The board wouldn't stump up the £60000 to get him from Brighton, so he went to To Robert Maxwells Oxford , then Robert Maxwells Derby. We signed Richard Cadette instead.

Richard Cresswell has to be one of the closest signings. He’d supposedly just pulled up in the Lane car park to sign for us when he took a call from Dirty Leeds who he supported as a kid and drove up the M1 to sign for them. He signed for us later but I never forgave him so it doesn’t count

He did, Ive mentioned it before but I remember as a kid around 1995 back page of the Star years before we did sign him saying we were about to sign our first £1 million pound player and it was between Masinga and Ullathorne, ended up being neither.

There were stories in the Star at the time saying we’d bid for him and were in talks. Then that weekend Georgi was on the phone to Soccer AM and they asked him if he was close to joining us. He replied with incredulity saying something like “who? Oh no, I’ve heard nothing about that.”

Another couple we were linked with around that time (and a similar time to Gazza) were Mark Hughes and one of the Laudrups. Thinking back, there might also have been a flimsy claim we were looking at Bebeto as well. Hamilton Ricard probably counts as well.
