A Championship footballer has appeared in court charged with drink driving.

Former Leeds United player Jamie Shackleton, who is now at Sheffield United, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Wednesday accused of being in charge of a motor vehicle when over the prescribed limit.

The court heard the 25-year-old blew 73 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath during a breathalyser test, more than double the legal limit of 35, after he was arrested at the Fairburn Ings nature reserve in Castleford on 21 December.

Mr Shackleton denied the offence and a trial date was set for 12 June at the same court.
Prosecuting, Melanie Ibbotson said police officers found Mr Shackleton, of Dovecote Drive in Ledston, Castleford, in the driving seat of a vehicle parked at the nature reserve.

The vehicle's lights were switched on, but its engine was not running, she said.

Mr Shackleton's solicitor Ben Whittingham said his client disputed being "in charge" of the vehicle.

Dressed in a suit, Mr Shackleton spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He has made 12 appearances for the Blades since joining the club in July 2024. He came through the Leeds United academy.

Well that explains why he went AWOL during the period where we needed him most.

What was he doing at a nature reserve over the drink drive limit?

Depends if he was on his own I suppose. If he was, no defence. If he was with his partner who had popped for a piss his brief will no doubt claim he wasn't driving/in charge and was sat in the car waiting for their return.

Either way, not good.

And he switched over to the driver's seat to keep it warm for her while she was gone?

Obviously goes without saying that if he want drink driving, well he is a bit of a bellend really isn’t he.

But, suppose he hadn’t and was in fact innocently sat in the car for whatever other various reason? The Vehicle wasn’t actually running therefore wasn’t being driven, in fact theoretically he could have had the keys in to power in up for the music whilst enjoying time with a loved one or friends at the nature reserve…

I am not making excuses for him in the slightest, however the earlier comment about how being caught in this situation can’t be argued I disagree with. Cars are media systems and the keys could have been in for that reason alone…. If the engine had been running then even if sat stationary you are bang to rights, but I don’t feel it to be a conclusive ‘collar’ on this occasion.

Castleford

  • Fairburn Ings, come off the A656 onto Newton Lane, past the industrial units, and the first car park on the right is a good spot with couples action after 9pm.

He’s not been charged with Drink driving, he’s been charged with ‘Being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed limit’
He or his brief, will have to convince the court that there was absolutely no possibility of him driving the vehicle. If as reported, the keys were in the ignition, I imagine that would hamper his chances of relying on such a defence.

I’m pretty sure that, Drunk in charge, does not however, carry an obligatory driving disqualification, you can just get points.

A possible defence would be, if his girlfriend can testify that she went for a piss in the bushes and when she came back, he’d got out of his child seat and was pretending to drive, but his feet wouldn’t reach the pedals, thus proving, it would have been impossible for him to have driven the car. 😉
