RIP John Docherty

Fond memories of a right winger who scored a few goals in the reserves as well as the first team. My Dad had leg problems and didn't like big crowds so from an early age my first view of SUFC was watching the reserves on the John Street Terrace waiting for the pavilion man to put up the latest score for the first team. Docherty was my first Blades favourite and I was gutted when he was replaced in the first team by a young upstart called Alan Woodward who went on to become my all time favourite player. RIP John.

I think Docherty was the replacement for Allchurch and then he was replaced himself by Woodward. My one memory of him was during one match he found himself on the edge of the penalty in front of the Kop, where I was standing. The opposition goalkeeper was stranded around the penalty spot. Docherty decided to lob the ball over the goalkeeper, but unfortunately he put too much on it and it went too high before landing on the crossbar. Meanwhile some defenders had raced back and were covering the goal. The ball bounced back into play from the crossbar, but for some reason, spun over towards the left wing rather than towards Docherty. Gil Reece calmly headed the ball in the goal above the defenders. Goal!

Me too. Went down in a van night before and to Yarmouth after. Lots of fun, game apart. Remember JD as a right winger, never permanent but always did a good job.

Although not playing many games he had a knack of putting penalties away.
Casually stroked the ball which would trundle just inside the post , he did it for both 1st team and reserves.Obviously he didn't take many with a short blades career ! Just is style was so laid back.
R.I.P

Was Cambridge's manager when they beat us 1-0 relegating us (needed a miracle in last match against Leicester) to the 3rd division for the first time in our history. I was there.
I went too thought we’d stay up after we beat Charlton at home

41 games for us , 9 goals between 1961 and 1966

Reserves 1963-64 Aug 24 H V Blackpool -Teams..webp
John Docherty's tenure at Bramall Lane coincided with my absence from Sheffield, so a player I know little of.
Regardless, John pulled on the shirt and stepped over the white line so respect and Rest in Peace, John Docherty

One of the names on the team sheet when I first started going to the lane. The wingers were usually either or him Len Allchurch and Barry Hartle in the days before Alan Woodward and Gil Reece became household names. RIP Blade ⚔️

Ronnie Simpson can also be added to that set of players.

The reserve team programme above - Blackpool's number 8 did quite well.
