How can anyone expect a career defensive midfielder to just fill in seamlessly into Flecks position. Regardless of price... 🤔 😂

He didn’t. He played in Lunny’s position and Lunny moved over to the left. Then switched back to the right when Freeman came on.

What I mean is that how can we expect a very obvious defensive midfielder in Berge to fill into the positions of our more attacking/goalscoring midfielders and expect him to just do something he has never done before. For me if he is to play its either in Norwood's position (which he is not yet earned) or in a double pivot like he did for Genk.

I don't really understand why people feel the need to moan about people criticising Berge's performances.

I haven't seen anybody writing him off yet. Everybody accepts that he's young, in a new country, adapting to a new system of playing etc..
Not everybody feels the need to acknowledge his mitigating circumstances every time they post an opinion on his performances to date.

It's a football forum. We played yesterday. Fans are going to say what they see...

Berge is class. Even on a poor day he is very hard to knock off the ball and very effective in defence at corners. Him and McB were a good part of the reason that we didn’t concede from all those corners that Villa had.

He will develop into a higher class Kevin McD or Tom Huddlestone.

At Berge’s age Norwood was playing for Udders in the Champ. Over the next 2 years Sander will progressively learn and take over from Ollie as Chris builds a next level team and a next level club. We are in the game of building for the future - not just squeezing the pips out of the present.

I’ve been coming for nearly 50 years and I find it hard to get used to as well.

Magic Days

Aren’t we lucky to have so many football experts on here? First match back, they’re picking holes in players who’ve not had a match in three months.
Put your medals on the table lads...

Most people haven’t been at work for 3 months but would still be expected to perform to a good standard upon return. Your case stands up like a red hot Mars bar. End of day, wank performance. Expect people to call it how it is.

That’s me put in my place by a pretty obvious....er....expert

So the Timo Werner package is reportedly is £102 million over 5 years..............Wow

So is he going to be equal to 5 S Berge's or 5 O McBurnie's? I think not.

If Werner scores 20 league goals next season I will raffle my dog collar!

In fairness, if he bags 20-25 goals in his first season his output will be equal to 5 x McBurnie's in goals alone.

Would a 30 yard thunder bolt into the top corner shut everybody up about Berge. God I hope he does ont Sunday.

It's not Sander Berge I have the problem with, it's the role he's being expected to play

Berge is a big 6"5 defensive midfielder who's made a decent career so far out of breaking up plays and screening the back line.

He's not fast, mainly due to his size. He's not really that creative either because that simply isn't his game.

He's a player that does the basics well and can cover in CB if needed. Plenty of potential at 22 though.

Let me get this straight.

Some people think Wilder is forcing himself to play Sander because of how much he cost? While we’re fighting for the chance to play in the Champions League and change the club forever? You really think he’d sacrifice that to prove a point he doesn’t believe in?

Ok...

What you've just wrote makes absolutely no.sense

How do you know what Wilder believes in? Or what his instructions to individual players are. Speculation is merely that. Unless he consults with you prior to each game of course.
Wrong person pal........Have another look.

I think there’s a great player there. He’s got great balance, plays a good pass and will only get better once he’s 100% settled. It’s a new system, one he’s not played in before. It will take some time, I think we need to give the lad some space and let him get on with it. Chris and Alan will have done their due diligence before signing him. I don’t think he’s lazy, good players sometimes appear lazy but I think it’s because of their talent. Loved watching Paul Scholes, Stuart McCall, Gary Speed, appeared that they had tons of time on the ball, made the hard things look easy. I’m not saying Sanders on that level yet but he’s got the potential. Let’s encourage the lad, he looks like he enjoys being here.

Lots of people obviously needing the usual whipping boy...up until start of this season Lundstrum had it sewn up...hes now in the clear..unless he doesn't sign a new contract. Which leaves a 2 horse race..Berge or McBurnie? Over 40m for the pair, both CW signings..cant see him squandering that much without him being confident they'll deliver what he wants.
Ffs..top 6, real chance of Europe for first time in 45 years & a real chance of another FA Cup semi just 90 mins away. Do some people not realise or accept just how good things are at the moment? Ride & enjoy, we've all been through the league 1 shit etc, plus the current covid crap.
Lots in life we could really get down about..
Chrissy Wilder's SUFC isn't one of them. UTB

The issue is he’s currently playing at mid table championship standard. That’s where the critics are coming from. Yes it’s a new country / new style new everything.

I understand that but you also have to accept his level of performance is as such. Yes he will undoubtably improve but to what level remains to be seen. We all hope it’s to be a wonder kid. It would be a remarkable improvement as so far I’ve not seen any standout traits he has apart from his size and he lost headers to Grealish on Wednesday. I will be surpised if he keeps his place but hoping he turns it around.

Might be expected to perform to a good standard, but will they actually?
Have you seen how people are driving because they haven’t been out much for three months?
Or is it just round here?

I admire the positivity, it's a refreshing change to some who are way too negative in here.

But Champions League/Europa League football will have little to no impact on yourselves as a club, if it's simply just for one season.
There needs to be the intention/ambition to get European football over a number of seasons to be able to make the extra financial income account for anything.

It was not that long ago Burnley had a great season which resulted in European qualification, but their transfer policy remained the same, simply for two reasons.

1 - The financial rewards for European Football are really not that significant for English clubs compared to foreign sides, simply because of the huge financial rewards we get from being in the Premier League.

2 - There's no proof to players that you're trying to beat the likes of West Ham/Everton too, that you're actually a better proposition over a 3/4/5 year contract.

In short, this season has been terrific.
But after that 38th game is played, the hard work of the next stage begins, and is why the 'second season syndrome' phrase exists. Next season Sheffield United are no longer the disregarded, disrespected and overlooked side that they were this. There is also an increased expectation for yourselves, especially compared to the 3 promoted sides....But also in contrast with this season, there is much less momentum than these newly promoted sides.

That is why in this league Recruitment is vital, it's the way you retain/gain momentum from season to season. Signings that make a positive impact are the only way to progress.
(Of course promoting good youth players fits into this 'new signing' category....But obviously the pool of players around the world is far greater than those in a youth system).

Second season syndrome kicks in when teams like us change our fantastic transfer policy.

We got 6th in the premier league with home grown british players. Then teams go fancy and sign foriegn players who are hit and miss then it ruins the balance of the team. Players start to want the same as the foriegn boys hence second season can kick in.

So we all want to prey Berge starts to perform.

Brexit means Brexit and all that.

Second season syndrome kicks in when sides do not adapt, after a successful first season and believe that just 'doing what we're doing' which has brought you success so far, is the answer to everything.
6th in the Premier League during your first season is great......
But didn't Reading get 8th and were relegated the following season?

This 'fantastic' transfer policy....I'm not convinced i'm afraid, has recruitment alone really been anymore successful than Villa's?

I'd argue you're significantly above Villa in the table because you have a far better manager, with a far better understanding of what he wants from his team, how he wants to setup and how to maximize what he has from the players available.
E.g. Wesley has been considered a poor signing....But still has as many goals in a poor Villa side as the Blades top scorer.

If you believe this season to be your peak, then the attitude you have is probably correct.
But only signing 'home grown British players' will simply make you the next Burnley, rather than Leicester/Wolves.
