Was Robson cheap ? Was Speed cheap ? Was Blackwell cheap ? What makes you think Adams will be cheap ?(exisiting manager, compensation to pay, experienced ???)It's a phrase that is always brought out but doesn't stack up on the majority of occasions.

Robson wasn't the "cheap" option and I suspect no-one has ever suggested he was. In fact, Kendall aside, he was probably the most high profile manager in the clubs history. The fact everyone suspected he was a busted flush and the club didn't mean he has also been the biggest disaster.

I would say, looking back over the years Furphy, Haslam, McEwan, Thomson, Bassett, Warnock, Blackwell and Speed HAVE all been, in their way, the cheapest, or very nearly so, option at the time. This isn't always a bad thing but to say it isn't the case is mistaken in my view.

Bruce,Spackman were quite high profile as well.
Of those you mention,I would suspect McEwan,Heath and Thompson were the 'cheap' options due to the finances at the time.

The point I was trying to make is that the phrases 'cheap','cheap option' and 'cheap as cheap' are often banded about under KM's reign but it doesn't seem to stack up.

In Warnock's time, despite the myth told by some fans,Warnock was backed during the last 18 months of his tenure and he spent over £15million pounds with no pressure to sell(remember Horsfield,Akinbiyi,Shelton,Fathi,Leighertwood etc). He then backed Robson in terms of transfer fees and in particular salaries.

He then backed KB for the first 12 months(Evans,Henderson,Cotterill,Halford on loan) and kept the majority of the rest.

Then the money ran out.

I thought Speed was a good option at the time but should have been given the whole of the summer(KB should have been sacked earlier) however an apparant sort after young manager wouldn't have been 'cheap'

I seem to rememer a period with SOD that the Donny fans wanted rid. I remember Donny fans coming on P&G demanding his sacking. Longterm he is the man, but there will be times along the way we may get disillusioned.

And I'm sure that will be in SO'D's thoughts. No idea who was in the Donny team when he took over but you'd like to think that if he's got the likes of Bartley, Reid, Willo, Britton in the spine of the team, he's got a decent enough foundation to start from. Yes it will take time but I also think he would have a reasonable starting point and we now a fair proportion of our squad can pass the ball when they want to.

It didn't take Billy long to adapt did it :)

Speed took a huge pay cut to manage Wales on £200K per year. I've never understood why it's so widely accepted that he was a cheap option. I'd suggest he was anything but.

I find it absolutely astounding that Carver is even being touted by Radio Sheffield for the managers job.

This is a guy who we bought in only a couple of months ago as a coach. Ok he has a decent reputation as a coach but he has a mixed track record as caretaker and virtually nil as a manager. He has no connection with Utd either.

He shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the others on the shortlist and it would be an enormous risk to even consider him. Let him work his way up managing in the lower leagues first like most of the other candidates have.

I would have thought because he was already on the payroll. Didn't we just swap a hefty playing contract for a coaching and then a managerial one? From that point of view he wasn't getting peanuts but we weren't adding to the cost of employing him as we would have been by recruiting from outside.

His coaching role and salary were replaced by someone from another club. And if his contact was already a large one, it can't be used as evidence for us doing things on the cheap. Clearly he was being paid handsomely as a result of us not doing things on the cheap. In fact, judging by the wagebill over the last few years, the last thing we can be accused of is doing things on the cheap. Actually, we've made an art of getting in below average quality at way above average prices. And that's the issue for me.

I remember a certain Danny Wilson who did a better job than S.O'd at a small club and look what happened to him when he took on a higher profile outfit.
