Why do people get so het up over being referred to as Sheffield.

For me, it's a compliment, there's only one team in Sheffield so everyone knows who the person is referring to.

Let's be honest, outside of England, nobody has even heard of a fucking Sheffield Wednesday if they're under 30 years old.

Alternatively it fucks people off because they look beyond the Sheffield post code and see it as disrespectful because know one goes around calling Manchester United, Manchester..

A friend gets annoyed when I call Plymouth Argyle just Plymouth. I've tried to change. I didn't think there was anything wrong with that as they're a one City club. But they only call themselves Argyle.

Nobody calls Man Utd or Man City just "Manchester". Ever. Which is the most obvious and relevant point. Personally think it makes the person saying "Sheffield" look clueless about football and/or clueless about how to talk.

Maybe I should get more things in my life, but it pisses me right off, so it does. No doubt it pisses fans of Sheffield fc off too as they are the only Sheffield.

If I ever have a conversation with someone and they say they support Utd (I know full well who they mean but I’m such a cad) I’ll always say ‘nice one, I’m a Blade too, int it great being a blade, a fan of the original Utd, it’s never dull is it’. Not sure why they disappear so quickly mind

I'm guilty of the original United thats for sure 🤣

And you don't see the obvious difference?
The obvious difference being there are two relevant teams in n Manchester and one in Sheffield I know I get it.. but I’m not talking about the irrelevant team in Sheffield I’m talking about the fact we are United the originals and people should respect that enough to use it. globally people use United to refer to Man Utd and Sheffield when referring to us. It’s those people that can fuck off.

Because there's two teams worth talking about in Manchester. Evidently, we are the only ones worth bothering about Sheffield, which, surely is a good thing?

It's the same with Bristol City. I try and remember to add the City when talking about the more successful of the two teams but almost inevitably just call them Bristol and their reaction is the same as ours.

The Manchester conundrum is easy: just refer to them by their original name of Newton Heath.

And Ardwick

To state the obvious, the Manchester clubs are in the same division, nobody would know who they were talking about if they just said Manchester. If someone says Sheffield, everyone will know who they are talking about, because there is only one Sheffield club in the EPL.

Plymouth Parkway of the Southern League South will be offended by that 🤣

There was a time overseas casual football fans would call Manchester United Manchester as man city weren't really on their radar.

The premier league is significantly bigger worldwide since the pigs darkened its doors. I don't blame them whatsoever. It's a little weird when English or Scottish pundits 30+ say it but I guess it shows how even they really don't factor in that lot

Because it's rooted in ignorance.

Sheffield United is a club with its own distinct history, traditions and identity.

And although I loathe Sheffield Wednesday and would prefer it if they fucked off into oblivion, they are as well.

And given that I support one of those clubs and I don't like the other one, I especially want that distinction to be recognised.

Doesn't upset me at all. In fact, when I see people correcting others on Twitter or wherever it makes me cringe...hard.

Especially when they tag Sheffield FC. And the cunts run with it. The same level of banter as someone saying 'did you sleep here?' when you turn up at work before someone else.

Yawn

Nobody hates us being called “Sheffield” more than the pigs. But to be perfectly honest both United and Wednesday haven’t really covered themselves in glory over the last 50 years, with neither club being able sustain a presence in the top flight, and promote Sheffield as a 2 club city. With the likes of Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham almost surrendering their names, the Mancs have been using the name United unchallenged for so far too many years now to change it.

I like it because I know it winds some people up a lot. Sheffield FC probably like it because they might get a few more clicks on google as a result, pigs hate it because they think they're massive and some of our fans seem to get irate about it even though it suggests that we're the one and only club in Sheffield.

In the early 2000s I studied in Rome and Man U were always referred to as “Manchester”. I’d imagine that has changed now though!

Not sure that it is necessarily anything to do with Man Utd just being referred to as United, while that annoys me, its more to do with there being only one relevant team in Sheffield. So let's just embrace it as the complement that it probably is. It's going to happen more then ever next season and if it winds up the pigs, then even better - I might even start saying it myself!

Being called Sheffield... used to be shite, but now it’s all right 🎵

... for the reasons stated above, and then using the opportunity to inform people about us being the original United is an extra bonus 😊

As has been said, we’re going to get it all season, so we may as well try to embrace it.

Never mind Sheffield FC fan’s thoughts. I wonder what the fans of Sheffield City FC (play at Forge Valley School) and Sheffield Town FC (play at Fir Vale school) think about the media calling us Sheffield? Who knew there were so many Sheffields!

The original names of the teams in Sheffield were:-

Sheffield
Hallam
The Wednesday
The United

When anyone says United I always say “Do you mean The United or Manchester?”

As the World’s First, Sheffield Club have quite a lot of international members. A top half finish this season - and a new stadium to come - they’ll soon be on their way up and passing The Wednesday on their way down!

UTB & Slava Ukraini

Warnock on his pre match presser v Cardiff, even went as far as to referring to Cardiff fans as Bluebirds fans, but refers to the team he is supposed to support in his home city as Sheffield..it comes across as dismissive and disrespectful..I mean i can accept it from someone who has no connection to Sheffield or United, but he should know better.
