I don't need to ask who he was," Everywhere we go" Shred would be there for as long as I can remember. I've never spoken to him, just nodded a good few times; he'd always be talking to somebody in red and white, invariably with a smile on his face.

Not many earn the description "legend". Good on'yer Blade.

RIP.

I'm shocked, absolutely shocked and saddened by this news.

I have known Shred for the last 15-20 years of my life, i met him for the first time on his coaches when i was a young lad going to away games, and ended up striking a long standing and enduring friendship with him.

Whenever i bumped in to him, he would always ask how my little lad is, how LS26BLADE was getting on, ask me how life was on working the trains and show a genuine interest in what i was up to, and he was like this with everyone else he ever met. The one thing he always reminded me about was a pre-season trip to Cornwall in 2004 where i ended up staying in Looe, meeting a Cornish bird and taking her to watch the Blades in Tavistock and she unwittingly ended up on a Shred tour, and he always asked me if i was still in touch with her cos she was a nice lass......

I can't believe it as i had a pint with him before the Preston match in Fannies, i popped in as i was walking past, and there is always the proper old school Blades in there and I'm glad i went in there as i had the chance to have a pint with him. He looked the picture of health, he had just finished the coaches as he was a bit long in the tooth and getting a bit old for it, but i never guessed anything was wrong with him at all, and I'm stunned that he has passed away.

RIP Shred. A true gentleman.

Can still remember Shred well from the 70s before I left England. I think I can say the Blades have lost their best ever fan. I think it was Shred who first Started singing come on you red and white wizard'ssssssss. RIP

Never met him but just the fact that I know of him shows how much of a legend he is.

RIP Shred.

Not sure if this'll work

Had some fantastic away days with the legend. Blade through and through. Even if you didn't know him, I'm sure everyone will have seen him either at BDTBL or at every other ground in the country.
Gutted by this news, will be missed
RIP Shred

Shocking news. I didn't know him personally but probably the best known supporter. The last time I recall seeing him was a few seats away at the last playoff debacle at Wembley v Huddersfield.

If we get to a playoff final again this season, someone needs to be in the dressing beforehand telling them about his support for the club.

Please, please do it for Shred if that day comes and you pull a Red and White shirt on.

Shocked to hear this, everyone knew Shred even if it was only an oreyt mate or a nod of the head to say hello, where ever you went following the Blades you would always spot the big guy with the long hair. It feels like we have lost a little bit of Sheffield United, if you were lost and found yourself alone at an away game his was the friendly face that you always spotted in the crowd.
RIP big fella :(:(:(:(

Was stood behind him at an away match last season when the Blades fans started taking the piss out of the team -"We're not very good" or something like that. Shred was absolutely fuming and had a proper go at those singing "Have some fucking respect, they're our team, you're meant to be Blades". Top man.

RIP Shred

Sad sad news, some great memories of travelling to away games with him in the 80s and 90s , well drunken blurred memories....R.I.P Shread...will be truly missed x

Wherever in the country you went to follow the blades, if you were a little lost at some point or worried you were in the middle of a load of hostile home fans, you knew it was safe and there was plenty of other blades not too far away when you saw Shreds face above all others.

RIP Blades Legend

RIP Shred. All of my best away day memories are as a result of this guy. How he always finds the cheapest boozers to stop off at I'll never know. Knew he'd been ill, must have been to be not drinking on away trips last season! But still a terrible shock.

Away days won't be the same! Gutted I can't be there Saturday as I'm sure the blades will honour him in some way.

He wouldn't have cared much for it in the shoutbox then :-)

I shouldn't get all morose about somebody I never knew, but it is pretty shocking to think he was there Tuesday and now he's gone.

R.I.P Shred, wont seem the same without him next to us on the kop :(

Didn't know the name, but had an idea who it might be and the pictures Linz posted confirmed it.

Met him on the China Tour in 2005. We were part of the official touring party, but he travelled over independently. Remember turning up to the first match over there and seeing this rather odd sight of a chap with long hair in the fluorescent away shirt towering above the locals on the other side of the ground. RIP.

Stunned by this sad news. A true Blades legend, United games will not be the same without him. RIP Shred

Not being from Sheffield I obviously won't be as familiar with him as a lot of you are on here, but I do remember seeing him at plenty of away games.

Sad news, RIP fellow Blade

Met him on a few occasions, usually at obscure pre-season games like in Devon or Scotland, but always came over as a genuine nice bloke.
'if Carlsberg did Blades' you'd get Shred, the ultimate Blade!

RIP fella

I hope that the team wear black armbands in his honour tomorrow?

Sheffield United are deeply saddened to report the passing of well-known Blades fan David Spencer.

Staff, friends and colleagues, and undoubtedly fellow supporters at Bramall Lane are all shocked by the passing of 'Shred' to a higher league.

John Garrett, United's Supporters' Liaison Officer, comments: "We say 'Shred' because that is the name that all knew David by. What can any of us say, you will find no one fortunate to know him that will say a bad word about a figure regarded by all as an icon, but the man himself was the most unassuming person you would ever meet.

"Never a bad word to say of anyone, his utopia was all Blades being together - United truly as one. His away coaches are the stuff of Sheffield United folklore. How many fans were weaned at his side and looked after with an arm round them as a young 'un by a man respected by all? A massive influence on so many, a fact that makes this piece so hard to write, so hard to find the right words because all who came under that wing, all who stood or sat next to him will have their own stories, their own view and feelings - all will be feeling their own grief - such is the mark of the man. What a legacy. A complete one off, a decent and honest man who simply wanted all to be the same. All to be equal. They broke the mould, they really did."

The Club he dedicated everything to will listen to suggestions of tributes that the football family at Bramall Lane he cared for so much wish to make in any way it can, but this has to be led with the approval of his family first and foremost, and we ask all to understand and respect this.

The main flag on the John Street side of Bramall Lane flies at half-mast in memory of one of our own loved and respected by all. A proper Blade, a proper bloke.

Those wishing to make a suggestion or those simply wanting to pass their sympathies and love to the family and those closest to him are welcome to do so at [email protected]

RIP Shred

Never knew him personally but always remember him getting on the bus at Frechville when I was a kid. Me and my mate always used to call him 'Francis Rossi'.

RIP Shred
