Could be a very good move this.

Although, I'd hope his wages are low.
If he can realise his previous potential, would be a fantastic signing.

Most keepers get better with age, but Wright's career seems to be going the wrong way. Hope he makes me look daft for saying that...

Have I missed something here? At 32, for a goalkeeper that's consistently played at a high level, you shouldn't be needing to scrape around in desperation to land a 4 month deal as a likely reserve. Has he had some big injury/off-the-field incident? Seems odd for starters that he wasn't kept on at Ipswich.

There are plenty pf players scraping about for deals. Its the recession. Surpised you haven;t heard about it. Its been in all the papers...

:)

He was in the Euro 2000 England squad. Clubs have paid millions for him. And at 32 he should be at his peak.

I guess Speed was with him at Everton and thinks he can use the guy.

I'm just pissed off that I can't complain about this one. I mean thats what we're supposed to do when we sign a new player.

Hopefully this week there'll be a player that we were rumoured to be after in the mirror or on tribal football signing for Leeds or Huddersfield so I can complain

Recession? Bah - we left that in January! :)

I fear we may have just signed the goalkeeping equivalent of Lee Hendrie. Hopefully he won't be needed, and if he is hopefully he'll be alright...

I thought the only consistent thing he'd done between his stints at ipswich was warm the bench.

Without checking the dates I am pretty sure that Speed wouldn't have been at Everton when Wright was. I think Speed was at Everton between 1996 and 1999 whereas Wright was there around 2004ish (guess).

I'm normally quite positive but I don't understand this one. It must confirm that the Akslu lad must be pretty poor or not really ready for this level, I expect he will be on decent wages and I would expect he will barely play.

Does a keeper of Simonson's age and experience really need a good reserve to keep him motivated? I doubt it.

I just think if we're looking at making the squad stronger Gk is an area we could get away with leaving alone.

Not sure I agree with that. Might we have made the top 6 last season with Paddy instead of Bunn? It's not beyond the realms...

The only disappointing aspect of this is that it must mean Aksalu isn't the real deal. Two decent keepers is a must if we're at all serious about doing well.

Speed's interview states that Wright's arrival will allow Aksalu to get games out on loan. Which is fair enough really - provided another club does come in and does then play him. I remember Anneson going on loan to Rotherham and spending the time on the bench - waste of time. I wouldn't necessarily see Wright's arrival as signalling the end for Aksalu, which is presumably why it's a temporary contract.

Nowt wrong with a bit of competition between the sticks.

After all,we were in our pomp when these lads were vying for the jersey...

You don't need to let the quality of a signing/non-signing get in the way of a good moan, len's turned it into an art from over the years and his new apprentices will surely pick up the baton. For clarity:-

A signing is, by definition, rubbish, we get them because nobody else wants them.

A non-signing is, by definition, a footballing genius, we don't get them becasue we aren't ambitious enough.

So, moan away, you'll be in good company.

A good signing in my opinion. I don't believe for a second that he's on high wages which seems to be the suggestion here. I don't think Speed is that daft to offer big wages to a 2nd choice keeper. Plus Wright was not in a position to demand a high wage anyway - he didn't have offers flying at him left right and centre. I think he'll be considering himself lucky to be part of this club having been not part of a squad for the last 3 or 4 months.
Everyone's a winner here surely - Wright has proven himself to be a good keeper which makes me feel more confident in case of injury to Simmo.

Oooo, I'm clapping like a seal at a clappers convention :-)

Heard he was on trial a few days ago. Very good signing IMO and fantastic backup as he'll push Simmo for no.1. Rated him very highly in his early days at Ipswich and has always been a very good keeper.

He slipped off the radar a little when he ended up a no.2 at Arsenal and Everton but you dont lose the sort of talent he's got. Pleased with this one.

i'm totally unconvinced by this unless it is a deliberate attempt to get aksalu some games.. aksalu is an international keeper so he's no mug whatever country it is.. wright has a bigger medical file than me and that is saying something. (and if you knew me you would know that is some file).. like i said before. .we buy them 'pre' injured these days

He'll be nothing but back up. Simmo won that game for us Saturday, if wed have been playing a side with confidence we'd have got dicked.

Starts in the reserves against the pigs tonight. Plus, an Argie trialist from Estudiantes.

Not so sure Broomers, it seems the intention is to loan Aksalu out for 3 months to get him some actual competitive games, Wright is only a short term deal.

I've seen him training whilst I was on a course up at the academy with Simmo an the goalkeeper keeper and he doesn't look too bad of a keeper, so it does seem a sensible thing to do if they can get him out and he can get some experience in the English game then it can only aid his development

Blades have signed Richard Wright on a 4 month deal...

WTF.

why on earth are we wasting wages on this guy???

We are in desperate need for a creative midfielder, a winger and a striker and Speed brings in a fucking keeper. Unbelievable. We have Simmo (better than Wright) and this Estonian chap (Aksalu or whatever his name is). Why do we need Wright? Because Aksalu isn't good enough cover? The why sign him and waste wages on him??

For a club that is skint this is a bizare signing. Pure waste of money in my opinion. Now in our small, lacking in quality squad we ahve 3 goalkeepers. 2 of these will be high earners. I thought Birch had commercial nousse???!!

Birch has several types of nousse, he gets his supplies from a hairdresser with a speech impediment and uses it to make his hair stick up in that modish way that follicly challenged people can't emulate.

As far as 'keepers are concerned, Speed didn't sign Aksalu. He's going out on loan, so either Speed thinks he's not good enough yet, or maybe never will be. Either way, he'd rather have solid back up to Simmo. After all, it's the fact that Simmo made lots of saves that helped us to get three undeserved points on Saturday. OK, you think that's almost like cheating, because it helps get us higher up the league than we would be if we had Lee Baxter. Why would Wright be a high earner?

I reckon Speed knows what else he needs, and signing a back-up 'keeper doesn't change that, the 'keeper just happened to come along first.
