Sander Berge

Tuesday morning pre-Coffee thought - I wonder if we might see him in the middle of the defence tomorrow...

Circumstances mean we have no choice but to be creative
Egan is out
Jags potentially injured - If so, we don't have anyone left ideally to slot into that role, Bash is our only first team defender left and I wouldn't fancy him in the centre. Leaves you with Jack Rodwell (shudder), Jack Robinson in the middle and moving Enda inside to LCB (Robinson is a full back by trade, so not for me) or bringing someone, I don't know who, from the youth team.

No option is ideal, But Sander is 6'4, good defensively, good reader of the game, good aerially as we've seen from him defending set pieces and no slouch. He's played CDM all his career and we've often seen with the top teams CDM's slotting into centre half this and last season after injury crisis' (Fernandinho, Fabinho, Rodri) so it's not revolutionary. I'd quite like to see it. We might just stumble onto an incredible solution to the problem we've found by total accident.
I honestly really want to see him in that norwood role. That's the position he's played in and is his preferred role in a team. If you look at the pool game (in which he dominated) he was in this postition.

Me too, but this is a situation when we might have a chance to experiment and find we don't need to replace Jags next season as we have someone who can cover Egan in that role, or even better him

I'm sure I've read somewhere he has played at CB before.. definitely agree with the experiment comment, but I think we should experiment him in his natural role, FMBlade1 mentioned that he thinks Norwood has "dropped in confidence since the arrival of Berge" but that's a Norwood problem, and by Wilders own logic, if he's dropped in form, he needs to be given a rest on the sidelines.

I don't see why that'd make Norwood drop in confidence and to be honest I think that's bollocks. He's not played a PL min in Norwood's role since coming in

I love seeing CDM's play CB. it's interesting to see them take to the role. Fernandinho, Rodri and Fabinho have all excelled in it at one time or another (for obviously much better sides than us, but we play a different system entirely)

Likewise.. though I can see where he's coming from. A talent in Berge (yes, he's had a shitty start since being here, but he's evidently got talent) coming into the team would put me off my game if I knew that he plays in my role usually. CDMs taking the role seem to be a bit more... Attack minded, so it'd definitely be interesting to see. Though I'd be happy seeing him in his usual role haha

A “Sander Berge is crap” thread is like a rights of passage for any new or underperforming player at BDTBL. Even though we pat ourselves on a the back for being wonderful supporters. It’s doesn’t take long for the vultures to start circling when a players form drops off a cliff.

Called mate

This must be a wind up. You called me mate first... and told me to watch my blood pressure!

Why am I attention seeking as for stirring the shit this is why it can never work and it works abroad is because they don't have the millions to spend so they have to work at it and develop just look at Middlesbrough they spent the Millions look at them now maybe they would have been better developing be carful what you wish for but once you get into the premier league clubs take the eye off the ball Bolton is another example Sunderland a massive club another

Yes that was pretty much his game in Belgium and he was superb at it.

I've just watched Sander's highlights again (obviously not from here) and we NEED to play him deeper.
His game seems to be interceptions, winning the ball back and the odd Bash-esque burst through the middle.

Did you see much of him?
Could he do the Norwood role in games when we will be having less possession?

When he did that on Sunday, and he did quite a few times despite what some have said on here, that was when he looked good.

Admittedly I've usually had a few pints but I don't remember a single "Bash-esque burst through the middle" in the 7 games he's played for us.

I'm not going to slate him and I desperately want him to be brilliant, but he has a worrying lack of "burst" for me, so it seems odd to suggest that's been his strength.

[/QUOTEdo not disagree but he needs to be more central and deeper. Would love to know what the thinking was on buying him....in terms of surely the intention was to buy him and play him in his favoured position.

That's because he isn't playing that role in the middle. I think it's clear he has been asked to do something different for us. We should see what CWAK have in store for him next season. When we bought him I assumed he'd be taking the Norwood role. But obvioulsy he's a different kind of player to Norwood.

No he did, you're absolutely right.
He never goes to ground to win the ball back either which is a good indicator of how well he reads the game.
His passing and distribution has been poor so far, theres no getting around that but hes a young lad and this big move for him (and it is) maybe nerves and pressure are taking their toll and maybe he's trying to do more because of the big price tag.

No more than anyone else really. I follow a few european podcasts and he was always talked about favourably and very highly regarded. Not just by journalists but football people as well.

You make a good point about using him when we'll be having less possesion.

Clue forum

Hopefully he has a stormer tonight, should suit him as the game is likely to be played at a slow pace in sizzling heat.
