Watched PNE vs Rochdale today, either of whom could be playoff opposition, so thought I'd post a few observations.

The most noticeable thing was the freedom with which Rochdale play. Their manager is under no pressure and he spent the game smiling and joking in between the usual managerial dealings. That's reflected in the team's play, which is pacey, positive and energetic. All they lacked was a finisher (sorry lads).

PNE meanwhile were pretty much what we've come to expect. Solid, strong, dangerous from set pieces, and in possession of genuine finishers in Beckford and Garner. What's new about them is the addition of Johnson - a quick footed, dreadlocked lad from Villa. He and Gallagher make them more of a ball playing outfit than we're used seeing from Grayson.

As for the game, the pressure was on PNE to win this, and they were rather fortunate to nick it. But once they got ahead, Rochdale couldn't sustain the energy and fell away until a last five minute all-or-nothing assault.

So far as United are concerned, both sides would seriously trouble us unless we can shake off the inhibitions which pressure brings, and dredge up some more energy for our sixty game season. Thankfully the odds are we won't face PNE, as they have most bases covered in their squad. However, Rochdale would be a very difficult proposition if they can maintain the fearless approach. If it were possible to transplant their frame of mind into our squad, we'd be onto a winner. That's Clough's biggest challenge.

Good assessments JD, sadly, I don't think it matters a jot as we won't be playing anyone in the play offs ( and not because we'll get auto :-)).
Apologies to our more optimistic brethren, I just can't shake this feeling off. Hope today gives me a kick up the arse I deserve!

I often look at Matty Done and wonder what he thinks he's come to at Bramall Lane. The description of the attitude and morale at Rochdale exemplifies Keith Hill's approach and the way he has achieved what he has there. Done was superhero there scoring goals for fun and no doubt enjoying the massive praise and encouragement of his manager and fellow players. When and if we get to the Play-Offs the team with belief and most confident and relaxed in what they are doing who will win through.

To be absolutely honest I wouldn't fancy our chances against Rochdale at Wembley - big pitch, busy well drilled team with players who know what they're doing and get up and down very well with speed and purpose.

I think it's all about how we play.

When we're playing well we can beat Bristol City away. When we're playing poorly, we can lose at home to Crewe.

The key question is not who we play, but whether we can find some form. If anything, we seem to play better against stronger opposition, which is why I still hold out some hope for the play-offs, despite us looking awful most of the time.

For the same reason, I actually feel a modicum of hope that we might get a result today. Let's see how that one works out...

If Clough fails and gets the boot at the end of the season would you say we should be looking at someone like Keith Hill?

No. United remains a big club and that brings pressure. Adams for example was like a startled rabbit even though he was an experienced manager and had been at Fulham.

I don't know if its just me , and no disrespect to any team in league 1 , but i just find it frustrating , when the team which could be our biggest challenge is a team called Rochdale .

I think the difference is between us and the others , is there management and board seem to have the right type of players to deal with the rigours of this league , and play as a unit ( even with smaller squads ) . Never mind if you are pro or anti Clough , we have missed a trick , under estimated the league , with the type of players needed , and forgot the basics of having a strong spine down the middle of the team. There is no god given right for us to be successful , but this season is / was a great opportunity to move this club forward .

Lets hope we do not throw the little chance we still have left away . Fans need success for once in a while .

Ask our Dingle friends how highly they rate Keith Hill.

Fair point. The name was familiar I just couldn't figure out where from.

The thing what annoys me about this season is that we haven't really got going. We have a few decent results and then when you think things are clicking we mess it up. Frustrating as hell at times.

Horses for courses I guess. He has done something quite special at Dale, and in his defence, Barnsley had been asking for relegation for a few years when he went there. I can see why they hired him.

Any manager who comes to United has to take the pressure off his players and inspire confidence at the same time. We represent a great opportunity and a managerial graveyard in equal measure.

Hey My Lord, those are the basics of any team, even Sheffield Bible Class League.

Woody agree , and that the biggest negative that can be aimed at Clough . In a perverse sort of way , you can take on board what he is trying to do . The bottom line though is you build a team to get you out of any division , even the Sheffield Bible Class League . Same for St Patricks FC as for SUFC.

Quite how Rochdale manage to compete at the upper end of League 1 is a feat in itself. They average less then 3,500 for home games so whatever Keith Hill is doing there is working. I was impressed when that played at the lane in September and classes us lucky to secure 3 points that day. They played with real freedom and a smile on their faces, something sadly lacking this season under Clough in games other than cup matches.

Success for Rochdale is keeping in this league . Ours is getting out of it ( upwards )

Henderson at Dale has now gone above Done in the League 1 goalscoring charts - doesn't that speak volumes about the chances created at Rochdale compared with SUFC.

 Absolute f**king volumes loud and f**king clear.

Good assessments JD, sadly, I don't think it matters a jot as we won't be playing anyone in the play offs ( and not because we'll get auto :)).

Have the same gut feeling

That's just how felt before today, which gave me the kick up the arse I needed.

If we "just go for it" in every match, I think we'll get promoted. I'm less convinced about us going for it in every match though. :)
