If we can get him now though, he might push us into a Europa League spot - then the extra prize money form 7th to 6th pays for him on it's own.

It would be an interesting development especially as the sovereign wealth fund are rumored to be looking at Newcastle.

You have to take these types of opportunities as and when they arise. If that means we have to re-order your priorities and wait until the Summer for a forward or another central defender then so be it. In short, this type of deal doesn't often make itself available to the likes of us, so you need to be decisive or miss out.
 
I’ve lost track as well as the will to re read this thread !! Are we in with a shout or has he definitely gone to Man Utd ?

Like all of us i'm sure desperate for this to happen he looks class. I also love a Norwegian at the Lane. Thought I'd go down memory Lane now! When I were young, back in the early 90's I was used to an entire English eleven and Jock Bryson provided a bit of foreign flair!

Then all of a sudden we signed two Norwegians! Jostein Flo (pronounced "Flu" according to John Motson) and Roger Nilsen. I missed out on the likes of Len De Goey and Alex Sabella so this was totally new for me! If honest, I didn't think either was that great, although in hindsight I was harsh on Flo at the time.

But then a few years later of course we signed Jan Aage Fjortoft! Built like Jack O'Connell but with the skill of Vas Borbokis, he truly was a gifted player. I really feel sorry for United fans not old enough to have witnessed his talents in a Blades shirt. Skip to 6 minutes on this video. Arguably the funniest goal, the second, I've ever witnessed!



I'd love another Norwegian, although special mention to Jonas Wirmola also, albeit Swedish!

This is the official latest provided by the Belgian media this morning.
Seems we are still in negotiations, they want a bit more money and a sell on clause. Also they’d prefer to sell him with an immediate loan back because they are currently struggling....can’t win the league and even struggling to make the Europa Cup this season. If we loan him back they’ll reduce the asking price. In the Summer 2030 he would be entering year his final year of his contract anyway. So 17-20 million is actually a high price so someone with not much contract left.

Suspect our transfer offer to Genk and salary offer to Berge will be very creative, initially low but with all sorts of bonuses and incentives thrown in.

The Belgian report...translated from Flemish to English says

Sander Berge considers transfer to Sheffield United with his family

There is a realistic chance that Sander Berge (21) RC Genk will leave this week. Sheffield United have made a concrete offer and if it raises its bid of 20 million euros and agrees to a percentage on a subsequent resale for Genk, a departure is possible. If he leaves this week then RC Genk might even break Youri Tielemans' Belgian transfer record of 25 million euros.

The preferred/ ideal scenario for Genk, is that Berge will remain as their player until next summer and not, as Pozuelo leaves early last year. In view of the European Championships – if Norway gets through the play-offs– it is also better for the player to be playing regular football. If Sheffield wish to sign him but loan him back until June, the transfer price would become slightly lower.

All parties are now taking a moment to consider the options. Berge's family has already travelled to Belgium to discuss his future.
