Club sources are saying that he is not a replacement. Mr Brown is still looking to strengthen the squad in central midfield according to his latest interview today. I may yet get to see Lenny and Kightly playing together......................
Whar ever good luck roots, enjoyed your contribution this last few weeks

Hey.

Though id pop back. The main talking point our end is obviously Kightly signing which is a cracking signing at our level. Michael turner is about to sign too which again is great. We are building an old boys 11.

The side note is that Ryan Leonard has been met with by both the chairman and the manager and a 3 to 4 year deal is on the table with the offer to more the double his wages. Not sure how much that equated to. Maybe around 3-4k pw. I also think that we are building a squad more than capable of challenging the top 2 this season. If and it's a big if we can get promoted I'm sure Ryan will sign. If we don't or we are nowhere near in January we will reluctantly have to sell if Ryan wants to leave.

For now it would appear that Ryan is going nowhere. Of course should someone offer the 600-700k asking price then that might change.

Fwiw I think we will hold on to Ryan for this season and beyond.

Leonard is trying to push his way out. The signings of Kightly and Turner would seem good for league one. I don't see Southend anywhere near the top 2 this season. Bury/Charlton have recruited far better already.

If we do not get him now we will get him in January. Our wage structure was big for league one, so wages shouldn't be an issue.

Your chairman is playing hardball (which I think all our fans deep down quite admire).

The lure of championship football, 30k stadium, 23K+ fans and more wages will be a big enough pull.

Your right with all of the above.

But your missing the vital point. We don't want to sell and don't need to sell. Unless you pay the fee which will enable that to happen it won't happen. Leonard is our player and will be for the next year.

It's quite a simple solution. You want him for 350k that's never going to happen. You will need to pay double that.

You negotiating or summert? If so.........

I'm flouncing out......... :p

For me if that's the deal I am out. 700k for a 26 year old who has never played above the first is too rich for me, same as Ricky Holmes. There just isn't enough upside in those deals. In respect to Leonard I would rather keep the money and play Bash there as and when needed.

Personally outside of our midfield last season the stand out midfielder for me was Josh Vela at Bolton and that's where I would be investing. Yes he won't be cheaper than both these guys put together but the upside is there for all to see.

To be fair, we don't actually need Lenny either as we already have Coutts, Fleck, Duffy, Carruthers and now Brooks so it's not as if we need to overpay for him at all

It's not a case of overpaying. He is player of the season 3 times. He is a class act and is only 25 with possibly another 8 good seasons ahead of him. 700k is a good price for a player in that mould.

I understand that you feel it's a lot with a year on a contract, but dack went for 750k to a fellow league 1 side who are a smaller club, and that being after a terrible season with gillingham.

You are a big club in the championship now, as you have pointed out. 700k should be peanuts.

Im guessing we won't budge on the offer. If so, then Wilder may wait it out till Jan. If Leonard doesn't sign the new contract then we go in with the same offer and with his contract running out they may then sell him for some cash.

It sounds like you're putting together a decent team, fancy you and Bury to be up there this year.

If a player is valued at 500k to Wilder why would he pay let's say a million? He might think that he could get a better player for a million quid. My only concern is that he might undervalue some targets and miss out. We've tried to be extremely competitive in recent years and our wage bills since falling from grace were quite high and it got us absolutely nowhere. Lets say we paid 500k for Ched and Wednesday paid £10 mil for Rhodes do you genuinely believe the £9.5 million difference in price is value for money? Now take wages in to consideration and you're looking at a hell of a lot more than £9.5 mil

Wishful thinking founded on all the "ifs" going your way I'm afraid. The deal will be staying on the table. The lad wants to join, sorry to say this, a far bigger club. There really is no comparison.

Shrimpy Shrimpness.

No. You're missing three vital points.

Firstly the lad wants to go. In fact he specifically wants to join the Blades. In the modern game that matters quite a lot. Wait for the transfer request.

Secondly, your chairman wears a ludicrous syrup.

Thirdly, your manager is orange.

The last two make it difficult to take you seriously.

You are one seriously childish motherfucker, aren't you?

Might disagree with you on that. You can only spend 65% of your income on wages. So unless you have a benefactor putting loads of money in (that is donating not lending) you wage bill based on your income can be no more than about £3.5 million a year without player sales. That works out to about £2.5k on average per player per week. You last accounts show this amount on wages gives you a £1.4m trading loss. If you are going to put your wages up, the income has to come from somewhere. Those signings have put the wages up, don't think you can afford to double his wages unless you have found a donor.

Ron Martin's got a few quid and fingers in many pies.

I've not seen any mention from the player that he wants to go.

Not really liking some of the "bigger club" or similar comments from our supporters either. The Southend fans must think we are a right set of c**ts, leave that to our neighbours.

Laughed at that one. Not heard syrup in a while

Maybe, but true I would say. He was player of the season in a team that failed to make the playoffs in a poor league.
So that's Holmes out of the picture too.

Who was player of the season at MK?

Don't say we've signed two of theirs that couldn't even get player of the season from a team that failed to make the play offs in a poor league.

Hence the reason we haven't signed them yet. If they were £700k or £1 million pound players we'd have paid that already. Baldock and Carruthers will have been bought for what they are worth.

Thing is with Leonard, I don't think he's going to be first choice so why would Wilder pay £700k?

Completely agree. Wilder will be armed with a whole series of facts and info, so he'll know who's worth what and whether it's worth pushing the envelope that bit further.
As has been said elsewhere, who else is chomping at the bit to sign Leonard? So it's not as if we're in some type of auction, is it? What is becoming the single most over-used phrase on this forum, "Trust in Wilder". I bet his ratio of successes is far higher than the players we miss out on. CW is, of course, the key for many players. Once they meet him it's almost a predictable answer when he asks if they want to come here. Says volumes about the man and what he inspires in his players.

So didn't we do well with Adams and DCL, couldn't even get a game in a piss poor league one side never mind win player of the season.

And people say we sell too cheap.
