For those wondering, you can have as many loanees in the overall squad as you want, but can only name up to five of them in any given matchday squad.

So the good news is that if Souttar is injured for the season, which a knee injury would be, we can still loan in an additional player, meaning we effectively have 3 loanee spaces in the matchday squad for the JTW

I doubt there will be any clause allowing us to do that. You won't find many (any) examples of that in modern football contracts. Sometimes the only thing is the parent club retain the right to oversee/perform the recovery process, to protect their asset. So it wouldn't surprise me if he goes back to Leicester to do his recovery and we don't see him again, however we will still technically have him on loan and be paying the agreed fees

Getting the loans right is one of the main contributory factors in a successful promotion season, be it L2, L1 or Championship.

The difficulty in using them as a springboard to the PL is that you are allowed fewer loans when you get there. This can mean that at least three quality players are removed from your promotion squad as you step up to the higher league (all assuming that you don't also lose key contracted players, due to poor strategic squad management!). The first steps in spending the promotion cash bonanza is merely to catch back up to where you were. Make a mess of that and you start the PL season with a weaker starting eleven than the one that rode on the open top bus.

It's a Catch 22 that the PL and EFL need to take a look at. 2024's promoted clubs are in pole position to repeat what happened to 2023's and come straight back down.

Technically, we do, but hopefully the insurance company pay us. So it’s on us. If we have insurance, good, but the liability is on us.

We'd be liable for whatever fee we've agreed but I assume we'd probably agree for him to go back to get treatment at Leicester given they'll have better facilities and saves us treating him. If he's out for the season.

Yeah I get that, it just seems unlikely we'd be OK to leave one out if uninjured or indeed the player/parent club would be OK with it?
