Although the contribution these two players have made to our relegation battle this season has been great, shouldn't we start looking for permanent replacements now we are safe ?
I know quite a few are talking about trying to sign them but transfer fee aside I believe the club would have to alter their whole wage structure to do it.
The sort of wages they would expect would be extortionate compared to the wages the rest of the team are getting and there's nothing like money squabbles for undermining team spirit....

Yes - not just on ability but it seems like they are "the right stuff" as far as Cloughie is concerned in the dressing room. If we could convince them and their clubs to do a deal I would be delighted.

Of course your right about their worth, but they could also be a step too far far to early in our development...

I'd be trying to sign them. If either cost under a million that would represent decent value.
We know they can play, we know they fit in, surely it's better to pay even 1 million for a tried and tested player than 300k on someone who could end up stuck in the reserves for the next 3 years til we can get rid of them on a free transfer?

I don't really think Coady would sign though, he seems to think he's got a shot at Liverpool. I don't, i imagine most people don't, but if he feels he's got a chance then there's no way he'd come here on a permo.

As for wages well that's hard to say witout knowing how much either of them would want. I'd push the boat out a little, but obviously there has to be a limit. We need some strikers too, it's no good using up the budget on these two then we can't sign any strikers. But then it's no use signing strikers, if these two leave and aren't properly replaced.

Even if we cant/don't get them ,other players are benefitting from playing alongside these guys and getting experience of playing with decent colleagues.

In Clough's pre (or post) match interview on RS last night- I can't recall which one, he hinted that a season long loan for either or both could be feasible. If neither are going to feature for their parent clubs next season, I am sure they would rather be at United than a lot of other clubs despite the fact we are in L1

I understand that clubs may take only a certain number of players on loan. Fair enough, I would love Brayford and Coady to stay at the Lane next season. The Prince should ensure that wages would not be a problem; both players, fingers crossed will have had trips to Wembley, which no Championship club could have offered.

Their parent clubs must be impressed with the progress the players have made under the guidance of Nigel and his staff.
Perhaps there could be another way. A buy to buy back deal? If this were feasible .it would benefit all concerned, not least United, who will have saved their loan options for the big push next season. Just a thought.. Ideally of course a straight transfer with sell on clauses could also be an option.

I don't think buying them would be the problem, it's their wages in comparison to the rest of the team that could well be...
As for loan players, you can have as many as you like but no more than five can be in the match day squad ....

Am I right in thinking most of Brayford's wages are paid for by Cardiff? Not so sure we could afford him.

Defiantly try and get them for next season since they are very good talents, but if wages is all they care about then they can just sit on bench for Cardiff/Liverpool for all I care.

Interesting post...I recall earlier this season thinking about the role of both Brayford and Coady, and who might take their places if they do return to their parent clubs. I seem to remember a right back who played for Shrewsbury called Woods. There seemed to be a consensus that he had the qualities we might find useful, especially if we don't have Brayford at t'Lane.

If I recall, the way it has been laid out by the Prince and others at the club is that there will be a gradual spend depending on which division we're in. I understand the logic of this, but if a gift horse falls into our lap, do we turn a blind eye to the possibility of signing such a gift? Guys like Brayford, especially at this level, are few and far between, and he represents exactly what we need if we're to respond to those other teams who choose to spend and buy talented players. Purchasing Brayford, assuming it was possible, would, in a year or two, seem like very good business. Everyone agrees on his quality, from the manager through to the supporters, so if there is the slightest chance that a deal could be struck, get the Beard signed, the present and long-term benefits are as clear as day. As for Coady, from reading his own comments it seems that he's focussed on trying to make his mark at Anfield, so unless a deal can be struck, and he changes his mind, we should be begin to look elsewhere.

I can see them coming back on loan next season to be honest. Brayford might sign for a champ club though :(

I would be very annoyed and frustrated if Coady turned up next year at MKD or Peterborough on loan. It would be bad enough to lose his services, but to then find he was playing for a promotion rival would add salt to the wound.

Brayford is a different kettle of fish, and will be on decent wages. I suspect he would have to take a pay cut to sign for us. Very difficult if a host of Championship clubs are interested as well that will match his earnings.

Perhaps some sort of promotion bonus might work?

We will prob end of with Coady back for another 6 month deal.

Brayford will probably goto another Champioship team.

Plus as some one has already said Liverpool may want to stretch Coady by putting him with a Championship team..

[coady will go back to his parent club pre season as all loanees do but I feel if he had the opportunity to come back here either on loan or bought I think he would jump at the chance listening to some of the interviews he has with the Liverpool channel he bigs up Sheffield utd and recognises what clough has done for him I can't see him wanting to sign for another first division club eitherOTE="KenMcnaughtsNuts, post: 590992, member: 5499"]I'd be trying to sign them. If NC's own knowledge added to his scouting team are worth their pennies (which I believe they will be) then even if the worst case scenario happened and we didn't get either back on loan/perm then I suspect they will have others just as capable in mind. The success created in the 2nd half of the season will have highlighted us to a number of players that would have turned their noses up before the princes arrival and NC's miracles.

We are on the up and are proving this now. Joining us in pre season will mean joining a team with genuine title/promotion credentials. We also look a great place for those prem clubs looking to blood the promising youngsters and I suspect NC and his team have already had offers for players to take under their wing.

We have to remember that its not always about money with all footballers. To some its still about playing the game. Especially if its regular and with loyal and passionate support. Rather be a legend that had earned a decent living than a sub who earned a fortune. Rather had been in the team that won leagues and went on cup runs than someone who just wore the suit to the big games.

Personally I would love for both to stay, by whatever means, but I don't run a football club.

Anyway, what championship team can offer European football next year ;-) UTB

Take your point Sandy,. Loan players are, or should be important. If you do no intend to play them, with a view to improving results, why on earth would you want to sign them in the first place.

If our scouts have done their jobs, we should have the best available sqad within our means. .

I think, or maybe hope, people are bigging Brayford up a bit here. He signed for Cardiff and did nowt. Never got a look in.
No reason to think they want to keep him if we make a decent bid. Sure he could get a gig at several Championship clubs, but there's no guarantee he will be in the first team. Here he knows he's in the team. He's got a manager who he gets on with. Why would he choose a random Championship side over that? Unless a big Championship or low EPL side come in and say yeah i want you to start every week, there's every reason he'd rather come here.

The wages may well be a big obstacle i admit. No idea if Cardiff getting relegated would reduce his wages or not. Hopefully, the wages could be a big problem for other clubs too. If he's still on Premiership wages, no Championship club would want to match that. Cardiff could be faced with having to pay a large chunk of his wages whoever he moves to, and be happy to ship him out on loan if another club say pays half his wages. Obviously if the Cardiff manager, whoever it is next season, fancies Brayford that would pretty much be that finished.

Brayford is the most dynamic full back I have seen for the Blades although his crosses can be overhit at times
