Wrong. He's worth as much as Charlton are willing to accept.
He is worth as much a buyer is willing to pay.

If Wilder thinks Holmes would be as important as he seems to, if we've been chasing him for 2/3 months and if we've missed out on alternative targets in the meantime then we're already committed to him and really ought to properly commit to signing him - without paying silly money.
I'd like to think what and how we bid is entirely down to Wilder but I'm not so sure it is.
Maybe being 'close to signing a new contract' with Charlton will force our hand and we'll finally offer something they might accept.
But if he's willing to sign another contract with Charlton this early, that indicates he's not that bothered about coming here. So should we be bothered about him?
I want him here because Wilder does, and because I think he's a reliable performer who's got a lot to offer for the next 2 seasons at least. I also think it would be bloody stupid if we were unwilling to offer him a 3 year contract. If he has 2 decent seasons in the Championship he will have at least maintained his value by the end of his 2nd year, despite being 32 by then.
A possible positive to not signing him could be David Brooks. It could lead to opportunities for him and we could end up with a younger, better player. The McFadzean saga last year is most comparable to this one (with Smarmy Karl involved again) and we came out of that one well with Ebanks-Landell arriving instead. Maybe similar could happen again. That said, it's not like we'd be able to keep Brooks a long time is it.
Close to signing a new contract with Charlton apparently. That means his value becomes even higher.
Maybe the club regret not paying a bit more. Our bids for him, Lenihan and Leonard have been nothing short of ridiculous to be fair. We make insulting bids, then when they get knocked back we up them very slightly. It's a dangerous game and it's backfired here.
Is Wilder as desperate to sign him as some on here are suggesting though? Or is it that Holmes is one of several names on our list?
There's no doubting that we're interested but I see nothing to suggest that Wilder is desperate to get the deal done. He did say a little while back that if it doesn't happen within a certain period then we'll move on. That suggests he has other options, something else he has alluded to in the past. If Wilder thought that signing Holmes was the absolute best we could do he'd pay what Charlton are asking.
Can you go into Morrisons, take the Jack Daniels priced at £18 and pay £10?
Wilder knows him very well, wanted him last summer and still wants him despite promotion. I think it's obvious he's his top target in that position. I think if he was just one of a number then we would've signed someone else by now because it's been obvious for a while that it's not going to be straightforward with Smarmy Karl and Charlton. Wilder might have been bluffing with the comments about a deadline for Holmes and Leonard.

We've signed 5 players. 5.
Aaaaaaaaand it's dead.
Offered Championship footy, would rather get older and have another year in the third. His prerogative, I suppose.
We move on.

Indeed. Although, Tufty, being able to multi-task, will have made contingency plans. Contrary to the rather blinkered views of many on here, things are not done in a rigid sequential order.
No brainer? That's why it took a couple of months to sign
Shock, you're a bellend. What a huge surprise. To nobody on earth.I suspect you are quite young. You need a little more understanding of life and the ways of the world. Unfortunately I have no vacancies for work experience at the moment.

Don`t footballers talk bollocks when they sign/ or extend their contracts.
If it was a `no brainer` why would he have pursude a move to the Lane all summer.
Only the fact we were miles apart on valuation, and a huge rise has kept him there.
I just knew he`d come out with that sort of rubbish.
Got to give Charlton some credit for keeping their star man, if Charlton had gone up, not us, and they came in for one of our players, what do you reckon the outcome would have been??
