According to James Shield of The Star we are currently monitoring the young Mansfield player Sam Clucus who describes himself as a second striker / midfielder.

Clucus scored 4 goals in Mansfields demolition of St Albans in The FA Cup at the weekend and with his 5 leagues has scored 9 in total for the campaign so far.

The lad was released by Leicester as a youth and had just about given up on football returning back to college and working at Debenhams however Craig Fagan then of Lincoln town put him in touch with Glenn Hoddle who gave him a route back into football through his development academy out in Spain, since then he has apparently come on leaps and bounds and sources at Mansfield believe he is well a truely destined to be a solid championship player.

I was there and Mansfield (including Clucus) were awful for 70 minutes. I wouldn't take too much notice of what he did in the 20 minutes at the end either, St Albans had gone by then. However, I can't comment on any other games he's played in.

It is believed Mansfield have rejected a bid from a unnamed league 1 club. I know there were speculation we were interested in him last year. Any thoughts?

Is this the point again where we roll out the obvious pun that he will only sign if he can bring his entourage with him as he's nothing without his mates in their hoodies.

I'm sure if it was us that bid for him he'd have been half way up the motorway before the club could put the phone down.

Signing for Chesterfield shortly.

Don't normally do player suggestions but what do people think of Sam Clucas as a possible signing? He's left-footed, can play in the Duffy role and in centre mid, presumably could cover Fleck and also offer competition for both Fleck and Duffy. He's had success in the premier league and at 38 still has plenty to offer.

His background coming through the non-league scene also might appeal to Wilder like he's said with Duffy from Prescot Cables!

Wouldn't cost the earth - relative to the premier league.

Shall we just wait, see what gaffer wants.

Good Pele, No. We are now able to set our sights a little higher, I would hope. You don’t survive in the Premiership on Sam Clucas.

Paul Mitchell influenced signing for Chessy when a Mansfield Town player.
You never know, Stoke will be cutting the wage bill this summer, as next season will be the last of the parachute payments.

Think Luke Freeman is much more likely.

I think this is a good shout and it wouldn't surprise me at all. Useful versatile player. Seemed to do fairly well for Swansea.

It was only a suggestion, and not for Widler mind, he'll do what he wants, irrespective of anything on here!

Really....I heard Paul Mitchell bases all his scouting and player suggestions to CW from the S2 4SU experts....

Allow me to elaborate a little Pinchy. We're not likely to be able to spend £50m this summer, so some of the recruitment will have to be outside of the box - like David McGoldrick was and look how that turned out. Now I'm not suggesting that we sign a player released on a free by Ipswich either. We certainly need two forwards in my view, and I reckon they could set us back the most in our budget. Sam Clucas can play in centre mid and in the Duffy role, and like Fleck he's left footed. He did really well at Hull and Swansea in the Premier League. Ok, its not worked out at Stoke, but again, look how McGoldrick did for Ipswich last season as an example of a player who has gone onto excel with Tuftyball!

I'm not saying Clucas should be the first choice or that he's the best player we could sign in his position, but this isn't Wolves here with a bottomless pit of money and we can't afford to spend £10-15m per player to stay up and Clucas is a decent player who has done well in his previous time in the Prem.

I felt I needed to state the obvious since it seemed the other poster took exception to my suggestion but that's the point of player suggestion!

It's a decent shout tbf, especially with the Paul Mitchell link at Chezzie.

I would think he'll be on a decent wage after going from Hull /Swansea/Stoke, but looking at his playing stats it looks like he's been relegated twice from the Prem in the first year of both teams - hope you're not superstitious !
