time as a Blades fan.

Fractured cheekbone after collision with Ian Rush after 13 minutes. John Pemberton went in goal.

For me, Kelly was the best of the 2, I remember being gutted that he was to miss the '97 play off final. Can anyone remember the game against WBA at home when he tried to take 2 of their players on, only for Sneakers to take the ball off him and place in to an empty net?

Maybe the stats are scewed somewhat as Tracey was part of two promotion winning campaigns, which also included two good cup runs. Kelly played in two seasons when we were fighting relegation.

Also, as much as I loved Tracey, you could say he was at fault for Steins and Hopkins goals - two massive games for us that had big consequences.

The 4-2 home defeat against WBA in Aptil 1998. He got injured in the 1st half but carried on. In the dressing room at half time he told our players not to pass the ball back to him. But in the 2nd half Chris Wilder forgot the instruction and passed the ball back to Kelly who then tried to take to take to of the WBA players on but it was Lee Hughes (not Richard Sneekes) who took the ball of him and scored.

Kelly missing the play off final in 1997 was due to the injury he received in the play off 2nd leg at Ipswich

Yes, he injured his shoulder after diving to Dennis Wise's feet in the 2-1 win at Chelsea in March 1992 but carried on playing till the end of the match. Graham Taylor selected him in the England squad but Tracey had to pull out of the squad as he was ruled out for the rest of the season. We signed Mel Rees

Having seen both keepers in action ,
Alan Kelly in goal for the Republic of Ireland as well .
For me it's Ned , only just mind .
However I can't help but think of Tracey's game in the Manx Derby , but leave it at that ehh .

Only saw Hodgy's last couple of games as a 5 year old so need to defer to my elders there, but respect their views that he's the finest.

In my time the best keeper I've seen play for us is Alan Kelly, by a distance.

Both were top top keepers for us, but I think Kelly was the better of two , better all round game and commanded area better than Tracy .

At the other end of the scale we've had to suffer the delights of Nicky Johns , Derek Richardson , Graham Benstead and Andy Leaning ... I've left our George out on compassionate grounds ..

Tracey has never lost a league match against Wendy.

We were fighting against relegation in all the four seasons we were in the top division and even Tracey had a better record there than Kelly

For me Tracey was better - main goalkeeper in the 90 promotion season, England call up but missed out due to injury (was it against Russia??), always seemed to be the goaly when we went on long unbeaten runs. Can clearly remember that save from Ray Houghton at Anfield when he seemed to turn mid-air to push his effort wide. Kelly was good but Trace the better number one for me.

I think Tracey was used as a bit of a scapegoat for that Manchester derby game. I don't think he was really at fault for any of the goals, he was unlucky with a few, and he actually made a couple of decent saves.
