Shea Charles

Agree….i was driving on Sunday and listened to the 1st half commentary on Talksport 2.
One of the commentators said that the Leeds midfield has been surprisingly poor in the 1st half.
They said Tanaka and Rothwell both almost always dominate midfield but said that the box to box athleticism of Shea Charles has stopped them from performing.

So it seems that Charles strength isn’t so much what he does when he has the ball……his strength is what he does without the ball.
These kind of players, at first glance, go under the radar.

I’d be surprised if Southampton do recall him this season.
Is he going to get a game there? And if he did play, surely it would effect his confidence losing every week.
Would imagine the Southampton plan is to make him available for loan in the Championship and send him to the highest bidder.
If there’s little interest then you would probably send him back to Sheff Wed but only if they pay a higher loan fee.
They want a look at him! New manager. ! as someone said same as Arblaster .Premiership experience won't do him any harm even when losing! Arblaster a good example again.

If for whatever reason Charles isn’t attainable long term and there’s a good chance he won’t be then the next City defensive midfielder off the rank could be well worth a look in the summer.

Jacob Wright is performing very well in PL2 this year with 3 goals and 6 assists in 10 appearance from defensive midfield and 2 goals in 3 in the UEFA youth league. If city go on another spendageddon this summer he could be one who shakes loose and has his pathway blocked and if we go up we might have the cash to actually buy him as a permanent asset rather than a loan that we develop for city to sell on elsewhere like Doyle and probably McAtee.

On yesterday’s showing (admittedly through a TV screen) he appears very similar in physique, ability & role (albeit he did drop into a back 3 for a while) to Sousa.
Dominant with a decent touch but not especially creative nor swift - not sure the two together would be ideal although we’d be a bastard to get through down the middle
On balance I think Peck (or Davies) offers a better balanced partnership with Sousa:-
Charles would be a good replacement as / when / if VS moves on

We seem to be interested in that more defensive type of CM this window with Hamza and now Charles I wonder if want the option of playing a really solid holding midfield 2 in certain games.

Would imagine Wilder is already thinking about how we set up if and when we reach the Premier league.

We’re in a really lucky position because Wilder has seen the Premier league at close quarters as recently as last season.
You would think he’ll know exactly why we struggled and what’s needed to make sure we are more competitive when we return.

For example he might be thinking of going back to a back 5, playing 3 centre backs.
If Alfie Gilchriest has already told Wilder he’s agreeable to signing for us, then Wilder might move Gilchriest to playing on the right of 3 centre backs.
Wilder did state in todays interview that we’re after a right back and he brought up that Alfie can play centre back.
He excelled as centre back playing 17 times for Chelsea last season, think he played in a back 5 there, so he’s clearly PL level.

Or he might be thinking at Premier league level, defensive midfielders protecting the defence is one of the most important positions on the pitch.
Hence the interest in an athletic box to box stopper like young Charles.

Yeah if we do go up I think there’s a lot to be excited about if we’ve got enough backing to be competitive.

Charles is a strong athletic defensive midfielder.

He's probably the sort that doesn't stand out on TV, but if you're at the game you'll see everything he does.
He was easily the best player on the pitch yesterday. Considering the stuff going on off the pitch, that's even more impressive.

I reckon it's almost certain he'd go back to a Back 3 if we get promoted again this season. Dependent on when he'll be fit again I could see him going back for Soutter for the middle of it with maybe Anel left and Gilchrist right.

Don't think we'd go back to 2 up front so could see more of a 343 or 3421 formation so would probably need 2 defensive minded CM's hence his interest in Charles and Choudary.

Funny how people see the games differently, I watched the second half and was sat thinking he looked slow and a bit clumsy and that he doesn't offer anymore than what Peck does (purely based on that 45mins, and albeit against good opposition). FWIW I thought Bannan played better than him.

Not that I disagree with what you said, but playing in a back 5 at Chelsea is a totally different kettle of fish than playing in a back 5 or 4 for a newly promoted side, where they are more likely to be defending for 80 mins of the game, with "lesser" quality around him to help out.

Folk with keener hearing than mine will confirm, but I thought the Wednesday fans at Leeds were singing “Shea Charles is a Wednesday fan”.

#doubt

The main advantage on Charles over other centre mids is that he can play centre back too and he's 6.2ft tall so he's not a short centre back neither.

I think we'll definitely be trying to sign Charles on loan. It appears that Cannon and JJK are the two permanent ones we're after.

Fair point however I'd say Arblaster quickly outgrew league 1, so was wasting his time staying at Port Vale.

However Charles is good but not yet a stand out player who is clearly too good for the Championship, he's still developing well and growing at Sheff Wed. If he returns to Southampton and doesn't play regularly, then it brings his rapid progression to a halt, could damage his career.

The manager needs to quickly decide (this window) if he sees Charles as a big part of Southamptons future so they are going to play him most matches this season in the PL no matter what..in preparation for a promotion challenge in the Championship next season.

He faded a bit second half but then he was doing a job of two men in the first half as Bannan wanders about!

Yeh I watched it on TV and he was dropping into defense a lot and then pushing into midfield as well.

Didn't venture too far up the pitch though but then again Wendy created next nothing.

He worked really hard at trying to break up the Leeds attacking moves and pressed well.

Corner kicks were very good.

In a good side would be the real deal.

At times there were similarities in his game to Jude Bellingham, or at least the JB of a few years ago when he broke through at Birmingham.
(Not saying he is as good as of course before someone jumps on)

This lad has a bit of a nasty streak in him too - a bit like Peck. He'll leave a foot in, give someone an un-necessary shoulder barge, etc. just to let opposition players know he's there and not to be foooked with. Like that :)
The quality and work rate is there too - but I'd be surprised if Southampton don't keep him for next year's Championship campaign.
