Ron Martin: "I had a meeting with Ryan on Saturday morning and, after our talk, he chose not to put in a transfer request."

8:06 pm - 16 Jul 2017

I have no idea where that leaves the situation, or whether Len had a change of heart and did put one in. Nothing's easy here is it?

It's all becoming too much. I'd like Leonard to come as for me, he's one of the more well rounded midfielders in the Football League but has better defensive traits than Coutts and Fleck, which could allow them the license to be more free with ball like last season.

However with us also going in for Lundstrum it's hard to decide which one I'd prefer here. The latter a more classy player on the ball, a lot like Coutts but slightly more defensive and younger than Leonard. Or your Lenny who is a lot more defensive than any of our current midfielders and is a very dynamic and complete player imo.

They're both leaders, seem like good eggs and have both had very strong campaigns. You'll have to leave me to decide for a day or two.

But he still didn't feature in the friendly? Bizarre.

Phil Brown surprises me in all this. He's been around long enough to know the score and be advising ego Ron on all this.

It's becoming increasingly clear that RugRon is a fucking idiot. First they offer a generous contract: Lenny turns it down. Then Lenny asks for a transfer but withdraws the request immediately, no doubt when RugRon says he will be allowed to leave at the right price. Lenny still misses the game. It's Maguire all over.

He's gone Ron, Ron, Ron. He's gone Ron Ron.

Too late by then. We'll have moved on to option 3 and this thread will be on page 675.

I very much hope you're right mate.

I'm not convinced about Carruthers tbh. My gut instinct tells me he's a bit of a twat?

he might be a twat, that remains to be seen - go and watch his movement and instant pass to create Flecks goal v Malaga.

The kid has quality - I expect him to start instead of Duffy in that advanced midfield role.

I've totally lost the plot on this lot. Hopefully tomorrow there will be more definite information on what is happening. I just don't understand why Phil says one thing on Saturday afternoon and then Ron says something different on Sunday evening.

Was gonna mention the same thing....was a couple of lovely little passes that opened up Malaga...we haven't seen the best of this lad yet.

Never mind mate, you keep getting your predictions wrong so you might as well continue your run with this latest one. I would think the earliest you will see him at Bramall Lane is next season when he turns out for Southend in the Championship fixture against you. That way you could form an opinion on him as a player and wave to Ron in your Directors box, result eh?

Hope it's not a windy day, Rons hair might wave back :)

Haha fuck this guy.
Stay in league 1 then.
Move on.

The whole saga is embarrassing. Clearly the player wants to leave and whilst its understandable that your chairman wants to keep his best players he needs to understand that at some point players progress more than a club does - especially when they've been there doing well for a few seasons. Surely all it takes is for your chairman to say to our representative how much he wants and then we can decide if we want to bid that or not. I doubt that conversation has took place because he just keeps knocking bids back and then Leonard thinks that a move will never happen. It won't help Southend when it comes to recruitment if players think the chairman won't let them move on. Clubs like Southend, and Us to be fair, are always going to be selling clubs! Who isn't!?

Its not doing anyone any favours here and Ron needs to understand that he's not the chairman of Wigan who can boast to a decent shout of promotion.

But we don't know the difference between the starting bid and the final (?) bid yet do we?
Big Ron may have realised that a move was inevitable early on and has just been helping to raise the final price.

Southends chairman should take a leaf out McCabes book of selling proverbs................."you cant stand in a players way when the Championship comes calling"..............Murphy + Maguire.

Agree if he's as good as he thinks add a sell-on clause, worked for us.

Rumour from Southend is that Blades, agent and player were told the valuation was £500k. That offer was made, Ron then decided he wanted more and turned it down which triggered the transfer request, which might or might not be still in.

I'm only teasing mate. He's definitely got talent and at times last season I thought he was amazing. But I also think he was poor in equal measure.

I think Wilder made a lot of him not having had a pre-season with us. Which, tbh, I didn't fully buy into because the bloke had a pre season elsewhere and had been playing regularly.

This season..no such excuses. He's either going to be a big star for us or he's going to continue to be an enigma like last season. And right now I think it's the latter. Hope he will prove me wrong.

Our chairman always insists on a sell on for players. We have made plenty of money this way.

We have allowed players to leave. Dan Bentley left us to Brentford after they met our asking price of 1 million. Jack Payne left for around 500k. We have also sold loads of our youth to big clubs with big sell ons. If think the latter is what will make us big money.

I'm not sure what happens now with regards to Leonard. It's all becoming a bit ridiculous. If he is unhappy then we should sell. I am however glad that the club are doing everything possible to keep hold of a very very good player.

I guess this will play out over the coming weeks.

We have another friendly Tuesday night and let's see if Lenny plays.

That's the thing about rumours, often they are not true however much some want them to be.

Maybe we should have a poll.
I'll vote that we'll sign him before 100 pages.

This does demonstrate the fiasco when chasing transfer targets
That's why Wilder usually keeps everything under wraps until the deal has been announced.
The Leonard and Holmes transfer targets should have never been made public.

All this for a guy who probably isn't going to start for the first game of the season.

Clearly Coutts and Fleck quite rightly will start with the shirt.

I can only think Leonard gets in over Duffy in games where we need to be more robust.

Going to be hard for him to nail a spot. It would need to be in lieu of Coutts or Fleck as Leonard for Duffy is more of a tactical switch than one for one.

I don't know mate, I've not seen this lad Leonard play. Well, not true actually, I've seen him once I think, but I don't know enough about him to be able to say he'll be ahead or behind what we already have. I agree with you that it will be hard to shift Coutts and Fleck, but there's still 9 other places up for grabs, 8 if he doesn't fancy being goalie.

Read all about it!

What I don't understand in all of this is why, with all the media circus that is going on here, Wilder keeps upping his bids for Len. I mean he's only an FL1 player that will be a squad member at best, very strange.

This is turning into a bigger bloody farce than the Ricky Holmes saga. Leonard allegedly puts a transfer request in a few days ago and now takes it out again! What does he think he's doing? Playing Hokey Cokey?

He expects to stay, he wants to leave, he doesn't want to leave.

Would he like to go 50/50, ask the audience or phone a friend maybe?

All this seems to revolve around the supposition that because Southend United did well last season in finishing in the top 10, this coming season will be one where they seriously challenge for promotion. I don't know the comings and goings on down at Southend this summer, maybe one of our Shrimpy mates on here will tell us? but what sort of conviction has been shown by the club in the transfer market thus far? (Apart from clinging like a barnacle to Leonard)?

Have Southend gone out there and started signing up some real quality players to give the club that push into the top 6 or top 2? If you were Leonard, would you be looking at the business the club is doing and thinking..."this is great, they are making some fantastic signings and we're really going to have a great chance of promotion this coming season!" Because that's what he should be basing his decision on - nothing else.

If he wants to play at a higher level of football then it really comes down to..."do I want it now?" or "am I prepared to wait and see if the chance comes with Southend United?"

I've a feeling I know how this is going to end. Leonard stays - Southend United are not looking like promotion contenders in Jan - Leonard leaves for less money than is on the table now.

Bad for Leonard and bad for Southend United ultimately.
