It is becoming very fashionable to respect everything these days when there’s a public display, which is a good thing
But seconds later the same fans showing their respects will then be shouting abuse to all and sundry, which suggests some of the respect being shown is more about self gratification and making that individual feel better about themselves.

Personally, I go to games to enjoy myself & get in a bubble. I don't want to be reminded of disease & death. I'm going to die. Maybe from a horrible disease. Maybe under a bus. I'm not interested when I'm at a game. I'll have a browse through The Death Gazette later in the week. Just like the No You're A Pig rivalry is becoming comical. This rush to claim more cancer & death than other clubs is a farce.

Goodison (RIP - said for effect) had it right. Have half an hour's silence before kick off at the first game of the season, get it over & done with.

Not sure I really want to see a public display of self gratification. There will be kids there.
 
Did you hear? The Office for National Statistics have recently published new life expectancy forecasts. Because we're all living longer, FIFA are contemplating a change to the laws of the game. Basically, we'll play 50 minutes each way. It's so those who have family members who die in their nineties can still launch social media campaigns for a minutes applause in the 96th minute. I'm not sure how true this is....

Planning mine for a cup game and extra time;).
 
Personally, if you want to applaud that's fine and if you don't that is also fine. We have some freedom's left for now at least.

I understand all of the above and agree that the 'Grief Industry' can get a bit over the top these days. Having said that we have asked the club to put something up for a mate who died last month.

Chris Ashton is a long standing Blade and died in Weston Park Hospital of pancreatic cancer, aged 55. He's been a season ticket holder for donkey's years and has followed United all over the place. He was a lovely bloke and very much loved by all who knew him.

The club put up a picture on the screen of my grandad along with an announcement when he sadly passed away in December. That was enough for us because it’s personal to us. We had a smile in sadness and cracked on.
 



To be honest the grief is something specific and personal to Rotherham United.

Their Chairman deserves to be held in high esteem for what he’s achieved with a smallish club
so anything to support their Chairman is a welcome idea.
However not sure why the Rotherham fans would prefer to show their support at an away match.

Surely all the Rotherham fans should be given the opportunity to show their public support towards their Chairman.
So this should be done at the next Rotherham home game.

If any Blades do decide to clap then where do you draw the line? This isn’t specifically football club related, its something personal to a Chairman of another club. You could easily find reasons to give a minutes applause at every match.
Also when a club legend dies in future the minutes applause is diluted if it’s happening for (subjectively speaking) less deserving causes. Have sympathy with the RU Chairman but I won’t be clapping as it’s not related to this club, football or the nation.

It’s just clapping. I don’t really feel the need to draw a line. It’s not like my hands have a ‘clap limit’ and I don’t want to use up my ‘clapping data’.

Clap if you want or don’t, it’s not obligatory.

Well done. A football club is nothing without the community of fans. A moment's remembrance, whether by silence or applause or favourite song, respects the person who has died, and re-affirms the shared love of United, football, and, ultimately, humanity. And if Rotherham fans choose to mark their respect for this lady and her bereaved husband at the Lane, I am happy to go along with that; equally, I have no problem with those who don't wish to join in. I have forgotten the details, but wasn't it at an away match that many Blades were impressed by the attitude of the home club when Shred's death had just been announced?
 
If this happens I think we need to show respect to Rotherham, either by clapping too or at least not trying to bait them during the minute, such as Toytown chants. There's always been a good rapport between the two clubs and I wouldn't like to see that change. If we're winning I can see us reacting more positively than if it's not going our way!
 
Can just imagine the reaction on here if some opposition fans were saying similar about us having applause for Mrs McCabe.

It's 1 solitary minute to recognise the nearest and dearest of the man that saved their club from the Booths, and built them a fantastic stadium.

I hope I live until 90 and get a round of applause in the 90th minute. However, I expect to live longer than that and the fate line on my palm suggests I will live to 101!

so I will switch to being a Wednesdayite when I turn 100 then I can look forward to getting a round of applause in the 101st minute away at Rotherham.

It is conceivable that 90 Blades will die this week so do we have to clap the whole f****** match.
