RIP Gordon. His death has reminded of the only time I saw him play. I'm sure he came on as a sub in a testimonial at the Lane (probably late 70's or early 80's). Does anyone know whose testimonial that was ?

Aye, he weren't bad. Can't believe how relaxed he was as he set his position before the cross. RIP.

Banksy was in the opposition goal in the first ever match i attended at Bramall Lane, Blades v Stoke City 71/72 season. I was stood right behind the goal on the kop and remember him tipping a Woody piledriver over the bar. Blades lost 3-2.

Not Blades related but far too good a player for me to be a twat about it.

The car accident where he lost an eye really updet me as a kid. I knew what a good player he was and it coincided with England's failure to qualify in 74 and 78.

RIP.
I remember feeling the same way ISC.
It was probably one of the first 'I don't really know how to deal with this feeling' occasions in my young life.
RIP Mr Banks.

Genuinely world class player (one of about 10 we've had in my lifetime) and undisputed best goalkeeper in the world between the '66 and '70 World Cups.
RIP Gordon.

In answer to the query earlier in the thread, I expect (but don't know for sure) that both us and the pigs missed him because we had England international goalkeepers on the books as he was coming through.

I had the great privilege to meet Gordon. My good friend the author Don Mullan commissioned me to paint the cover for his biography of Gordon "Gordon Banks - A Hero Who Could Fly". I attended the book launch with Gordon and Don. Such a lovely, humble man, and as others have said, a true legend.

Went to an event where Gordon was the guest speaker about a year ago, I'd done some watching of old videos before going to refresh my memory of how good he was, his stories were great, he was obviously not in the best of health and unfortunately the PA wasn't brilliant but the man had an aurora about him, he's part of football history.

RIP Gordon

Bert right behind Banks, on the Leppings Lane.

Yep Springett at Swillsborough and the wonderhul Hodgy probably up there with Banksy saving pens in Heaven

He was my favourite England player in the early 1970s. I played in goal for Dronfield in the SUSC u12s six a side at Retford in June 1972. At my boarding school I was the keeper for every age level from the u12s to 1st team.

My first visit to Wembley was the 1972 League Cup final and because of, Gordon, I was rooting for Stoke. A week later I was at Stoke to see us draw them 2-2 and they paraded the Cup to the crowd before the match.

TC put one past him from the edge of the box, though. Great shot into the top corner. Also, he squeezed a shot past him at his near post - a very rare thing indeed where Banks was concerned - from a narrow angle a few minutes later but it was disallowed for Currie carrying the ball out of play.

Banks was an absolutely fantastic goalkeeper. I stood on the Leppings Lane end for a League Cup semi-final replay between Stoke and West Ham in the early seventies and the Stoke fans absolutely revered him. He was brilliant that night.

The save against Brazil stands out, of course. The move down the right, the cross from Jairzinho and in particular the bullet downward header from Pelé were all perfect which made the save even better. Some of the players on the pitch that day were footballing gods.
