...with Victor Chandler. Can get 5/2 with Skybet although people might be missing that market as it's in a different place on oddschecker.

Try to take these things with a pinch of salt as it's easy/prudent for a bookmaker to shorten someone up once a few bets start coming in. 3s on is pretty short though!

Bit of a worry :(

1/10 Victor Chandler
1/6 Stan James
5/2 Skybet

Maybe the lad who does the manager markets at Skybet has gone to lunch?

thing is its also about what moneys been put on who. Id imagine that the total staked on any one of these managers is pretty minimal so if someone overheard something and stuck £100 on any candidate Id imagine they go to better than evens.

I wonder what odds you get on another two or three managers being "odds on" before we finally get our finger out and unveil one. Am I right in thinking Pagey is the fourth to be odds on (not just the favourite) after Wilder, Robinson and McCall?

Just goes to show that the bookies don't have the faintest idea. Obviously they're just trying to protect themselves.

That's the crux of it. Having someone available at a big price says a lot more than someone being short because the bookie is then taking a risk.

Having said that, the money to push someone down to 1/10 has to come from somewhere and looking at the way the prices have gone, there's been someone willing to back Page at evens.

1/10 was the price that Wilder was at Chandlers - it could be that that's the price they default to when they get a few bets in. Stan James might just follow them in case they know something.

You can't get more than £20 on at 5/2 with Sky.

Well we can't say whether it would be a good/bad move until he's actually managed a team.

If he does get it, let's actually give him a chance and get behind him!

Sorry, I can't agree.
Appointing a man who's only ever managed a 4th Division Youth team on the basis that he talked a good game in his interviews would very definitely be a BAD move.
It might pay off and it might not but the risk level is exceptionally high and taking risks at this time is the very last thing we need.
The crowd would be generally gutted and not totally behind him.
It would just be a terrible choice. Let's hope it's not going to happen.

I agree that it doesn't look great, but who could we appoint now that wouldn't be a risk?

From what I've read, the only positive reaction from the fans would come if we appointed Jackett and he's only got 1 promotion from the third tier on his CV.

Jackett is undoubtedly the best qualified candidate that we're being linked with.
He actually has two promotions as a manager (Swansea and Milwall) and three more promotions as a coach (Watford and QPR). Throw in two other play-off Final appearances, an FA Cup Semi Final and a Football League Trophy win and his CV starts to look much more impressive.

Having never been a first team or even a reserve team manager, Rob Page's credentials and experience are the worst of all those we're seriously linked with. Even Chris Morgan has a marginally more impressive CV.

If we can't get Jackett, I would turn to Davis, Coyle, Slade, Wilder, Tisdale all of whom have actually been a manager and achieved at least one promotion.

I agree 100%, I just don't think we should write Page off completely should we choose to offer him the job. I did specify in the third tier, I know he got Swansea promoted from League Two a number of years ago and that he's a very good manager.

I would be the same, I'd go for all of those first and Page would be a long way down a list that I made, but I wouldn't just write him off until I'd seen what he could do as a manager. Everyone has to start somewhere, and sadly we're now that low down the pyramid that we might have to be that starting point for some managers :(

If we can't attract and/or afford a good manager then I'd rather appoint somebody who might be good than somebody who is proven to be shit. Its a gamble but were down to our last chip.

When we have been a starting point for managers in the past, it has been for those who had a glittering playing record and were seen as "leaders" on the pitch - Mercer, Peters, Bruce, Spackman and Speed. With all due respect to Page, he is hardly in the same category.

He was certainly a leader on the pitch, just not as famous a name as those you quote. However, a leader is a leader, regardless of fame.

chris wilder was 1/10 with victor chandler at one point a few weeks ago. then mccall was 1/5. how did they turn out?

My sources tell me Robert Page is a strong contender for the Sheff Utd job. Thought to be between him and possibly one other....cont

Sounds like Chris Morgan is no longer in the running. Hear Page interviewed very well. Final decision expected in next 48hrs

If you want a true indication of price then use betfair. I don't know if they have a market but if they did' check the price there.

Bookies are quick to cut odds but slow to increase. This is why exchanges give better value for higher odds.

Not sure what to think about Page

Thought to be between Page and possibly one other. Possibly??? Do we have the Andy Goram situation here, Robert Page or his alter ego Robert Page. I do hope when they have 2 people to choose from, that they are not the same person.

Well many of us have said give someone younger/fresh a try so I would buy into it not being the worst thing we ever did. Its a bloody gamble mind you. How would we have known if Martinez and people like him were any good if someone didn't take a punt on them.

Gulp.

Nothing against Page getting the job. Deserves a chance to prove himself in management.

What worries me is that at least two (possibly three) have knocked us back. One is managing in Scotland and the other hasn't managed a club in about 3 years. That tells you a lot about what the next manager is going to have to work with. Frightening!

Just how far is this club going to fall?!
