Never a wing back.

Signing him would get us a winger and a number 10 in one player though. Which is why I think we're likely to go for him, or at least someone like him.
Which is what we need to be honest.
He's not the type of winger that would be my preferred choice but if we have to resort to 442 at times next year we do need more wide men.
I still rate Chapman, I'm just not sure how big this jump is going to be.

We need pace....Holmes didn't appear to have any

Agree and he won't get any quicker. Even though CW obviously rates him, I'm really not sure whether this rumour has any legs - his age, experience limited to L1 and below, family based in the south, contract situation at Charlton, resulting transfer fee and salary demands (CW was quoted when he chose Charlton over Utd last summer as his being offered a life changing deal) all go against him

Not sure whether he'd be available on loan or whether he'll feature in CP's plans next season but I'd love to see Utd go for Sullay Kaikai - quick, direct, weighs-in with goals, able to play wide or central - he ticks a lot of boxes.

That and his age, 30 soon, our first XI this season was exactly young so could do with bringing that average age down.

Why the obsession with age? I've seen you point to Barnsley's team, but unless you can show me some causation with that correlation then it means bugger all.

29/30 years old is pretty much peak for a football these days. If our average first team age is around that, then so be it. We're not talking players on their way down from the Premier League at 36 years old after all.

I don't mind a 30/31/32 year old who has shown ability at Championship level, but if we're signing players with no Championship experience then I'd prefer them to be younger.

Still amuses me that people tout "swaps" I can't remember the last time I was aware of one..

As for Holmes I can't help but feel Wilder has been having a dig at him all season with the comments about players coming here wanting too much money and then signing elsewhere for more money. They still seem to be mates but I think for the step up Wilder will be looking towards players who are younger and I also don't think he will be willing to pay a fee for anyone 30 or over it seems to be against his business plan

You hardly hear of clubs 'transfer listing' players nowadays as well, but our Chrissy is old school.

I'd like to see us sin him and it appears there is interest from us. He might be 29 and have an awful pony tail but he can play! He'd be considerably cheaper than Maddison or Otzhumer I would guess.

If some of the rumors are to be believed this would be possibly Carruthers going the other way, which would you rather have at the lane Carruthers or Holmes?

Elementary.

Has to be Holmes.

Scores goals. Goals win matches. Also provides a number of assists.

Nice to have both.

would be nice to have both, hopefully it will happen, we will have to wait and see how much truth is in the Caruthers wife cant settle rumours, hopefully nothing in it and we could see both thriving next year.

Holmes for now, Carruthers for the future. Would be happy with both.

Ben Whiteman...with a full Wilder/Knill pre season would be cheaper still....

I don't see Whiteman as doing what Holmes can. Holmes is a winger or attacking mid. Whiteman's more of a centre mid and learning his trade

Holmes but only because Holmes would be an improvement on Duffy in my view whereas Carruthers seems more of a centre mid, capable of also filling in for Duffy but not an out and out attacking mid. His goals record suggests he isn't a player who plays behind the front two, whereas Holmes seems on fire in that department. I don't want Carruthers to leave though, he'll give Fleck and Coutts a run for their money next season, as good as those two are too.

Agree with you on all Points, and agree if push came to shove I would prefer Holmes as well, but as you said would be great if both, very promising midfield building, I would hazard a guess that we would do rather well with a few more bought in and real competition for places.

My first choice would still be Maddison or possibly Otzhumer but Holmes also looks quality. Holmes has less sell on value than the first two but we're less likely to lose Holmes if he does well! There appears to be some scepticism daarn South to the accuracy of this mornings article from the Kent Live linking Holmes with us. It might be just a tactic on Holmes's part to get a bigger contract.

Wouldn't be overally happy to sign Holmes. Given his age and the fact that he has never played in the championship. And the fact that he's nearly 30 and has only had 2 good seasons isn't great, I guess you could call him a late bloomer, but I'd rather sign someone a bit younger if they have never played in championship before , however if we do sign him , atleast this would give us a free kick taker, not just a have-a-goer who puts it 5 foot wide

Graham Carey, is another player as just flagged up now and before on this forum. He's slightly younger, on a free and also takes a mean free kick! Only problem is he's less proven than Holmes.

And with Plymouth going up they will be wanting to keep hold of there best players to try and kick on. If we want a free kick taker then Holmes would probably be the cheapest , however we could possibly try getting dack , he's a lot younger and he should also be cheap given the fact he will probably want to leave. However a realistic proven championship free kick taker could be maybe Michael Jacobs at Wigan, obviously they've gone down so again should be cheap

For me Ricky Holmes was the best Number 10/Winger to come to BDTBL this season.

He scored one and could have had 3, made everything tick, very direct.

If we could get anyone I would choose him.

Could've had 3 but didn't. Ran about a lot but didn't do all that much. At his age I think we can do a lot better.

I understand Sheffield United have made an approach for Charlton Athletic forward Ricky Holmes. James Shields on Social Media

Seen the article. I hope he signs but no doubt this will be a slow burner, although it could have been happening for weeks now.
