I learned yesterday that Blade Andy Hyde passed away late on Friday night.
For those who didn't know him, Andy had the barber's shop on Totley Rise. He'd not been there that long but he'd had a barber's shop called "Minty's" in Dore for several years before that.
I think he'd been on the hairdressing scene for many years. He used to work for Taylor & Taylor on Surrey Street many years ago - and I think he may have also worked at Sweeny's at one time.
He was a bit of an eccentric character - he gave up houses and a mortgage a few years ago to go and live on a long boat down at Tinsley. But, as I understand it, his father bought the old florist shop at Totley Rise a couple of years ago and funded the refurb and Andy sold the long boat and went back to bricks and mortar, living above the shop.
He was a single bloke as far as I know (he may have been married previously - I know he had at least one child). He once told me he'd never want to get married because he couldn't find a woman that would understand him wanting to stay up all night playing on his X-Box. He was into his Star Wars and all that stuff and the shop had lots of Star Wars memorabilia on display. It also had a photograph of him in his Birkdale School Uniform. He was obviously proud of having gone to that school but openly admitted it was wasted on him. He also had another piece of memorabilia on display - a signed Blades shirt from last season. I think he was one of those supporters that didn't go to many games, but he was passionate about the Blades and always good for a conversation.
The lad had his dissenters I'm sure. He seemed to have made a lot of enemies in the past, for whatever reason. But all I know is he was absolutely fine with me and with the kids. A lot of the kids who I knew through junior football, from Dore, Totley, Bradway used to go there for haircuts. So a lot of local kids will know him - and miss him no doubt.
The new shop should have represented a new lease of life for him - and for a while I'm sure it did. Then about a year ago he started getting pain in his shoulder which was affecting his ability to cut hair. Towards the end of last year he went from a walk-in service to appointment only, because he was struggling to cope with the haircutting due to being in pain.
It was only 2 weeks ago that I looked up his Facebook page to see if he'd posted anything about reopening the shop following lockdown. I was shocked to see that he'd been diagnosed with terminal cancer and was never planning to open again.
He'd posted that he expected to live for about another 2 years maximum. 2 weeks later and he's dead.
Terrible shock.
RIP Andy
