I say credit to Holmes.

He's obviously happy at Charlton, probably settled in the area, has a nice house, nice partner etc.

Instead of automatically showing ambition and wanting a challenge he's realised why take a risk with a move. He obviously enjoys playing for Charlton, it's easier for him in league 1 and he now has more money. Wish more players would stay with their clubs instead of jumping ship every time a bigger club or bigger wage comes along.

Good luck to him.
Think he would have been possibly great for us for 1 maybe 2 years but that's it. He wasn't the future.
 
As a side note, Karl Robinson likes to take his squads to Dublin for some golf and a couple of games preseason.

My Mrs knows him well as she used to run the Royal Dublin. Her best mate runs the Island golf club and Charlton are currently there.

To cut a long story short....she was approached by Lee Bowyer, exchanged numbers and then politely let him down.

Charlton....second class.
 
Played the island five times and it has rained every time, wonderful course though.
Play that and county Louth and fit in another assuming we have not had too much of the blond with the black skirt.

A really good article I think and even their local press acknowledge that if this was a no-brainer deal then it is slightly strange that it took weeks to sign this so called no-brainer! I don't blame Robinson either from wanting to keep him at all costs, because a few more hundred grand won't buy them another Ricky Holmes, he is pivotal to their chances of success next season. As I said on another thread, I wouldn't mind Luke Berry, 24, with 22 goals from the Duffy role this season and Cambridge are willing to sell at around £250,000 - since that is the reported fee that was agreed with Hibs but the deal fell down due to alleged differences on the players wage demands. Would have thought we'd be fine on that.

That article sort of backs up the Star, who reckons we matched the asking price of £400k only for Robinson to then up the price

Surely not....united ducked it up and weren't backing the manager apparently.
Release clause?? Robinson demanding more money after the fee was met??

To be fair, Robinson has played a blinder really, and managed to hang onto his player. A lesson United could learn from should we be in a similar position in future.
There seems to be a bit of the Brian Clough in him with a comparison to his hatred of Leeds when at Derby. Just that he's incredibly envious and hates us instead.

Nah...Robinson hasn't played a blinder because it was never about the fee....it was about Holmes and seeing how much he could get. If the release clause was £400K then that was sat on the table in front of Charlton, why increase it if we didn't have to? Holmes will have had personal terms from United on the table in front of him as well as improved terms from Charlton. It was widely known that he took 2 weeks to make his mind up so for me he was just waiting to see if United would improve their personal terms, which we obviously didn't!
 

What damn black magic is this?

When a release clause is triggered, we know it's time so say goodbye. It's the law of the land, that player must be sold, nothing more we can do?
 
The sooner this thread slips away down and off the page the better.

Could be right there but as Wilder has said we want players who want to play for us and it's not just about money.
I reckon Wilder moved on a few weeks ago when he realised Holmes was playing us off against Charlton to get a better deal,
Holmes got what he wanted with bit of help from us, unwittingly of course.

The article from the star doesn't make sense!

Here's the key quote:

"Sources in London last night claimed that United’s first offer, believed to be in the region of £400,000, matched the figure they had been told would trigger the 30-year-old’s release before Karl Robinson’s side demanded an even higher fee"

As I would see it, if a club meets the asking price the manager of the selling club can't then say we want more can they - that's the whole point of a release clause from the players point of view! So either United never met the asking price, or as you say we did, and Holmes just never agreed terms because he wanted more money. In the meantime Robinson was probably saying to Holmes "Wait Ricky we'll sort out a better deal and we'll match what United are offering" or something similar. Then Holmes decided to stay with Charlton for his "no-brainer" deal as he put it!
 
I think the article in the Star refers to the figure Charlton wanted. If Holmes had this as a clause in his contract they would have been power-less.
