From The Telegraph
They are no stranger to a left-sided centre-back at Sheffield United. Two years before Jack O’Connell arrived at Bramall Lane they had
Harry Maguire making a name for himself and eventually becoming an England hero.
O’Connell has put together a compelling case to join Maguire in Gareth Southgate’s squad and stake a claim for years’ delayed European Championship. It would be a similar late run into the team that Maguire made a year ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
He returned to Chris Wilder’s starting line-up against Wolves after coming off the bench at the weekend, his first start since a
knee injury ruled him out of the start of Project Restart. John Egan grabbed the last-gasp winner but his returning team-mate helped keep the score level before that.
The Blades suffered an indifferent resumption to football following sport’s suspension for the coronavirus pandemic, with O’Connell’s absence leaving a huge hole that proved almost impossible to fill.
In Wilder’s system he pops up everywhere. On the left side of three centre-backs, he barks orders like an old-fashioned stopper and points to where his team-mates need to be, noticeably more louder than Egan in the heart of the defence.
Yet he often finds himself in full-back positions both attacking and defending. Against Wolves, that means facing Adama Traore running at pace, as well as the primary objective to keep Raul Jimenez quiet. There was also the small matter of Matt Doherty overloading that side of the pitch. It takes organisation, concentration and bravery to keep Nuno Espírito Santo’s team down to limited chances.

Southgate has looked at different systems since his three-man defence took England to the World Cup semi-finals but O’Connell looks capable of adapting. He showed his range of passing to switch play and find his fellow centre-back Chris Basham at the other side of the pitch. As an ‘overlapping centre-back’ he would also find himself in positions of a winger. It was his cross in the first half that found Oli McBurnie and produced the only shot on target of the opening 45 minutes.
Southgate’s last squad had Maguire at the heart but O’Connell has arguably had a more eye-catching season than the others - Tyrone Mings, John Stones and Fikayo Tomori - who faced Kosovo last November.
O’Connell showed the other side to his game with a professional foul on Diogo Jota, earning a booking. At the other end was another vocal, strong performance from another uncapped centre-back in Connor Coady. It gives Southgate options he may not have planned before the pandemic.
