Oreit muckers.

just wondered where Blades were planning on boozin in Rov-ram on Sat-di. After growin up in Raw-mish in Rov-ram I can offer some advice. Stay the fook away! Get the train in (presuming you're having a drink) or drive. Get there as late as possible and get the fook out of the shithole that is Rotherham town centre as quick as poss after the match.

However I am meeting a special guest on Sat-di, so I must brave mi sen n head art in Toy town. Olle n Pappa Luigi have gorra date wi Prince Albert.

It's 10 years since I went boozin in Rov-ram town centre, but I doubt much has changed since then. I can certainly recollect the pubs not to go in and will not be chancing that they have got any better. In the late 90's, when I first started boozing, there used to be some decent ale houses in the town centre. I remember supping decent ale in the Charters, Effingham Arms, Tut and Shive etc on a regular basis. Unfortunately these ale houses closed down in the land that time forgot and left shit, horrible boozers, serving crap ale. On the few occassions I went back to Rov-ram the Bluecoat (a Weatherspoons' pub - converted from a - rough as fuck - nighclub) was the only place serving decent ale, apart from a couple of old men's pubs on Wellgate.

In search of inspiration as to where to go on Sat-di I had a look in mi real guide. It just has the Bluecoat and the Bridge Inn. The latter is a new-ish entry (having changed hands recently) and it appears they are making a bit of an effort. They tend to have a few guest ales (and ciders) on. I haven't been in since it was Nellie Dean's (in the early naughties) but it looks a decent place. Only problem is it is not far from ground and with 12k expected I reckon it might be busy. Looking on Rotherham Camra's wesbite there are a few other options. There's the Corn Rhymber, which is a Weatherspoon's pub. There are a couple of pubs up on Wellgate (the old man pubs I talked about) which serve real ale too. They are on the other side of town to the ground (but still less than 20 mins walk) so might be a bit less busy.

Just wondered what people on here where doing? I think the best options are:
- 1) one of the Spoon's (or both - as they are close to each other)
- 2) the Bridge Inn
- 3) Bit of a crawl, starting in Wellgate (Mail Coach and Hare and Hounds), calling it at one (or both) of the Spoon's pubs and (possibly) even a last stop at the Bridge Inn. This basically moves in the direction of the ground, taking in all the best ale houses.

I am tending towards option 3 at the moment, but could be swayed. If anyone off here fancies a couple in one of the Weatherspoon's for example, then I would be happy to meet up.

Not really decided what were doing yet (I'd be astounded if it wasn't a bit tastier than it has been for the last decade).

We'll be at the lane in the morning, but depending when we're done, we may be driving.

Rotherham Blades on Twitter suggested they'd be in the Bluecoat.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, the Bridge is a good boozer, used to have a folk music night and good ales so it's a bit of a more relaxed crowd, at least on non-match days

Fookin ell, a got mi geography mixed up!? Bridge Inn is a bit of a distance from the ground. By that I only mean 10 mins or so, but it throws out it out of the crawl equation. it could mean that it is a bit quieter, as some of the town cente pubs are closer to the stadium. It's right by the train station though (possibly counter balancing the distance) which means that I will almost certainly have one in there (before if we get the train and/or after).

Looking at a few reviews the Bluecoat is the best ale pub. Hence I reckon we'll go there. Might pop up to Wellgate beforehand, depending on time.

what an interesting read

Hold on a minute. You and your Italian mate are having your bell ends pierced in Rotherham on Saturday?

I think you've got a bit of a glass back Ollesandro earlier this year you told me that Elsecar was dangerous for Blades, in as many words, My local the Market has just been taken over by a Blade who proudly wears the shirt in the pub. Elsecar is full of Blades. There's a CAMRA Beer Festival in the Milton Hall next to the Market this weekend. Bollox to Rovrum away. You could do the Festival and taxi into Rovrum. Be careful you don't tell 'em you're a Blades fan !! quiver quiver

Bluecoat is definitely the best boozer in Roth centre for ale, although I can't help but think Blades will be lucky to get in on Satdi. For those who don't know Rotherham centre, steer clear of the pubs around the bus station for a vast amount of reasons.

Oh, and Roth centre is much improved these days Olle you cheeky tart. And will be even better when a certain men's clothing shop finally opens in a month or so...

Edit: just to say, insofar as 'Spoons go Bluecoat aside, stay well clear of the Rhymer and Rhino. Hare and Hounds on Wellgate is okay though.

Rovrum is truly a dump. Out of all the local places in the area; I would put it just behind Worksop for shiteholes. Sorry for anyone from these areas. The actul town has potential with a nice centre with Church overlooking square and some parts are ok but the people. My gosh.

I work in Rovrum most of the week and stay in the office rather than walking through at lunch such is the sights.

As for pubs, the two Wetherspoons (not the Rhino; like a bad Bankers Draft) are about the best but Bluecoat is a bit of a hike from ground. The Bluecoat is one of few places I have visited post work and is alright. Just a bog standard Wetherspoon. Corn Law not quite as nice but just down road; closer to ground a bit. Nearby is the High House which is not great.

All the others Olly mentioned are pretty gruesome (maybe some real ale but Hare and Hounds and Mailcoach are pretty grim). A few on Westgate are even worse and will be rammed on match day. Not been in Bridge Inn since it changed from Nelly Denes. Avoid the County Borough. I walked past at midday other week and they had karaoke on and a man semi naked dancing on the pool table.

To be honest ground is not that far from Train/Bus Station. I would drink in Sheff. Get train late as possible. Takes 15 mins from Sheffield. Then if you go behind station turn right when you come out (not towards bus centre/town) through station car park and past the law courts; it is 5 mins away behind new RMBC building.

