Really sad news. I went to his debut in 1978 against Leyton Orient. Hot sunny day, t-shirts and scarves, the anticipation of a new season and a new exciting Argentinian import made it special.

We lost 2-1. 😂😂

Saw him a few times after that, and he was a superb player. Not sure the mud of BDTBL suited him, or the quality of his teammates. I remember a game at the end of the season, midweek when we played Blackburn at home, and lost 2-1 at home again. He looked despondent at that game.

I remember the Jesus saves badges too.

RIP Alex and thanks for the memories.

R. I. P Alex.
What a player.
I remember watching him in an evening away game at Leicester - I think it was the second game of the season 1978.
City had obviously heard about our new star player and they detailed Tommy Williams to man mark him. Poor lad.
Alex made him look like a lost school boy!
He dribbled by him for the umpteenth time and laid the winner (1-0) on a plate.
I forget who tapped it in. Silent Blade?
On his day he was a helluva player.

Shocking news. After being obsessed with the 78 World Cup, I thought when he came to the Lane, he was the coolest player I'd ever seen.
Even if you take away the skill(which he had in abundance)he made kids like me think that playing with your football socks round your ankles was the greatest thing ever!
Adiós Alex...

Awful news awful year. Sabella was my first footballing hero at 7 years old. Socks rolled down gliding past players as if they weren’t there. As others have said on an absolute different planet to the other blades players in the team.

As per the badge that donned my coat at the time. VIVA SABELLA

Hot on the heels of Maradona, the greatest Blades player that never was.
I remember seeing him terrorise Doncaster Rovers at the Lane in 78. Best them 6:0 or something.... although I may have misremembered that being only little at the time. Cheers 2020, you continue to be an absolute clusterfuck.

What a bleeding crap year this has been!

What can I say. Alex was one of the most entertaining players I’ve seen in the mighty red and white. I started taking my oldest lad to some games the season Alex arrived. I bought him an ‘Alex Sabella walks on water’ badge and it was so big it covered half his chest. He’s still got it.

A nice bloke, smashing little player and a world class manager.

RIP Alex.

RIP Star, what a player and what a character, I remember as a kid going up to Phil‘s who’s dad was caretaker of the old training ground on the Ball inn field, Myrtle road. The changing room was up the stairs and we were all having some good banter with Sabella and as he went up the stairs he pulled a moony at us, not politically correct now days but it was well funny at the time, I remember it like it was yesterday. He was always very funny to us kids with the accent, always made a fuss of us and we used to love going up to Phil‘s as you got to watch the players train, also I remember a few of us being Stood on myrtle road on training days and waiting for the footballs getting booted over the fence and we would nick em and go on Heeley Bank School field or the city surveyors field for a game of footie, using our nice new Blades training ball, they were far better than the 99p blow away balls we had, they were leather casies lol great memories.
Rip Alex Sabella and thanks for the great memories pal...... A real gent..
