He is the best striker, everything considered, at the club.

Why would he not get an improved contract ?

The club had a 1 year option. They chose to extend it for a further year based on a sequence of solid performances (in the PL funnily enough!) just before lock down kicked in. The improved contract was earned and deserved. Other solid performers were awarded the same improved contracts. No issues there at all.

There is an ageist attitude on this forum that is as uncomfortable as it is inaccurate.

When player X reaches age Y, that’s it. Has to be put out to pasture or shot in the head and it’s no fucking good any longer.

As I say, our best all round #9 is being short changed (again) and this has fuck all to do with his contract situation.

A strap line so frequently peddled and yet so misguided !

Players peak in their 20’s, and quickly decline towards their mid thirties. That’s biology, not ageism for fucks sake.

But you might have at least argued that point (that you consider Sharp worthy of 2 years at 33) in the first place, rather than making up a line that my questioning of Sharp’s contract had been an ongoing theme of mine, or in some way excuses the other strikers for their shortcomings.

You’re right. We shouldn’t extend contracts to players over a certain age. They have no resale value so what’s the point eh ?!

My point was not as regards contracts. Maybe yours was.

My point was purely to illustrate I believe the gaffer has short changed the boy. That he could and should have had more pitch time and that this could and perhaps should have seen an improvement in our overall fortunes. If that is at all important to anyone 😉.

I guess we will never know for sure !

Fleck is, technically, our best player. Ask the players 👀😉. He is not in good form presently, but as they say, class is permanent !!

The wife’s should keep shtumm but when players in their positions (Sharp mostly as Os did OK) are emphatically not doing it, then it’s understandable that frustrations will kick in.

Sharp in particular should have had more minutes thus far. Wilder has been blindsided by transfer fees paid I am afraid !

Why should Sharp have more minutes ? If we were getting a lot of balls into the box then you might have a point but we are not and chasing balls down the channel isn't his strong point either. Time to face it at 34 he will only ever be on as a sub otherwise we really are fucked.

If my memory serves, at the time this mind bogglingly bad decision was made, was Sharp not producing on the pitch on a regular basis ? In the PL ? Just a few short months ago ?

Short memories some folks. Or maybe I’ve just plain vanilla lost it, as you state ?😂.

You’d have a case if others were doing it. They are not, to our severe detriment, clear for all to see.

More minutes for Sharp would have yielded a better overall output. There is no doubt in my mind about this. None.

The gaffer sees this differently. You and others too.

If any PL club came in it would be more than a ‘wee surprise’ to me. I can see top end championship clubs coming in for him to “get them over the line”.
Whether you can say the same about our other strikers has no relevance to the assessment of Sharp’s ability.

It patently does when he is being overlooked for woefully inept, injured, pain killing injected poor excuses for a CF.

The fact that McBurnie isn’t good enough doesn’t make Sharp a better player. McB is in the side for his aerial ability so he’s not keeping Sharp out of the team. I don’t think Sharp is good enough for the PL, he’d be far better in a top championship side who’ll create regular chances for him. That’s my opinion and shouting slogans at me isn’t going to change that.

You know where I stand on this one. Which is why I am frustrated at the gaffers choices atm.

No amount of aerial duels won, and lost, will change that !!!

This is far too simplistic a conclusion in my opinion.

We have not been at our creative best. For sure. I can get on board with that. Hoofball has much to answer for this !!!

But.

Let’s not hide behind this “we don’t create shit” strap line. It’s Bullcrap !!!

Not many , but you could ask the same question about Brewster , McBurnie , McGoldrick and Burke and the answer would be the same .

On this occasion I agree with Dronnie and still believe Billy Sharp to be the best all round striker on our books and by no means past it ( see Kevin Phillips , Teddy Sheringham etc . ) .

I also believe that there are at least half a dozen teams in the PL who , had he been in their sides on a regular basis , would have seen him notch more goals than we have in total .

I bet you more clubs ( not necessarily premiership ) would come in for Billy than Brewster.

Give me Billy any day over Brewster , i wish Billy would have had the time Brewster has had this season , at least he would have got a goal , might have been off his arse or surmmert but still a goal !
 
Flecks missus is probably scared she can't keep up her Colleen Rooney lifestyle if he drops outta the Premiership.

I'm fuming with Fleck, he was litterally my favourite player and he's completely lost the plot, his missus can fuck right off if she's blaming anyone but John for his pathetic recent performances.

Good post, both him and Sharp have know one to blame but themselves.

"Sharp is the best striker at the club"? I don't think so, Moose is the best striker at the club, even half fit he offers more at this level than Sharp could dream of.
 



Fleck and Sharp both have something to offer.

Fleck was quality last season and just looks short on confidence at the minute, the problem is it’s difficult to get confidence in a side that gets beaten every week. Due to his slump in form I can see why he’s been dropped but I wouldn’t give up on him just yet.

As for Sharp however, I’m baffled as to why he isn’t getting game time.

Agree with most on here however, it’s not for the wives to be moaning about this in public, if the players have a problem with Wilder then it’s for them to act like men and go and discuss it to his face, these things should be sorted out behind closed doors.