Come to the Beer Festival at the Milton Hall, 6 minutes walk from the railway station. There is a bus to Rotherham via Wentworth Village straight outside the Market pub less than 30 seconds walk from the Milton Hall. It's a no-brainer really. Think it's the no. 267 and takes about 20 minutes. Descending from the station you could have one in the Fitz (real ale) , the Crown (real ale) and a good gargle in the Market or just go straight to the CAMRA event.
If there's a cricket match on you could have a quick one in the Cricket Club. Elsecar is truly a paradise

The Fitz and Crown aren't real ale pubs as such but always have at least one real ale. Forgot to mention the Milton Arms which also has real ale. Milton Arms is just up from the Milton Hall, a 20 second walk. I kid you not.

Not that I have any particular affection for Rovrum, but you ought to see the sights we can see of our lunch hour around Devonshire Green/Fitzwilliam Street and on St George's Church grounds.

"Av yur got twenee pee?"

I didn't know Elsecar had a tourist board. Are you its only employee? ;)

Nice contribution. You just couldn't resist reading and posting though could you?! You'll be getting a Rotherham kiss if our paths ever cross.

Looks like I mistook Elsecar for being a full blown Dingle village, when it is actually a semi Dingle village. There's nowt glass back about being concerned some rabid Dingle will glass you cos you are a Unitedite. My mum and dad lived in Middlecliffe for a bit and there (and most of the villages around - Thurnscoe, Great Houghton, Hoyland, Darfield etc) I would have severe reservations about announcing I was a Blade. Forgive me for not realising Elsecar was actually a leaft suburbian paradise full of Sheffielders.

Not sure about the beer festival, as I often find them flat and lacking atmosphere. I generally prefer a good real ale pub to a real ale festival. Pubs have a better ambience, serve beer through a sparkler and are better for chatting, mingling, banter etc.

You reckon they'll have bouncers on the door on Sat-di and only be letting home fans in?

My what a depressing read. Unfortunately I think you are spot on. Like I said, it's a sorry state as there used to be some decent real ale places such as Tut and Shive, Effingham Arms and Charters Arms (the latter two are still running I think but are shadows of their former selves). I wouldn't drink in the New County, Angel or Rhino if you paid me. I slightly disagree about the Mailcoach and Hare and Hounds. Though they don't have the charm of some of the Sheffield pubs, they are friendly enough watering holes. I described them as old me pubs which I think is about right.

Aah, Rotherham. I worked there five years ago and can confirm it's an absolute shithole. The aforementioned Rhino. From eleven in the morning there is a Le Mans-style line up of mobility scooters parked outside while their ingrate owners get tanked up talking about their last job in t'pit. 30-odd years ago. (all Maggie's fault, you know.)

And the County Borough. Jesus. Makes The Jockey in Shameless look like The Ritz Bar & Grill.

For any Blades without tickets but who want a flavour of Rotherham without actually going there, start around King Street/market area and walk along The Wicker. It really is that bad.

So in summary then if you don't drink real ale and don't mind wiping your feet on the way out of a pub then anywhere in Rotherham is fine for a drink? In that case I'll be fine.

I'm going to the Wetherspoons on Woodseats for a breakfast and a couple of pints, then etting the 11.53 train to Rotherham and heading straight to the Bluecoat :)

Went to Rotherham v Chesterfield last year. Great game and a top day out (and I really liked New New York - a new stadium, but one with a bit of atmosphere unlike places like Reading or Cov). Did most of the pubs in the town centre, and the Bluecoat was indeed splendid - only slightly marred by there being 20-odd EDL knuckle draggers in there - one got smacked by HUGE bloke after the game for basically trying to windmill his way to the front of the bar.

Possibly an unpopular choice, but my fave was the Rhinoceros - essentially proper old gits Spoons (unlike the Corn Law Ryhmer, where your ten bob millionaires seemed to congregate). I mainly liked it beacuse they had five Chantry ales on - a local Rotherham brewery from which I've never had a bad pint.

We have an erm... appointment... at Bramall Lane on Saturday morning.

So my suggestion to his Lordship is that we drink/eat in town and jump on a train as late as possible.

The Chantry brewery have taken over the Prince of Wales Feathers on Westgate and have renamed it the New York Tavern

I spent many an afternoon in the Rhino when I was at 6th form college. Back then (late 90's) the Rhino was the only Spoon's in town and by far the cheapest ale houses. It was knocking good real ale out for less than a pound a pint. It really is one of those places that reminds you of the walking dead. From blokes with huge growths on their faces to grannies in their mobility scooters, it is a benefits whollers paradise. Am gerrin nostalgic .... Might have to pop in for one on Sat-di!?

The County Borough, or New County has to be the worst pub in Rov-ram. When I went to uni one of my mates used to wind me up, saying I was middle class but thought I was working class. I took him on a tour of Rotherham and he soon changed his mind. It culminated in a (... my only ever) trip to the County Borough. We were not in there long, even choosing to leave our pints before the glasses started flying. My mucker was completely traumatised after seeing the shithole that I grew up in and never once ribbed me about 'thinking' I was from a working class area again!?

This looks like a decent potential spot. However I would imagine Westgate will be busy on Satdi.

How about places to eat in Rovrum Centre if one wished to avoid the crush at the train station after the game?

Will it be worth us monitoring this site and twitter during your...erm.. appointment on Saturday morning? ;)

It may be advisable, yes.

I'm sure Foxy will be mentioning exactly what our erm... appointment is about before the erm... event.

See if you can book in at the Itallian Pizza Oven. Nice there.

I'll not be happy if I tune in only to find it's a blow by blow account of your dental check-up :)
