Represented Teds at both footy and egg chasing - used to take the conversions - the standard rugger type can't kick a fecking ball - that's why they chase eggs.

With the Desso pitch it doesn't have any effect, just look at some of the other grounds that hold both football and rugby (Liberty Stadium been a prime example). No visible lines either if done properly.

If it gets extra revenue in and doesn't ruin the pitch (which it doesn't) then I don't know why it would bother people.

Dont forget that from its creation, Bramall Lane has hosted various sports.

Can you say with certainty it doesn't have ANY effect? You don't know how different Swansea's pitch would be if rugby wasn't played on it, it's hard to see just from TV footage anyway. I can say with certainty that it won't do it any good and if anything only make it worse. And if the revenue isn't substantial, which it wouldn't be, it wouldn't be worthwhile for us. Bramall Lane's history is irrelevant.

Didnt go to the lane 2 years ago then when eagles were there ?, if you did it was obviously a complete mess from november to march.Rugby churned up mud, unrooted grass and left large divets. it would be a bit better now we have a hybrid pitch but still, we dont need rugby ruining our pitch.

I would add that I played on a Desso at the end of the season before last. The groundsman told us it had 94 matches played on it that season alone. But for a slightly bare patch in the middle it could've been August-standard to anyone who was watching.

Agreed; it makes a bit of mockery of sponsors guests now being told that they can't walk on the pitch, when being shown round the ground prior to a match

So the pitch was a complete mess during the off season for rugby when no games were played? rugby is a summer sport so they play the majority when there is no football

Seem to remember playing a few of the Sheffield schools 79-81 ish.
The only match I played in for two years where we didn't lose (and by lose, I mean get pasted) was against one of the Sheffield Grammars, but that was at home on our sheep shit covered patch.
I retired at 14 shortly after becoming thoroughly fed up after a particularly dismal 84-0 defeat away at Hymers College,Hull one Saturday afternoon.
I can remember travelling back on the coach and hearing that Utd had drawn away at Stockport in the first round of the Cup, a match I could've gone to if not for playing bloody school rugby.

Unfortunately for Rugby league in this city your either a Blade or a Porker. As regard to second teams and other sports getting a foothold. The steelers and ice hockey won that battle in Sheffield years ago.

I also remember being at Ipswich the day England won the Rugby World Cup and singing en masse "you can stick your f****** chariot up your arse". The Blades support seemed completely indifferent to the win.

Don't really know anyone born or brought up in the city who takes more than a passing interest in either code other than when the RU World Cup is on.

Tends to just be red-trousered students watching it when it's on in the boozers which leading me to beat a swift retreat to another hostelry without a TV.

Rugby League is a good, honest northern sport and the players who play the sport put most footballers to shame, especially at the top end of the game. Footballers spend most of their time pretending they're injured, in comparison rugby players spend 80 minutes pretending they're not injured, says it all for me.

Bramall Lane has always hosted plenty of different sports (football, cricket, RL, boxing, cycling, running, tennis, basketball - it was opened as a cricket venue) so why fans are taking offence to the RL World Cup coming here is beyond me, especially as there is now no detrimental effect on the (desso) pitch. If it puts Bramall Lane in the spotlight (and by default leaves the sty in the shade) then it's all well and good in my book.

Iam sick of our ground being used for rugby.Glad the eagles arent coming back, It ruins the pitch. Unless the rlwc is played july-august which would be fine, the money we get for rugby games is minimal anyway.

My comment was sarcastic! I'm fully in favour of Bramall Lane being used for whatever appropriate reason, and I was happy that we gave the Eagles a place to play when they needed it. I've no issue at all with Rugby being played here.

If England hadn't won with that final Johnnie Wilkinson kick in 2003 (our triple assault season) I couldn't see another team worthy of being crowned Team of the Year in the BBC Sports Personality Award.

I'm all for any sort of event like this being held in the city. And even better if its BDTBL. I appreciate the crowds won't be 30,000 but extra income for the club shouldn't be sniffed at. For the city its also good as you may get 5,000 new visitors folk using the bars and spending money in Sheffield and one day some may even return.

I am slightly bias as I do play Union (grew up in Rotherham who did and I believe still do have great inter-school Rugby and Football fixtures in the winter) though must admit I'm not particularly clued up on league. I just think any event that might get kids or anyone interested in sport is a good thing. Without sounding like Gordan Brittas sport is what brings people together some of best times you have are on a sports field or in the bar afterwards. Yes, on the odd occasion I do venture to Twickenham, I cringe at the twats wearing salmon pink cords and blazers but we should be encouraging events like this whatever the sport. Even rugby league has got to be better than sitting on yer arse playing FIFA or watching breaking bad.

I played Union for De La Salle from 1961 to 1969 and with ko at 10 am had time to get down t'Lane. Then played for Trinity University in Leeds and also had a spell with Camberley; during a term long teaching practice assignment, who played in the South Eastern Counties League. They won their League Cup previous season.
