Just noticed on the Sky highlights.

Sander wins the ball in the air in our box and Fleck clears it out to halfway

Sander pursues the clearance and puts pressure on McNamara, who has to pass it sideways to Cresswell.

Fleck has already arrived in Cresswell's face and he fucks up a backwards pass.

Fleck outruns him to the ball - they are over halfway - they are the two that cleared the ball - and yet nobody else is in sight (see below)

Sander continues his run into their box to get on the end of Fleck's cross, rounds the keeper and scores.

Now that's what I call Box-to-Box players.

Flecks all round contribution yesterday has gone largely unrecognised in most quarters.

He hasn’t been at his best in recent months. I’ll put that down to a troublesome back issue initially when on Swettie dutie, rather than a lack of ability, cos the lad has it in spades.

Great to see him back to something like. More please .

Great post. I commented at the time about Sander actually winning a header, and at their first corner I commented that we never score from an opponent’s corner like Watford did last week (not surprisingly, nobody ever listens), but that analysis is a great spot. Great credit to Sander and Fleck, as well.

He also collapsed on the pitch last year. That must affect him and play on his mind that it could happen again.

Personally, I’m just happy to see him playing football.

Miscues a simple backpass, gets outpaced by little Johnnie, let’s the cross go through his legs, and then the guy on the line slid into the net with the ball.

At the moment Fleck certainly doesn’t have it in the tank for the full 90 he struggled after about 50/55 minutes against Millwall but I’d rather we get that out of him than a bad 90 managing his levels like against Watford. With 5 subs I’d rather he gives it everything and gases out rather than trying to see out the 90 and not impacting the game.

Fleck was good on Saturday but crap the previous game. He's so inconsistent hence Wilders Johnny or Jimmy analogy.

I think he has form for not starting seasons in erm the best shape and it’s always been explained as him being a slow starter but for someone who’s game is some much predicated on his engine I’d be shocked if it’s not a contributing factor to him not starting season strong.

He’ll likely be fine by October but in the meantime if he gives it everything and gases out that’s fine by me.

As I saw it, Berge was zone man for defensive corners. But, rather than take up a central position on the six yard box, he set up deeper. Almost a back post zone. It was from that set up he won the header, that ended with his goal.

I pay a lot of attention to zone men.

You mustn't criticise. When players play less well than in other games, it's exactly that. They play 'less well'. Criticising them on some dark corner of the internet hurts them badly and makes them play worse.

Fleck is 30, so not exactly old in modern footballer terms. Sharp, Basham and Mcgoldrick for example have had their most succesful periods of their career's post 30. I think Fleck's primary issue is that he hasn't had any serious competition for his shirt since he joined United 6 years ago. Hopefully Doyle is the man to push him.

They could be following instruction (in which case it's better to criticise the manager) or they could just be bad at decision making (in which case, criticise the manager for picking them in the first place - again, their decision making is probably better than 99% of ours).
4. The player wasn't trying hard enough. In my opinion, this is 100% fair game for criticism.

My point here is that many observers point out qualities in the player - 'he makes us tick', 'we are better with him in the team' based on scant evidence. We could say that with more weight about NDaiye and even recently Berge. The larger bank of justifiable observation is that his playing style and competency suggest his performance is predictable and easily countered. To that matter, and for me, he and they are living in the past, and we need to move on. He has shown he can't change his game too, yet still gets picked and we suffer because of that with misplaced balls and loss of possession

2. The player played worse than they normally do. The trouble with this is that Norwood's performances are the majority unspectacular and error prone. When Basham has a bad game (and he has) it is noteworthy. It is difficult at times to highlight when Norwood actually plays well, except for when oppositions actually allow him to. Lets put it this way: when was the last time you could honestly say Norwood won an individual midfield game against a tougher opposition CM and had him in his pocket?

This isn't quite so difficult to quantify with Norwood because he is so unidirectional and anchored into a system we used successfully four seasons ago. His decisions are made based on that and they don't work. And his choice of passing when he should run, or even passing full stop at times causes us to lose momentum and initiative. I doubt he is coached too to hit the first man from corners, miss penalties, hit the kop with a shot or over hit a cross. As for his selection in the first place ... that is HJ&SMcC's swim lane

You'll never find me criticising Norwood for not trying. The one thing he does do is graft, even if it is pointing, making yellow card tackles to foul a breaking player he's give the ball to or dropping deep to receive the ball from Egan to boot it long to a closed down wing back

I'm not quite sure where Berge is going to go with us. He has flashes of quality, usually when he's pushed up on the right but that's not really where we want him to make a contribution.he hides and goes MIA 75% of games. Norwood always wants the ball where Berge often makes no run. The strength/defensive side of his game is weak. He rarely busts a gut now like he did when we first signed him. His pressing in much worse than our OAP forward. Rarely puts anh heart into it.

Sure, when we have a lot of the ball on attack. He is great at getting to the byline and getting crosses in. But it's for 10 minute spells

He rarely looks for his next pass before the ball arrives and is slow in decision making, takes extra touched and slows us down.

Can't head, poor tacking, lazy tracking, doesn't put the work in. Poor in the press.

If we go up, he lacks all the qualities we need for counterattacks football and of we stay down what he does at this level for the team
