Remember when Reg Brearley 1st bought us he was pretty ambitious for the club and spent quite a lot when we were in the 4th division.
He was ahead of his time because he wanted to turn Bramall Lane into a super stadium, where it was multi use all through the year.
A running track for athletics, shops and restaurants and much expanded. The Sheffield council refused then he lost some of his enthusiasm towards us,

I remember also going to Barry Nobel’s Roxy’s for the urgent SUFC fan meeting, it was full, over 2000 there.

I’m sure it was Reg Brearley taking the meeting regards his launch of the Red Ribbon scheme.
Basically a lottery ticket scheme where the proceeds/ profits were used to help buy players,…those were the days.

To be honest I thought Reg had already passed away, but sad news nonetheless.

He was good for us in his early days when he took over starting in Div 4, but I think the failure to get permission for the development lead to the loss in momentum, coupled with some problems in his other business ventures, and he tried to sell the club a few times, including to Sam(antha) Hashimi in 1990. He was also responsible for the sale, against Bassett's wishes, of Brian Deane to Leeds, which arguably cost the club it's Premier League status.

Blades Revival November1986 still going today

Yes, that’s what Sheffield council wanted
yes the council was full of pigs . If they had given permission for the plans just think how many millions the council would have saved having a stadium that could have accommodated the world student games with out putting the city in debt for mega years to come .

When I started supporting United in 1989 I was only 9 and my first knowledge of Reg was from the United documentary. In my time as a Blade he wasn't very popular if I'm honest, particularly at the end when there was a protest v Derby County I think it was at the lack of investment, the lack of John Street etc. BIFA was formed and it felt like the fans just wanted anyone to replace him which was short sighted in that McDonald wasn't exactly perfect but again did some good stuff.

Reg from my time seemed like he was trying his best and did some good stuff but ultimately probably similar to the Prince in that he didn't have the inclination or funds to keep us in the PL. Sold Deane behind Bassets back which in fairness to Reg I think was going to happen one way or another that summer but not ideal with Harry in the dark.

Sad news of his passing and I'll remember Reg for the great stuff he did such as appointing Harry and replacing the Kop. Thoughts and prayers with his family at this time.

Always had a lot of time for Reg.
Part of the Bassett story which took us from the third to the first division. And what a journey that was!
Think he lost a bit of interest when the Council stopped his futuristic development plans for the stadium.
I have a photo somewhere, taken at one of United’s open days,of when he let me sit in his Chair, in his office, and pretend to sign on for the Blades, with him looking over my shoulder.Nice bloke.
Thanks for the memories Reg, and rest in peace.

RIP Reg, very sorry to hear the news, commiserations to his family.

The last game of the season 1979-80 was a 4-0 defeat away at Grimsby Town, Reg Brearley was a director at Grimsby.
United fans sang walk on for over an hour, stood on barriers, stood on each others shoulders, and just gave up watching the match as all manner of bedlam went off in the away end. At the end of the game Chris Booth got Tony Kenworthy's shirt that he threw into the crowd, a mass scuffle ensued to try to get it off him.......No chance.

Reg Brearley said "These fans are amazing, this is the club I want to own"
The season after he got his chance as we slid into Division Four

I was there, one of my first games. Sang 'There's only one Happy Harry' for what seemed like hours. All threw our scarves on the pitch at the end.

When I was doing my A levels, I got a job stewarding at BDTBL. It would have been 1984 or 1985 I think.

We lost 0-3 at home to Middlesbrough and as I was tidying up at the end of the game, he was sat on his own in the South Stand looking ruefully at the empty ground. I spoke to him for a good 10 minutes about Utd, and the performance that day. He was a lovely man, and he cared passionately about Utd, and the defeat really hurt him. The conversation has always stuck with me, and is something I treasure.

He was a good Chairman and custodian, and he stepped in when we were in big trouble after the relegation to Division 4. We made big progress under his Chairmanship and we should all be grateful for what he did for the club.

RIP Chairman, once a blade always a blade.
