Thinking back, there might also have been a flimsy claim we were looking at Bebeto as well.
Yep, I remember reading that in the daily mail when I was a kid!

I'll add Artur Moses. We had all-but-signed him and then the transfer just disappeared.

Yuri Celi.

Kieran Richardson (had his photo taken, and then Roy Keane called him and said come to PL Sunderland and off he went).

Cresswell. Came up for a medical in 2005 and Leeds called him up, off he went.

Kinkladze. Adrian Heath came out to do the usual PR that we were close to getting him from Ajax. Lovejoy asks him on Soccer AM about the rumour, says no and goes to Derby.

Lee Morris. Warnock had him in. Leicester came offered a few more quid a week and took him from under our nose. Warnock was fuming.

Stan Collymore. Warnock again! Got Pesch instead and Collymore went to Oviedo, played once and retired.

Benni McCarthy. Warnock tried signing him, called his agent and almost had a heart attack when his agent quoted his wages. We then put Beattie on a higher wage in a lower division the season after.

Who was the lad that was heavily linked on the same day as Jerome Sinclair? Was it Quina, perhaps?

I must pay more attention! My choice was Maradona, but have now realised he has already been named, so post edited

You mean that couscous type stuff you get in Holland and Barrett?

No, but my phone did auto-correct to that before I spotted it.

Domingos Quina, then of West Ham or perhaps Watford, depending on which window it was.

There were stories in the Star at the time saying we’d bid for him and were in talks. Then that weekend Georgi was on the phone to Soccer AM and they asked him if he was close to joining us. He replied with incredulity saying something like “who? Oh no, I’ve heard nothing about that.”

Another couple we were linked with around that time (and a similar time to Gazza) were Mark Hughes and one of the Laudrups. Thinking back, there might also have been a flimsy claim we were looking at Bebeto as well. Hamilton Ricard probably counts as well.
Mike McDonald was a thoroughly unlikable guy and not adverse to talking absolute shite about who we were in for to ‘excite’ the fans.

Tbf he got John Street built and we did have a fun team for a couple of years there.

The Rumour Mill thread is 98 pages spread over going on for 10 years
Even now he wouldn't be a bad signing, very steady good competitor and good distribution
