No that only applies to clubs whose initials are SUFC.:D
And the buying club makes a decent offer. We don't let players we don't want to sell go for £500k, we didn't when we were in L1 so why should Southend?

Do you think he's capable of scoring regularly from midfield, if given a box to box role?

Yes. But he is an amazing athlete. So strong and incredibly quick. Some of his tracking back and last ditch tackles are out of hand. He has the ability to score regularly if pushed forward. He also has screamers in his locker.

Would be a great option for your club if the move goes through. Will be a huge loss to us.

Unless you're his agent I want him up here mid Auld Lang Syne!

Can he play right wing back?

I think it was always in CW plans to go back in for him this Jaunary irrespective of Coutts injury. Though I think Coutts injury has crystallised the issue and I think Wilder will want to move quickly on this one.

Southend won't get the same money they wanted in thr summer (£750k) nor do I think they will.have their pants pulled down as despite him being out of contract in the summer they will hold him to the last 6 months and have 6 more months of his services rather than let him go for a pittance. They also know Utd could do with midfield reinforcements so that is a another thing they have in their favour.

The good thing frim Utd's perspective is that 1) CW is clearly trying to move quickly and get early January business completed, 2) weve had even more time to scout him out and be comfortable that he's the right man for us, 3) he's only got 6 months left and can talk to clubs anyway if he wants from January, and 4) Utd have clearly settled very well in the championship and there is no risk for Leonard in that he could join us and we would struggle (which was possibility in the summer).

I'd expect fairly quick negotiations and it all to be settled in early January. CW likes to do early busines. Price ? Who knows...id say perhaps £450k might get it done?

Offer them £750k and get the deal done.

Can't be certain there chairmen will play ball ,they had two players who were out of contract last summer Bentley goalie was one the other a midfielder who went to Huddersfield. Both players would have commanded decent fees ,they got nothing as they went on frees.
Whether the chairman is bloody minded or not he seems to be a strong character.Really taking that attitude will not help Southend in the long run as to keep players against there wishes is unfair when a player is bettering himself,we shall see.

But you’re not allowed to keep players when the big dogs come calling.

Can he play right wing back?

I'm sure he can. He used to play on the right wing, and also right back apparently. Add to that his fitness and decent ability on the ball and I don't think it'd be any problem for him.

Don't be surprised if our struggles at RWB have prompted this latest bid for him almost as much as the loss of Coutts has.

Agreed. Messing about trying to get players in at rock bottom prices hasn’t worked so far and is unlikely to in the JTW. Plus we need to do our business early and don’t want to be leaving it until the last minute, hoping teams lower their demands and missing out when they don’t.

Daniel Bentley went to Brentford and Jackie Payne to Huddersfield. Huddersfield coughed up approx. £450k and Bentley's fee was decided by tribunal. It is believed that we cleared about £1.5 million for the pair. Not sure where you got the frees info from.

I'll be disappointed if we don't have two players in before the Wednesday game.

If we mess about making bids that will never be accepted then not only are we risking missing out altogether but we'd be wasting time and reducing the impact any signings can make as the games tick by.

To be fair our recruitment has been pretty outstanding since Wilder has come in, very few poor signings. Do think we need to be more bullish in the JTW. Truth be told we’ll see what happens.

Sorry roots my mistake the live match on sky the other year ,the commentator said there contracts were up,I assume they were under 24?at the time.
Not many clubs out of the Prem can let contracts run out. Is your chairman a rich man ?

I doubt he has a huge amount of dosh as he coughs up a fair amount to keep us going. Our new ground and complex has to be built soon for him to recoup his losses.

For those who are interested the bid was believed to be £700k and it got Foxtrot Oscar from Ron.

That's a good price for a 25 year old who's not played above 1st division, with his contract running outq

£700,000 is a hell of a lot for him with 6 months left on his contract.

If we spend that or more on him in January then Wilder will probably have to use him a lot to justify it to the board.

Maybe we could loan them somebody to reduce the fee. Lavery would be good for them.

Given Leonard's contract status, I expected any offers to be lower than they were over summer.

I agree that £700k (if true and if not the overall total including add-ons) is a huge amount for a player with his playing record and must show that CW's wants him badly and is keen to get his transfer wrapped up ASAP.

I still have a sneaky feeling that he'l end up at Millwall although the probably won't be until the summer if Southend are rejecting such offers.

I think they're fucking mad to reject that to be honest. They aren't going up this season. They could strengthen significantly with that amount of money in at least 2/3 positions.

If Phil Brown ends up back at Hull, then Leonard is just the type of player that he will need to turn them around and Leonard would still be able to enjoy the sea air !!!

Personally I think we are fucking mad to offer 700k when he is out of contract at the end of the season. He definately is not a adirect replacement for Coutts IMO
