Ricky Holmes announces retirement

We simply moved as a club too quickly for him. Wilder was chasing him for some time so he's obviously got something about him, but where others did, he simply wasn't able to up his game sufficiently to keep pace with the progress of the team.

No ill feelings from me, in his position I would probably have taken the wage too. Good luck for the future.

I never knew he'd played for Portsmouth...

Anyway, as Snake says, I think it was a case of bad timing here. He never really had a bad game for us and was perhaps the only shining light in the game where Wolves battered us at the Molineux.

I probably saw him play non league football for Chelmsford back in the day. Going from that level to league one and highly rated at the level is some journey.

Shame for him his injuries and our growth made his ending not the best but most of us on here would have loved a football career as good as his!

There's always one and here I am; I didn't like how he signed a new contract at Charlton when we were chasing him, interest should've gone then however that's more a slight on United's recruitment. Decent player and unlucky with injuries.

I see a few comments suggesting that we rose too fast for him. I disagree. He wasn’t good enough for the championship – he did ok at Wolves without really linking in with those that played with him, but otherwise looked well below what was expected for a player we signed at championship level. Then he got injured. Had we signed him at L1 level, gone up, and he failed to keep up (like Carruthers), fair enough. But that’s not what happened, and even if we still in the championship and he’d been injury-free, it’s highly unlikely he’d have featured much if at all.

We didn’t rise too fast for him – he simply failed to rise to the level he was signed for. It happens. And that’s fine – not every signing will be a success.

One on a long list of players brought in to replace Duffy, and didn't. Even the one they got this season to replace Duffy can't get in the team!!! To be fair to Freeman he's been unlucky not to be more of a starter, as he's always looked decent when he has started. Imo I think he's played better than Burge when given a chance.

Anyway, good luck to Holmes post football.

A shame really he got into football late and then got the back injury while he was playing part time working on a building site for extra cash.At least he was given a chance to make it in the big time.A pity for him and us it did not work out..Good luck mate for the future.

Never like to see players forced to retire through injury or as a result of.

We’ve probably paid his pension the last couple of years

Wish him all the best, he’s been around the best blades side of my lifetime

In fairness to him...he probably knew he’d got a niggling injury and he’d come into the game late, therefore he’s taken any opportunity to get as much money as he could.

Depends which way you look at it but I think in his situation we’d have all done the same. He won’t have earned a fraction of what some have got out of the game. He’s had an opportunity to set him and his family up and he’s gone with it.

Think he’s said before as well that his family are still down south. I think being up here has probably played a part in his decision.

It’s got to be so difficult to come to the pro game late and be able to sustain top performance at the highest level. Even without the injuries he’d have struggled to get in the team ahead of Duffy. Seemed like a decent player still and it’s sad that he’s had to call it. Ironically, if he hadn’t have been with us it might have been worth the op if he’d have been somewhere where’d he got more game time.

If I was him, I'd take medical advice obviously, but I'd seriously consider having the op, whether I was planning to carry on playing or not. If it's something mechanical that can be fixed then he's better off having that done now, than later in life. The older you get the more difficult it is to recover from such things.

I don't think he fitted in at United, I think that's got more to do with him not playing than anything else, certainly in the early days anyhow. He was a bit of an "individual" player and I recall Wilder calling some players out (not naming them) for being too much about themselves as individuals and not enough about "team". I suspect he was one of those.

It doesn't seem like he's ever really settled here and if his family have remained down south then, to me, that just doesn't work. It's difficult to sustain it for any length of time and it becomes even more difficult when children come along. Children need a daddy to be at home on a fairly regular basis at least. (In my view they also need a mummy to be at home, on a fairly regular basis as well, but I am rather old-fashioned about such things).

I don't know the guy but he'd obviously got some good skills. If he's made enough to be able to retire from the game, good for him, and I hope he gets his back sorted. If he does that, he might just end up carrying on playing for some team in the south at a lower level.

Can people stop referencing the game against Wolves or show me something good that he did? The team was abject that night. He just ran around a bit more than some of the others but I don’t remember him actually getting a tackle in or doing anything of note.

However, he was amazing in Wilder’s Northampton team. I thought he looked good against us for Charlton too.

I’m pleased for his story of working and coming in late from non league. I love those stories. I also agree that it’s not worth risking his health. Shaving bits off your discs is serious stuff.

It’s a funny one. Presumably his most lucrative time in the game has come with a team who doesn’t really know who he is. Is an insurance payout based on your last contract? If so he’s done ok out of us.

No grudges here, wish him well. He’d better get that kid in a blades kit though.
