Silly Jose Baxter

So we have Doyle whos legs are going, Baxter who never runs anyway apparently, that leaves us with one midfielder to do the running for 3 players, what must Clough be thinking picking these players eh:rolleyes: everybody run run run:rolleyes:

There's been people waiting for Baxter to do that so they can come on here and rant about shite. We have had other players this season, who have on the whole, contributed far less than Baxter whether you think he's overweight or not, which is also a load of shite. Someone actually came on here and wished he got injured so he wouldn't be played, we do have a strange fanbase at times.

Reminds me of frank lampard for his physique

Agree. And by all accounts Lampard was one of the hardest, most dedicated trainers in the game to get over it. I remember Redknapp saying he used to train morning and afternoon and even came back in at night sometimes.

I don't know, but I doubt Jose shares Frank's work ethic as well as his physique.

Probably not. He doesn't need to for 20mins

If Baxter could consistently last 90 minutes, consistently close opponents down, consistently track players back, then nobody would give a flying feck about his physique.

But if you're a midfielder and can't perform these basics, then you need to be a very special talent. Baxter is very gifted but not that gifted.

I look at the ground which Brayford, Basham, Done and Doyle covered today, and frankly it should make Baxter feel ashamed for more than one reason.

At least he has provided a splendid opportunity for all the ones who have been itching to stick the knife into a player in the red and white, but hey, par for the course. Bad mistake, cost us points - I agree. Some of the other rubbish - nah. Sorry and all that. I don't remember this kind of witch hunt for Basham's sending off.

Think he has so much talent but is not now and never will be an athlete - which is a general pre-requisite in football today.
It is rare I am distraught at a game, but it was head in hands time for an absolutely stupid challenge by Baxter.
When will these players learn, you cannot tackle like that any more - stupid, thick, pathetic.
Cost us 2 points, thank goodness I don't have to watch him for at least 3 games. Get someone like Reed in permanently instead of us waiting forever for Baxter, this so called enigma, to deliver in a CONSISTENT manner - the team can't afford it. The ball spread to JCR a few minutes before was class - jeez....we just needs lots more Jose in a game. Stop thinking you're a good footballer - just BECOME one.
Becoming a waste of a position in our midfield.
Rant over - off to bed.

Conversely it amazes me how a professional footballer who clearly is overweight and not fit enough can get into the side. Baxter can play I don't think there is any doubt about that but ... I don't think he is so good that he should by pass the absolute basic need to be properly fit.

So your a sports scientist mate?

No I am not a sports scientist mate ..,, I am just a fan like everyone on here. As a fan I give as much support as I possibly can home and away .. But I don't let that fact get in the way of reality .. So what I am saying is my red and white glasses don't cover up everything ... Was Baxter a silly boy yesterday ( the question of the original thread) ... yes he was . I can forgive that, we have all played the game and all had a rush of blood at some stage, made a mistake etc. However as I and many others on this thread say I can't forgive the lack of effort and application to get fit even though my view is he is a good player when he wants to be .... And to take that view / be of that opinion I don't need to be a sports scientist .

basham gives every ounce of energy he has.. that is why.. players have kind of 'fan goodwill accounts' with the fans. when they are playing well they go into credit. when they play crap or do something daft they lose credit.. basham is still in credit even though he got sent off. baxter was in debit before he got sent off soo.. here comes the flak
he's undoubtedly talented but something is not right

he's undoubtedly talented but something is not right

That quote sums up Baxter, but what it gives the TEAM is a problem - a problem that as a fan I am fed up with seeing.

All I ask for is consistency out of players, and Baxter is probably the least consistent player we have.

Here's some flak also - we are a better side without Scoogal this season, and we would be better with Baxter.

Michael Doyle used his big mistake against Fulham as a low point and springboard to better things.

Let's hope Jose Baxter does the same. Big talent that needs encouragement and bringing out.

Baxter needs United more than United need him, but we do need a playmaker in the final third. He could end up wasting his undoubted potential.

I would agree that something has not been right with Baxter since he was injured early on in the season but he did score important goals prior to that - Peterborough, Crawley, Preston - take his goals away and our points haul from those games would have been 2 instead of 7. Since then he has struggled for form/confidence though I thought he was particularly good against Spurs in the second leg after Doyle was taken off. Similarly Scougall has not looked the same player since the pre-season injury (I know he has his fans but for me he has been as big a disappointment as Baxter has since October, though in truth the whole team went through the doldrums around that time except for cup matches). To be honest some bench time for both would probably have been beneficial, but I find it hard to see much in the way of creativity in the middle of the park without Baxter.

Done has had a flying start and long may it continue, but in reality we are relying heavily on Jamie Murphy offensively (10 goals, 8 assists in all matches) . If he gets crocked I fear we could be in trouble. Midfield just isn't creating much despite the proliferation of midfielders we have - Baxter 8 goals,3 assists, Reed 0 goals,3 assists, Doyle 1 goal,1 assist, Scougall 1 goal,0 assists, Wallace J 0 goals,0 assists, Coutts 0 goals,1 assist, Wallace K 0 goals,0 assists. Davies has also been out for a good long while but he does possess a decent free kick. We are also giving away a lot of free kicks (Doyle tops the rankings by a country mile with 50 - part of his job ? maybe) but these can prove especially dangerous given our defensive weakness at set pieces.

I agree that consistency is important, but so is ability - ie one could be consistently mundane, unimaginative and uncreative which is not good for our team. Baxter can be very good, can score and can pass creatively, something which we do seem to lack - Louis Reed may well be the answer for the future but he had a mare against Notts County and its a lot to put on young shoulders. As a fan I like to see us a) win and b) play decent stuff. Hopefully the three match ban will galvanise something and Baxter will come back from the ban suitably chastened and better for it. I think the clock is ticking for him, but as for playing when not fit - that would be an indictment of the Manager and backroom boys as well as Baxter.

I am undecided re Baxter but you are right re Scougall. Once again we've had an upturn in form when he's out of the side. This is not a co-incidence.

Can we stop this 'Fulham was Doyle's turning point' nonsense. He was good before then for a long time.

Also how can people believe he's overweight? Madness.

I don't know if he's overweight or not, but he's not fit enough.

As someone said on here, he's a professional footballer and it's February. If you can't run for 90 minutes, it's not good enough.

That's the reason he plays in this division in my opinion.

Baxter undoubtedly has talent, probably the most naturally gifted player in the team, and he can pick out a killer pass, but so can Terry Kennedy, as he proved on Saturday. Let's see how we fare for the next three games, and then see if Baxter gets back into the starting line up.
