If Wilder thinks Holmes would be as important as he seems to, if we've been chasing him for 2/3 months and if we've missed out on alternative targets in the meantime then we're already committed to him and really ought to properly commit to signing him - without paying silly money.

I'd like to think what and how we bid is entirely down to Wilder but I'm not so sure it is.

Maybe being 'close to signing a new contract' with Charlton will force our hand and we'll finally offer something they might accept.

But if he's willing to sign another contract with Charlton this early, that indicates he's not that bothered about coming here. So should we be bothered about him?

I want him here because Wilder does, and because I think he's a reliable performer who's got a lot to offer for the next 2 seasons at least. I also think it would be bloody stupid if we were unwilling to offer him a 3 year contract. If he has 2 decent seasons in the Championship he will have at least maintained his value by the end of his 2nd year, despite being 32 by then.

A possible positive to not signing him could be David Brooks. It could lead to opportunities for him and we could end up with a younger, better player. The McFadzean saga last year is most comparable to this one (with Smarmy Karl involved again) and we came out of that one well with Ebanks-Landell arriving instead. Maybe similar could happen again. That said, it's not like we'd be able to keep Brooks a long time is it.

Is Wilder as desperate to sign him as some on here are suggesting though? Or is it that Holmes is one of several names on our list?

There's no doubting that we're interested but I see nothing to suggest that Wilder is desperate to get the deal done. He did say a little while back that if it doesn't happen within a certain period then we'll move on. That suggests he has other options, something else he has alluded to in the past. If Wilder thought that signing Holmes was the absolute best we could do he'd pay what Charlton are asking.

Close to signing a new contract with Charlton apparently. That means his value becomes even higher.

Maybe the club regret not paying a bit more. Our bids for him, Lenihan and Leonard have been nothing short of ridiculous to be fair. We make insulting bids, then when they get knocked back we up them very slightly. It's a dangerous game and it's backfired here.

If wilder wanted him as much as people say he would have signed him last season. I said the other week that wilder announced the bids to unsettle the players as the bids would not get any higher as they have no value.

I hope we don't sign both and we move on. There are better players that will become available either transfer or loan so let's not unsettle our champions with too many more punts

Wilder knows him very well, wanted him last summer and still wants him despite promotion. I think it's obvious he's his top target in that position. I think if he was just one of a number then we would've signed someone else by now because it's been obvious for a while that it's not going to be straightforward with Smarmy Karl and Charlton. Wilder might have been bluffing with the comments about a deadline for Holmes and Leonard.

He said as much in his most recent RS interview. That can't get in the way of an agenda, though. Some things are sacrosanct.

Can you go into Morrisons, take the Jack Daniels priced at £18 and pay £10?

I suspect you are quite young. You need a little more understanding of life and the ways of the world. Unfortunately I have no vacancies for work experience at the moment.

Aaaaaaaaand it's dead.

Offered Championship footy, would rather get older and have another year in the third. His prerogative, I suppose.

We move on.

Indeed. Although, Tufty, being able to multi-task, will have made contingency plans. Contrary to the rather blinkered views of many on here, things are not done in a rigid sequential order.

I don't see how having an ability to multi task has anything to do with a contingency plans.

Quite glad about this to be fair, 30 yrs old I don't think he betters what we've already got. Would rather have Lennard out of the 2 we've been linked with all summer but again wouldn't be upset if we missed out of him either. I think the Stearman signing shows there are players with more Championship experience out there and they take a bit longer to get in for various reasons.

On to the next one. I trust Wilder's selection and valuation criteria.

Holmes has never played Championship football has he? Perhaps never will.

No brainer? That's why it took a couple of months to sign

Don`t footballers talk bollocks when they sign/ or extend their contracts.

If it was a `no brainer` why would he have pursude a move to the Lane all summer.
Only the fact we were miles apart on valuation, and a huge rise has kept him there.

I just knew he`d come out with that sort of rubbish.

Got to give Charlton some credit for keeping their star man, if Charlton had gone up, not us, and they came in for one of our players, what do you reckon the outcome would have been??

Thank fuck for that.....lets hope he drops CW a quick text message thanking him for securing his new 3 year contract and pay rise!

The bloke is a mercenary....he was only ever going to go with who was paying the most money for the longest period, if he was bothered about testing himself at a higher level he would have signed for us weeks ago.....this way he gets to remain top-dog....I said weeks ago I had a feeling if he did sign it could easily end up being a Leon Britton type situation..

I see this thread has continued on the assumption that Wilder was still interested in Holmes. I can't recall our manager saying if he still had an interest in the Charlton player, but once Charlton chose to increase their valuation of Holmes, Wilder showed the correct professionalism and took a few steps back as negotiations came to a halt, yet one or two rattle on about whether we're still chasing Holmes, as if they somehow share Wilder's list of players he's interested in.

It's closed now, and for my money I suspect Wilder has been considering other options for a few weeks. We're not exactly barren in this department, and we have new potential (in Brooks, and possibly Whiteman) knocking on the door, so as usual Wilder will be ahead of everyone when it comes to forward planning. I wish the worriers wouldn't knock themselves out over who, and when, we manage to sign players. As we've seen with two defensive recruits, sometimes there's work happening that only the managers of both clubs are aware of, something we should be happy about.

It's very simple.

We wouldn't give him more than 2/3 years, reasons being...

1. His age. In the next 2-3 years his physical abilities will recede, and therefore his impact in a side looking to progress upwards will wane. He might have been very effective for this comin season, then less so as the team progressed and club targets raised.

2. We have a better player waiting in the wings, about a years worth of men's football experience away from taking his spot in the team.

3. Charlton are offering a contract until the end of 2020 season...it will be his last contract in the salaries brackets considered good. After that he will be looking in the hundreds per week salary in lower leagues if he's lucky rather than the thousands. He will have no value within 2 years, so our transfer committee quite rightly have set their stall out and that's that.

As for Holmes he's happy, he stays where he is and it's comfortable...no moving home, a level he can cope with and enjoy his football. He will have got a nice little pay rise for doing nothing and gained a longer deal. He may well have just secured his future with the extra year or two salary he's got.

To be honest I'm not fussed, he's going to be in league one so it's not like he's gone to a division rival. We move in to other targets, or young Brooks gets his chance instead. Hopefully it will be the latter

We'd have done what we generally always do and the first sign of a bid sold him.
