A few years ago we had a guy who did a lot of work on our house. He was originally from a travelling family, and his Dad had been a champion bare knuckle fighter.
Our guy’s name was Danny Collins and he had been a very successful wrestler under the name Danny Boy Collins. He wrestled seriously as a sport, as well as in the entertainment side for the money. He was a world champion as well as being tag partner to Big Daddy or Giant Haystacks or someone.
Anyway, Danny was the hardest bloke I will ever meet - as well as one of the gentlest. He had had more than 50 fractures, and once drove through the night from Bristol to Manchester after a night fighting, with a smashed left leg and his nose close to horizontal.
Danny was a legend with our dentist as, for obvious reasons, he needed frequent work. The dentist was amazed because he would never have any anaesthetic. What amazed them was that Danny didn’t just take the pain, he appeared not to feel it. Danny said to me that the first thing that wrestler’s learn is how to literally switch off pain.
So, although I have never watched wrestling I do have a huge respect for them as athletes.
Oh - he also had an IT degree from Leeds and he was the best tiler I have ever had.
