Selles Signings at his previous Clubs

Hopefully he wants to get a proper season with Louie Barry. He did well to get him last time, and was extremely unfortunate with the injury.

I'm one of the fans who wanted to see Wilder be given another crack at it next season. The owners have got shut and that's that. It's their shout. Like everyone else I'll get behind the team and the new guy... because there really isn't any alternative. I can't change what the owners have done, or might be planning to do. But... everything I've seen about Seles - his track record at other clubs, win rate, finishing position of the teams he's managed - just leaves me a bit bemused as to why on earth we've done this. Now I've just seen those transfers I feel even less sure about the guy (bar one or two exceptions e.g. Barry). I wasn't happy when it was rumoured that Wilder wanted McBurnie back (never want to see that useless lump anywhere near a Blades shirt again), but given where we stand as a club right now, this whole thing just feels like a step into the unknown when we didn't really need to take one. Time will tell and we'll see if the owners have picked a gem of a manager and whether they back him. Or whether they don't and Seles turns out to be the Spanish Sausage Rhol - lauded but a bit lame and working at (another) basket case club. I soooooo hope that my doubts and fears about this move are misplaced. UTB!!!

It's hard to judge his signings at other clubs when we don't know what his budget was. He might have wanted to shop at Waitrose but could only afford to shop at Heron Foods.

What are you basing that on? I'm not saying you're wrong.
In all honesty, nothing. All the signings by those clubs were domestic based & most of his experience has been premiership as an assistant or European. I just presumed (possibly wrongfully) that his player knowledge wouldn’t be here.

Similar to quite a lot of Premiership clubs the managers seem to coach and the recruitment team look after signings etc.

He won’t have a say on signings he’ll just get thrown a load of players and told to work with them
If we have clear design and style of play, I don't think this will matter, if it is true.

If he is saying "I need a new CB, they need to be X, Y, Z" if someone else then identifies that Joe Bloggs who plays for Hallam FC has amazing potential, ticks all the needs of the manager, does it matter who signed him?

The problem is if he is saying I need a CB, we aren't going to play with a number 9 this season and he gets bought a number 9...

You do often hear this but i never quite understand how it works. If the head coach only coaches who is driving the tactics, the formation, changing tactics for different scenarios and different teams ?

I'm guessing it is still the head coach but I would think its a damn site easier if he has a major input into the type of player he wants or needs for different roles rather than having a bunch of disparate players foisted upon him.

I think that his appointment only makes sense if this happens and that the next step will be to appoint a director of football.

British managers traditionally are all powerful and oversee both the scouting and coaching sides of the club. By splitting the roles you are trying to get a coach in place who is excellent at getting the best out of players, developmentally and tactically, and alloting the other half of the business to the best quality scouts, capable of identifying the best players for the positions that the club requires by utilising data and traditional scouting methods.

So whilst Wilder, as an example might be good at both these functions, by splitting the roles we get two men who collectively are better than the one. This system has become the chosen system for Premier League clubs and, I think, partially explains why there are so few English managers at the top level. Successful managers at the lower levels need to be good Jack of all Trades men rather than brilliant coaches.

It's interesting that Selles signed the guy from Monaco and talked about the good relationship he had with Monaco, their manager and style of play, that the player fitted the style he wants to play, and that players from teams like Monaco and the Red Bull group are interesting for him because they fit his style.
