Nottingham Forest v Sheffield United: Man arrested after Billy Sharp assaulted during pitch invasion

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after the Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp was headbutted by a pitch invader following his side’s play-off semi final defeat by Nottingham Forest.

Thousands of Forest fans piled onto the City Ground pitch after their side prevailed in a penalty shoot-out, with United having won the second leg 2-1 to level the tie at 3-3 on aggregate. While most of the supporters invaded the pitch in good spirits, one fan charged at Sharp and allegedly butted him.

Sharp, 36, was left bloodied and needing stitches. He was not in the matchday squad due to a calf injury and was standing in the dugout after the final whistle when the incident occurred.

Forest last night promised to ban the supporter for life, while the Sheffield United manager, Paul Heckingbottom, also urged strong action to be taken. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed on Wednesday that a 31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assault.

“He remains in custody and will be questioned by officers,” Chief Inspector Paul Hennessy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said. “Our enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing. We have spoken to the player concerned and we are working with both clubs who are supporting us with our investigation.”

Sharp, who spent a season on loan at Forest a decade ago, called the supporter a “scumbag” but said he would not let the incident “ruin my respect for the Forest fans”.

“One mindless idiot ruined what was an unbelievable night of football,” Sharp said in social media post. “Congratulations to Nottingham Forest on their victory and good luck in the final. As an ex-Forest player I will not let one scumbag ruin my respect for the Forest fans.

“Incredibly proud to be captain of this group of Sheffield United players, they gave their all and can hold their heads up high. We will be back and go again. Thanks for all your messages and support after the incident.”

The Sheffield United manager Heckingbottom said: “Bill was minding his own business off the pitch, trying to get our players away. He was assaulted on the blind side — cowardly — and knocked to the ground.

“He has had stitches and is shook up. His safety was put at risk at a place of work. We have the footage and something will be done about it.”

Sharp did not feature in the game but was standing on the sideline in a tracksuit when he was attacked.

Forest have condemned the violence and committed to work with the authorities. A statement from the Championship club read: “Nottingham Forest Football Club are appalled to learn that our former player, Billy Sharp, was assaulted leaving the pitch after tonight’s match at the City Ground.

“The club will work with the authorities to locate the individual in order that they are held to account for their actions, which will include a life ban from Nottingham Forest. The club would also like to apologise to Billy personally and to Sheffield United Football Club.”

This was the second night in a row where the post-match scenes overshadowed the action on the pitch in a Championship play-off semi-final.

On Monday, the Luton Town manager, Nathan Jones, dubbed Huddersfield Town fans “an absolute disgrace” after some confronted Jones and his players and others taunted Luton’s 2,000 travelling contingent following their 1-0 defeat in the second leg in Yorkshire.

“Some of them were taunting and abusing our fans. I’ve seen a mother with a little kid, if that was my wife I’d be disgusted,” Jones said.

Shame we didn't get to show our players some appreciation, but a pitch invasion was to be expected I suppose. Never a great way to end a season.

However, it was the nature of it, with a lot of them (including some of their players) more interested in winding Blades up than actually celebrating their win. Same goes for the twats spouting down from the upper tier.

Shown themselves to be a fan base with a higher than average portion of complete and utter cunts.

I can imagine Jordan will be having his say, and rightly so, but this is black and white with Billy, only the most idiotic of football fans would defend the actions of this fan.

I imagine Jordan will say that Forest will win the play offs now. I'm not so sure, I can see Huddersfield's tactics really not suiting Forest. Hudders sit with a low block (park the bus) they'll be no space for Forest's counter attack football and Hudders are a really though team to play against; all the pressure's on Forest and after beating us it reminds me of when we did Forest in 2003 and we all thought it was our year but that we all know how it ended. much as I hate saying it, I'd rather Forest go up because they'll sell Johnson and re-invest the money and Cooper has many contacts with the PL clubs academies, he'll sign some good young players on loan and they'll be strong again. I think this is a one off for Hudders and I can't see them strong next season like Forest will. Heart wants a Hudders win though!

I certainly think yesterday will have knocked their confidence. I think we may have done Huddersfield a huge favour. Playing them off the park at their home ground and turning around a 2 goal deficit in 45 minutes will effect them. Once the euphoria of going through wears off the scars of last night will show

Agree - last night coupled with the no-show against Bournemouth shows they're capable of freezing when on the biggest stage.

If nothing else it was a moral victory for us last night. They thought the tie was already over. We came from behind, silenced their crowd, won over 120 mins, and they were absolutely bricking it. The fact that they had to rely on penalties when it was a supposed done deal means they'll not be as confident going into the fnal now.

its not that long ago Leicester City player was attacked at Forest in the FA cup
the club needs to play behind closed in future at least 1 season

I think we are all guilty of over hyping them. Simon Jordan currently saying we battered them but Forest have the luck

I want to know when, where, what time this prick in is in court, how can I access this info?

I will be asking Blades to turn out in solidarity for Billy to the court room, as the cunt is sent down for his cowardly, unprovoked attack.

I would imagine that it will be tomorrow?

Just give Huddersfield a bye to the prem ?

They won’t do that though cos they want the cash from a full Wembley, after all football is more about cash than morals!
problem is huddersfield are just as bad, & if im being honest if your going to chuck out forest for assault then, youve got to chuck huddersfield out for lobbing coins in to the away end

Appalled by what happened to Billy who was not only not playing but already injured too.

Dignified, classy and Captain's response from him as well.

Jordan is saying he has a witness who states mcburnie and sharp were goading the forest fans

Probably at a magistrates tomorrow yes.

But it's an open and shut case. Billy was assaulted by this piece of shit and required stitches. No doubt the piece of shit is out of work or under some stress or having problems with drink or marital issues. Something a barrister might use to defend it. Though there's no defending it at all.

Has anyone heard Simon Jordan on talksport? Talking a load of shit saying hes been told by a Forest fan mate of his that McBurnie and Sharp were abusing Forest fans and that contributed to the assault on Sharp.

Billy and Ollie need to get a replay of this programme and decide whether they need to get lawyers involved.

So Simon Jordan is using hearsay from a mate to justify an attack from someone who, judging from the direction they came from, wasn't in any earshot of any abuse anyway?

Jordan is clearly after some phonecalls. Got to keep the money coming in to the show. Ignore the lop-haired cunt

I can't believe he's got a mate. That's where the lie starts!

I know mate, I expect the case to all happen very quick. But I want the bustard to feel the weight of a large number of Sheffield Unitedn fans as he gets sent down.

As much as I might agree with you, that won't happen. It won't be hush hush or owt, but I won't be driving down just to give him the fingers. It's a shame it won't be dealt with by SYP though otherwise he'd be in our court.

Apparently some Notts journo messaged him last night to say this.

I'm assuming the same tinpot local hack would have had no problem with one of our fans going on to nut Johnson after he shouted fuck off to our fans after he scored.
