Seriki

Fortunate enough to be that physically well managed he can out sprint and out muscle.

Can cover mistakes with his pace and frightens the living daylights out of opposing dull backs and wingers when he gets his head down.

Improve his positional play and decision making (he is only 22) and he will be a star!

I really like the look of him. If we end up in the champ again next year and he has another to grow, he’ll be an absolute weapon. Some players are natural defenders (which he is not) but positioning is something that can be taught to an extent. He’ll just get batter now - pace, power, control, skill, decent awareness (see his assist last night).

Agree with the poster above about the standing off their wide player seemingly being a tactic. it looked that way to me. I’m not sure why that instruction would have been given though - with Seriki’s physicality he afford to get up close and then win the battle or make a recovery run. Standing off and letting the guy swing in an early cross seems strange. Unless CoV score all their goals from getting in behind and we were totally focused on not letting cut backs happen.

What a fantastic, fantastic talent. Just brilliant to see. And, as with the other young lads coming through, he gets (IMO) added patience as we're not expecting them to be the finished article. They have received their chance, almost through necessity at times, at truly taken it. Sublime player and unreal potential.

Also, good to see Gilchrist back, to start managing minutes between them.

Let's not forget Gilchrist is highly rated at Chelsea and last season was seen as a future club captain by some there.... Yet Seriki is simply miles better than him

Made a few mistakes early on, but class otherwise. An exciting player to have.

Definitely won his battle with his opponent, but seemed to give him acres of space in the second half. I'm not sure if he was told to do this, but it gave Coventry an easy out ball that even I could hit.

He's 21 ,22 end of April

It was an interesting battle. Their lad looks a prospect, but even given time and space, he rarely delivered anything dangerous.

Credit Seriki for holding firm, and then for creating more from fullback than his opposing winger could muster from countless take-ons.

Had a bit of a mare tonight but settled a little bit after his assist. That assist has been coming though and fair play to him after such a shaky start- probably started to get into his own head which is something he needs to work on.

Loved how the players got round him when celebrating TC's goal. Proper team this.
I don't think it did get into his head.... he had a nightmare first 15/20 as you said. Couldn't trap a bag of cement, poor touches etc... Does seem to fall over a lot too....

but then he still had the confidence to do multiple runs....

I'm a huge fan, that first 15 was probably the worst he's been for us, but then he was back to his swashbuckling best running at em after. Also thought he kept their best outlet in Mason Clarke pretty shackled.

He needs an awful lot of positional coaching as he's all over the shop and giving away far too much room.
He took a bit of a bollocking from a number of players tonight... and fair play to BBD for putting in a lot of graft to cover, an unsung hero tonight. Great shift.

However... Seriki still managed to get an assist and created chaos going forwards on a number of occasions.

Yet again, despite being targeted, despite some errors, he keeps going.
The lad has a lot of heart and a lot of talent.

I'd still stick with him.
The giving far too much room is down to the positional coaching.

You watch any game, when the ball is on the opposite flank, the full backs always tuck in and leave space on their side.

Bit unfair….totally different players.
Gilchrist is much more defensive, excellent positional sense and capable of playing as centre back.
Sereki’s positional sense is often appalling but like Kyle Walker his pace can get him out of trouble.

However going forward Sereki is on a totally different level to most players, never mind compared to Gilchrist.

Gilchrist is a solid/ steady defender with a great attitude, a big asset to any club in the Championship.
Where as Sereki has massive strengths and big weaknesses but his ceiling is really high, possibly even England international level.
Sereki is still young, if he sorts out his weakness and builds on his strengths he’s going to be one hell of a player.
Can see clubs like Man Utd putting in a big bid for him, hope we don’t accept a £20 million bid when he’s potentially the new Kyle Walker.

Defend the box is this season’s mantra. Presume they’re told to cover their centre half and worry about the winger when he actually threatens the penalty area?

but then he still had the confidence to do multiple runs....

That was a great sign, similar to his Hillsborough experience. Something has clicked for him mentally as well as physically.

Poor first 20 against Coventry then thought he grew into the game very well. First touch needs to improve I think we can all agree but his intensity and physicality are outstanding. Yes he's a bit of a rough diamond but he is a diamond. 👍

Similar to the Wednesday match.

In fact he was shockingly poor in the first 15 minutes then settled himself and got better and better. Which shows he must have a good mentality.

Some of his subs appearances this season have been so impressive having a major effect on the game.

It’s looking like we could have a new Kyle Walker on our hands, just hope we don’t accept the first £15 to £20 million offer because Sereki could go to the top.

I've been critical of him at times - he gets caught out by small things (ie getting caught under headers, sloppy first tough).

However - I/we need to remember he's a youngster, and not only that, he's a youngster coming into a team fighting for promotion in an intense battle.

Can't we stop comparing Gilchrist and Seriki.
Gilchrist is a central defender, he never has been nor will be an attacking wing/full back. Through necessity we have played him in a position that he is not really comfortable with and to be fair to him he has made a major contribution to our success this season.
Seriki on the other hand has all the attributes to make that position his for a long time, but you wouldn't dream about playing him as a central defender.

One thing I noticed watching the game back is the amount of defensive work BBD did with him, especially in the second half.

Bidwell and Mason Clark tried to over load Seriki but him and BBD shut it down every time.
It's a partnership that is really working and it makes the defenders job so much easier when he is being helped out in this way.
Helping out defensively is what is holding JRS back in his development.
Providing Seriki stays fit I can't see Wilder risking changing it.

It's a theme him starting games nervously. Peck and Seriki were both really nervous in the first 15 at the sty too. It's only natural and something they'll come through with time and experience. My favourite Femi moment Vs Cov was this sublime ball to Peck at 7:00 :

Then takes on his man and nearly scores in the next highlight. What a man.

I agree we need to stop comparing them (Mainly because there is no comparison)

But Gilchrist played 11 times for Chelsea last season - all at RB. We signed him to play RB - not CB.

I know Wilder likes inverted wingers, which can be a bit frustrating for a striker making runs. But Seriki is a more direct player going down the right, taking on defenders, driving into the box and ultimately getting crosses in, he is more like an orthodox winger…I love him to bits.

His profile on the Chelsea website describes him as a right footed central defender. As a kid he wanted to be the next John Terry. (He seems to be too nice to be a twat like him). And I think he played as a central defender for their u21.
To be fair most of his appearances last season was as a full back, but most of those were sub appearances for the last few minutes.
You only have to watch him play, he is not a modern day fullback that can get up and down the pitch. Chelsea are obviously trying to convert him and that was perhaps part of the loan deal.
I'm not knocking him as I quite like him as a player.
Would he be better in a back three, with someone like Seriki wide right. Just a thought.

Seriki is magnificent, he needs to improve his control and first touch, his first touch sometimes leads to him having to dive in to maintain control of the ball. This can lead to injuries for him, or yellow cards if the defender gets there a split second before him

Oddly enough though it was his lack of control that flummoxed the Coventry player leading to the cross from which Campbell scored

I dont see many of the negatives posted on here and elsewhere. I am not an expert but what I see is a pretty much all positive. I love this guy! This crop of U21s who have come through this season is just fantastic. Blaster, Peck, Brooks, Seriki, One (to a lesser extent) and Osula who we got big money for is just sensational!
