Seeing as we look to be spending money on it, we might as well support the thing.

As a bump to this, apparently officials from the World Cup venue people (don't know what their official title is) are visiting Sheffield this week and will go to the Lane and Hillsborough ().

Can we organise a consignment of paint brushes for them all, to be handed out as they arrive in S6?

English bloke (beaming with pride) : "Here we are gentlemen, Bramall Lane."

FIFA bloke : "Ja, zer gut. Iz eine shiny und sexystadion. Ja."

Other FIFA bloke : "Si, muy impressivo, y los pie stand muy muy grande."

An hour later............

English bloke (cringing with embarrassment) : "Here we are gentlemen, Hillsborough."

FIFA bloke : "Was ist das? Eine kakkenholen. Eine grosse kakkenholen. Scheisse."

Other FIFA bloke : "Santa mierda! Los tip municipales! Lavabo! Muy espantoso."

Other English bloke, under his breath : "I fucking told you Trevor, they'll never let us host it if we want to include this shithole. And why have they all been given paintbrushes?"

Brilliant!

On this subject, I've heard that they're using Don Valley bowl as the main fan zone area. Great idea, but having been to Cologne, Germany in 06 the set up was much more centralised to the City and everything was around the old town and then for the England Sweden game they put a massive fan zone just over the river. All walkable from the train/ Bus station. There was also a lot of hotels as Cologne is a conference and exhibition city.

I don't think that theres any competition from Hillsborough for the ground so if Sheffield gets it then we're very well placed to have the games at the lane.

I think the pull of Sheffield will be that the Lane is a tradional style ground, but with excellent facilities and a cracking atmosphere, plus its very close to the City centre and train/ buses.

Hopefully there'll also be events on Fargate and the Moor (if they bulldoze half of it) and open the Moor up a bit.

Against Sheffield would be the location of the Fanzone and the lack of european quality transport links to airports.

We're in a great position to get it but of course we'll never get England games, surely they'll all be played at Wembley!

In '96, I did some work for the FSA (now the FSF) for the 'Fans Embassy' in Sheffield. We were very fortunate in that we were given quite a large, ground floor room in the Old Town Hall for it. Denmark absolutely invaded and drank the city centre dry. If I remember rightly, there was a 'fanzone' around Don Valley then too. There were also rumblings of a tenting area up at Dore Moor as well, but that never came to fruition.

Logistically though, the tram runs directly from Don Valley to Hellsbore, and (currently) the Lane isn't signposted on any tram stops, and the easiest route from the tram to the Lane is a fair walk along St Mary's Gate and then along Shoreham Street or Bramall Lane, depending on what stand the fans are in.

Unfortunately, there are also the commercial possibilities in Hellsbore Park.

I don't think that there's any doubt that the Lane is the better ground, but I still think that they'll go with Hellsbore if Sheffield gets a berth, purely on the number of seats, unless we really do increase the capacity.

You can bet your last euro that the Guinness tent will be out ;)

If they use Don Valley as a fanzone, then as things stand the location is great for Hellsbore, and less so for the Lane. We'd be paired with another city for Group matches (probably Derby or Nottingham, looking at the bids) if we got a spot, so East Mids would be fine. Equally, unless those two are also thinking of increasing capacity, we'd host the seeded team in the group as well, so fans of that country are more likely to stay in Sheffield and the surroundings.

I'd love it to come to Sheffield full stop, but I just have this nagging feeling that if it did, Hellsbore would just get the vote, despite it being a shithole.

There's talk of them having to spend close to £6 million to meet the other ground requirements though, beyond capacity, and that's £6 million they just don't have.

Plus they have to have a four star hotel within a certain mile radius of the ground... which they lack.

Plus the last look round by this technical team in September, so the requirements, or firm plans, have to be in place by then.

It isn't quite as cut and dry as you think.

I'd imagine that the council would be only too pleased to pour £6m of our money into doing that shithole up, though - whether we like it or not.

Very good, especially my bit.:D

I think that both stadiums have a decent chance of hosting matches, if we can get our capacity up above 40,000 and if Wendy can spend the cash to do up their dump.
But let's get this absolutely straight. If our fucktard council, in their infinite wisdom, decide to get involved and spend even a penny of our Council Tax on any of their ground improvements then we should protest long and loud.
Spending money on policing it, fine. Spending our money on stuff in the city, I can cope with that. Just. It was bad enough the council jizzing our money up the wall on the World Student Games, but giving Wendy a helping hand should get rioters out on the streets.

If Wendy can pay for it themselves then fair enough. But they'd better not want any of my money for it.

The entourage has just this minute arrived to look around the academy complete with police escort and blacked out windows.

Get some surveillance shots :D

If there's two coppers on motorbikes and a people carrier type thing then I've seen them earlier, unless it was some other freeloaders with a police escort.

if the minimum is 40k then correct me if i'm wrong but the pigs would have to find somewhere to fit in a couple of hundred seats, wouldn't they

To be honest, i'd love the world cup to come to Sheffield. It would be brilliant for the city and for football.

But who really cares where it's at, especially if you have to spend money on the ground to make it up to standard.

Seems a waste. Money on the playing side? Yes please.

Money wasting on the ground? No thank you, especially when neither of us sell out week in week out and neither of us have a definate chance to in the next season or so.
